Patent number: 8869511Abstract: For reducing the NOx-emission of a large sized two stroke diesel engine having at least one combustion room (3), a reciprocating piston (4) and an exhaust opening (12) controlled by an exhaust valve (13) at each work cyclus a small volume of burnt gas is retained in the combustion room (3) and so added to the fresh air for the next combustion. For achieving this retention of burnt gas the underside of the valve disc (15) off the exhaust valve (13) is provided with a shallow concave face (17) building a basin-like collection room, whose depth is within a range of 2-10% of the outer diameter of the valve disc (15).Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2009Date of Patent: October 28, 2014Assignee: Man Diesel & Turbo, Filial AF Man Diesel & Turbo SE, TysklandInventor: Mads Lytje Christensen

Publication number: 20130160735Abstract: Throttle body assemblies having improved throttle position sensing assemblies and a method of integrating a throttle position sensor assembly with a throttle body assembly are described. The method comprises the steps of: i) press-fitting a sensor element onto a shaft of a throttle plate of a throttle body assembly; ii) engaging one or more inwardly extending members of the sensor element with one or more recessed portions formed on the shaft of the throttle plate; and iii) disposing an inductive rotary position sensor proximate the sensor element, wherein the press-fit engagement and one or more inwardly extending members limit axial and rotational movement of the sensor element with respect to the throttle plate, and wherein the inductive rotary position sensor detects a relative position of the sensor element for the purpose of ascertaining a position of the throttle plate.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2011Publication date: June 27, 2013Applicant: CONTINENTAL AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEMS US, INC.Inventors: Nathan Cowan, John Norman Stockbridge

Patent number: 8291927Abstract: A process for remanufacturing valve bodies such as fuel injector valve bodies includes receiving a salvaged valve body having a first segment, a second segment and a middle segment which includes a valve seat and a guide bore for a valve therein. The process further includes removing material of the valve body where the valve seat and the guide bore are disposed, and positioning an insert within the valve body in place of the removed material. A new valve seat and a new guide bore are then machined in the insert, including locating for machining the new valve seat and new guide bore on a timing face of the valve body.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2008Date of Patent: October 23, 2012Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Kirk Johnson, Gary Harris, Alberto F. Patent number: 8117750Abstract: An apparatus and method for repairing an automatic transmission. Access is obtained to the valve body and a special shaped Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) regulator apply valve clip is inserted against a TCC regulator apply valve to hold a TCC regulator apply valve in a fully open position. The clip is dished to avoid wear when engaging the TCC regulator apply valve and has an asymmetric top portion which cooperates with the shape of the valve body chamber the TCC regulator apply valve clip is inserted into, to ensure proper placement.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2009Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Inventor: Steven W. Patent number: 7712217Abstract: An improved system and method for disassembling the valve body assembly of a motor vehicle transmission. Air automatically ejects the internal components of a valve body assembly sub-assembly, thereby eliminating the need for an operator to manually “beat” the sub-assembly to remove said internal components. The process of separating the upper and lower sub-assembly, and of pre-washing the sub-assembly, remain the same as in the prior art. As before, the operator manually removes the valve retainers and plugs in each sub-assembly. The operator then loads either sub-assembly onto tooling specifically designed for that sub-assembly (either upper or lower). Once started, the tooling begins an automated, pre-programmed sequence of (1) clamping the sub-assembly, (2) injecting air into specific valve ports to eject internal components causing them to be automatically ejected into parts bins specified for each valve port, and (3) releasing the sub-assembly that no longer contains any internal parts.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2005Date of Patent: May 11, 2010Assignee: ATC Drivetrain, Inc.Inventors: James M. Publication number: 20090113707Abstract: A method of refurbishing a fuel injector body valve seat. The method includes removing a poppet valve from the valve bore guide, machining the bore and valve seat to remove cavitation, machining to create an undercut a the stress riser, nitriding the valve bore guide and radiusing fuel passage to a sufficient depth to restore hardness thereto.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 7, 2007Publication date: May 7, 2009Applicant: Detroit Diesel CorporationInventors: Roman F. Patent number: 7334329Abstract: In a method for pretreating a piezoelectric ceramic (1) and a method for adjusting an injection valve (7), the piezoelectric ceramic (1) is exposed to environmental conditions, leading to a reduction of polarization and also a reduction of the length of the ceramic (1). The obtained length exhibits a greater long-term stability due to said adjusting phase. Consequently, the injection valve (7) can be re-adjusted before use. As a result, renewed adjustment thereof is required only after a long period in service.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2004Date of Patent: February 26, 2008Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventors: Matthias Goller, Stefan Kohn, Wolfgang Reisinger, Andreas Voigt, Claus Zumstrull

Patent number: 6564457Abstract: Immediately after a laser-cladding is performed, a control surface is formed by machining the clad metal while an extra metal is left. An intermediate inspection is performed about presence/absence of any defect in the clad metal using the control surface. When a defect is detected, the clad metal is removed, and a laser-cladding is performed again. Since an extra metal where an amount of clad metal required can be secure exists, re-cladding can be made possible.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2001Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.Inventor: Koichi Kanai

Patent number: 6473965Abstract: A hand tool that greatly expedites the installation of the valve locks that secure a valve spring retainer to the free end of a valve stem. The valve locks include an inwardly extending ridge that engages a circumferential groove that extends around an end portion of the valve stem. The valve lock is retained in this position by a tapered central bore of the valve spring retainer that produces an inward clamping force on the valve lock. The tool includes a plunger having a diameter equal to the diameter of the valve stem. The user positions the valve locks on the protruding cylindrical surface of the plunger, where they are held by magnetic attraction. The user pushes the end of the tool against the valve spring retainer, thereby compressing the valve spring so that the valve stem pushes the plunger into a close-fitting loader end cap until the valve locks are transferred to the valve stem and into engagement with the circumferential groove.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2000Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Inventors: Andrew L. Levy, Harry A. Wouters

Patent number: 6405419Abstract: An arrangement for exercising (or burnishing) the intake and exhaust valves in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine employs a plurality of out-of-phase eccentric cams coupled to a source of rotatory motion. The eccentric cams engage with respective linear drive arrangements that are urged into out-of-phase reciprocation with respect to each other. The linear drives urge the valves into repeated open and closed states where, in combination with valve rotators, burnishing of the sealing portion of the valves with the valves seats to improve the seal therebetween is effected. The use of eccentric cams to effect linear reciprocating motion achieves control over both directions of movement of the linear drive arrangements. The cylinder head is maintained in fixed relation to the linear drive arrangements by a hydraulic, pneumatic, or other form of ram, the ram also creating a test chamber.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1999Date of Patent: June 18, 2002Assignee: Veri-Tek Inc.Inventors: James C.
