  • Patent number: 6135512
Abstract: An automatic door latch is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the latch includes a dead bolt which is automatically moved from a partially retracted or trigger position to a fully extended locking position when a door in which the lock is mounted is closed. When a key is used to unlock the dead bolt from outside of the door, or a finger turn or key is used to unlock the dead bolt from inside of the door, the dead bolt is automatically reset to the trigger position. In a preferred embodiment, the dead bolt lock includes a multi-position switch mounted in the lock housing which engages a contact member mounted on the dead bolt. Retraction of the dead bolt into the housing causes the multi-position switch to engage the contact member and to secure the dead bolt in the trigger position. • Patent number: 5009456
Abstract: A door lock apparatus includes a latch bolt which can be displaced from an operable position by actuating a door handle driver against the action of a biasing spring. A displaceable catch is provided for retaining the latch bolt in a retracted position. The catch is biased by a second spring into its catch position from which it can be displaced by an electromagnetic actuator, which in turn is connected to a wireless signal receiver. An alarm detector, remotely placed from the lock apparatus and connected to a wireless signal transmitter, is adapted to be activated when the detector detects a state of alarm, sending a signal which is detectable by the receiver at the lock apparatus for displacing the catch out of its catch position.

  • Patent number: 4974884
Abstract: A selectively self-locking deadbolt latch for incorporation into doors or the like. The latch can be preliminarily "armed" such that as the door closes the bolt will extend into the opening of the door strike. The latch mechanism includes a cam lever having a shoulder which loads against the bolt extension. A compression spring within the bolt urges the bolt towards the locked position once the cam lever is released from the bolt extension by closing the door. The temporary retraction of the bolt as it engages the door strike releases the bolt and cam lever. A beam spring acting on the cam lever urges the cam lever forward towards the locked position. The bolt is initially armed by turning the inner turn lever slightly or by depressing the end of the bolt which includes chamfered edges to allow the bolt to move past the door strike for release.

  • Patent number: 4946207
Abstract: A lock assembly (10) for mounting on a door includes a dead-locking element (31), movement of which is controlled by an electrically operated device (35) for mounting on the door frame and magnetically coupled to a linkage system (32,33) whereby the dead-locking element (31) is moved. The linkage system carries a permanent magnet (34) which interacts with the core (37) of the solenoid when the door is in its closed position, and when the solenoid is energised it repels the permanent magnet (34) thereby operating the linkage system to move the dead-locking element (31) away from its operative position, thereby allowing a locking member (12) to be withdrawn.

  • Patent number: 4884832
Abstract: A push door opening mechanism for use where protection from fire is sought. In operation the push handle causes a spring biased operating lever to rotate within the door opener. The operating lever pulls a bolt which allows the door to open. When the lever is in the return position, a cavity in the operating lever is positioned adjacent to a locking pin. That pin is held in the base plate and is longer than the depth of the cavity in the operating lever. The locking pin is also mechanically biased to move into the cavity. Once positioned in the cavity, the rotation of the operating lever is jammed because the locking pin is partially in the operating lever and partially held rigid in the base plate. However, during normal operation, the locking pin is retained out of the cavity by a low melting point fusible link pin. During a fire the base plate becomes hot, causing the link pin to melt which frees the locking pin.

  • Patent number: 4711478
Abstract: An extra-long deadlocking door latch or longlatch is arranged to fit and operate within the normal latch bolt openings provided in a standard pre-cut residential or commercial door, in the presence of two transverse bolts which pass through the transverse hole in the door to hold inside the outside door knob assemblies securely against the door so that an intruder cannot pry off the outside assembly and thus gain entry. The longlatch is arranged to protrude at least one inch out from the door and into a latch holder in a door frame. Two springs are located above the transverse bolts and extend into the door beyond both transverse bolts. The two springs, or just one of the springs, can move the longlatch one inch or more from the fully withdrawn position to the fully extended position. The longlatch is brought to the fully extended position in precisely the same way as is done with a conventional deadlocking latch, i.e.

Abstract: A door set has its door knob engageable with a bolt pin through an eye which is formed in one piece with a screw threaded into a shank of the bolt pin to enable axial adjustment of the effective length of the bolt. The relative rotation of the shank and of the screw can be effected from within or even by rotation of the bolt, for which purpose flats can be provided on the bolt and on a sleeve in which the bolt is guided. The threaded portion of the screw can be provided on ribs which can pass axially along grooves in the internal thread on the shank of the bolt.

  • Patent number: 4664433
Abstract: The door latch construction is of the usual type wherein a bolt is reciprocal in a casing between extended and projecting positions with latch operating means forwardly operably connected to the bolt for causing such motion. In such latch construction, the longitudinal distance between the forward extremity of the casing and the operator axis constitutes backset. According to the present invention, the casing and bolt are each comprised of relatively longitudinally movable forward and rearward parts with a substantially helical slot on one of the parts and engaged by a projection on the other of the parts in each case. The slot and projection of each provides helical longitudinal movement for each of the determined same amount between a forward backset and a rearward backset, with interconnection means between certain of the bolt parts and certain of the casing parts for requiring substantially the same helical longitudinal movement of one upon such movement of the other.

This bolt is held optionally in the half-projecting position between the wholly projecting position and the door-opening position by handling operating units. The bolt in turn puts a controlling means in motion, whereby it is possible to make an electric circuit operate automatically ON or OFF, which electric circuit is arranged to interpose in itself electric appliances, for example, such as lighting apparatuses being disposed indoors or outdoors, therefore giving practical effect to the simplification of operating the lighting on-and-off and to the power saving, and further contributing to the safety problem through preventing overheating and leakage caused by the possible neglect of not turning lighting off.

  • Patent number: RE36209
Abstract: A locking apparatus, particularly desirable for modifying a "push/pull" latch apparatus for a hospital door, by which it may be released from a locked condition by manual effort applied from either side of the door, thus giving an unlocking effect to a door even though its locking has been caused by a manual locking effort applied by the person on the other side of the door. The apparatus has a particularly beneficial use in a large commercial installation such as a hospital, and provides that the lock-releasability may be achieved by a manual effort applied wholly on the outside of the door, as well as the person on the inside of the door being able to either lock or unlock the door; and, although the door may be locked or unlocked from either side, the unlocking component manually operable to lock or unlock the door from the outside is provided to be of such an inconspicuous nature that it would be realistically considered to not be a component with a door-unlocking effect.
