Abstract: The ram of a vertical milling machine is raised up from the machine base and then secured thereto in a raised position to accommodate a workpiece having a vertical dimension that is greater than the normal vertical clearance between the tool spindle on the ram and the work support table below the spindle. The method involves removing the bolts which mount the ram on the base, threading long guide screws into these bolt holes and supporting an inverted U-shaped bracket on nuts threaded on the guide screws such that the bracket is disposed in an elevated position above the ram. A lift screw is then extended downwardly through the bight portion of the bracket and is threaded into the conventional threaded eye bolt opening on the top side of the ram. Thereafter, a nut is threaded down on the lift screw against the top side of the bight section of the bracket and continued rotation of the nut causes the lift screw to be displaced upwardly to raise the ram as it is guided by the guide screws.

Abstract: In a multi-piece rim arrangement having a tapered base member and an associated tire bead seat band, the bead seat band is constructed to prevent tire inflation if the rim is improperly assembled. Included is a portable puller tool, adaptable to existing rim assemblies, that functions to pull the bead seat band against the lock ring of the multi-piece rim arrangement with sufficient force to insure proper positioning of the various rim members and establish air tight integrity with a mounted tire.

  • Patent number: 4034837
Abstract: A conveyor roller is disclosed which has flanges radially inwardly thereof at its ends. Stub shafts are secured to the flanges by bolts passing through mating flanges formed on the stub shafts. Threaded apertures are formed in the flanges of the stub shafts to receive bolts to bear against the flanges at the ends of the roller sleeve to function as screw jacks for removing the stub shafts. One end of the conveyor roller includes noncircular rotational restriction means to drive the conveyor roller.

  • Patent number: 4027374
Abstract: Cylindrical water tanks, such as used for water softeners, inherently corrode at the bottom and herein is taught that the tanks are repaired by removing the bottom dish with the use of a novel tool that moves around the tank and bears thereagainst with a substantially uniform force thereby readily following the tank's contour, by sandblasting the interior for cleaning, by installing a new bottom dish to the cylindrical body with the use of a novel tool that automatically stops further penetration of the dish into the tank when a predetermined overall height of the tank is obtained, by welding the bottom dish to the body, by coating the interior with a non-corrosive plastic with the use of a novel spray gun apparatus that radially sprays the liquid plastic onto the inner walls of the tank as the spray nozzle moves axially therein and then the spray nozzle is adjusted to cause the spray to form an upward diverging cone to coat the underside of the top cover, and finally by allowing the plastic to harden.

  • Patent number: 4027373
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing a flow control device mounted between two opposed flanges of a pipeline wherein the flanges are clamped together by a plurality of studs. The method comprises the steps of clamping a pair of axially expandable flange spreaders to hold the opposed flanges in axial aligned position. Next, all of the studs are removed or loosened to permit access to the flow control device. Stop means are appended to the flange spreaders at the inside basis of the flanges. Lastly, the flange spreaders are expanded to permit removal of the flow control device from the pipeline. Reversal of the procedure will permit reassembly of the pipeline. Each of the flange spreaders comprises a pair of interconnected members that are axially expandable or contractable, and initially are clamped in position to hold the opposing flanges in axial alignment.

  • Patent number: 3997961
Abstract: A portable press device particularly adapted for the removal of wrist pins from engine pistons which consists of a base member configured to be received in a vise and having a top surface contoured to receive a sleeve member having a surface dimensioned to mate with a piston, the sleeve and base having centrally disposed openings therethrough with means for aligning the openings. Web members extending upwardly from the base laterally of the sleeve support a threaded ram member in position above a piston received on the sleeve, the threaded ram member being rotatable to urge a press head into contact with the wrist pin of the piston to force the same downwardly out of the piston through the aligned openings in the sleeve in the base.

  • Patent number: 3978575
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing a small metal filter from a liquid chromatographic column, wherein a retaining member is clamped around the tube. A first centering device is releasably centered on the retaining member in alignment with the filter, whereupon a drill is slidably guided through the centering device for forming a hole of selected depth in the filter. The first centering device is removed and a second centering device is supported on the retainer, which second centering device has a threaded opening therethrough aligned with the filter. An extractor is threaded into the opening so that the end of the extractor is disposed directly adjacent the filter. A tapping unit having an elongated thread-forming tap is slidably inserted through an opening formed in the extractor, which opening is aligned with the hole formed in the filter. The tapping unit is threaded inwardly so that the tap threadably engages the filter and until a handle on the tapping unit abuts the extractor.

  • Patent number: 3973315
Abstract: A tool for use in demolition of frame structures to preserve the lumber for reuse. A frame is secured to a timber, to which a board to be removed is nailed, by quick acting means including an overcenter connection. A pressure foot projecting from the frame bears against the back of the board to be removed. By a screw-acting mechanism in the frame the board is forced away from the timber over its entire width without splitting, pulling the nails as it does so.
