  • Patent number: 5238276
Abstract: A handle assembly, comprising a release handle mounted within a recess of the handle housing, is adapted for installation in a vehicle door panel aperture from the exterior thereof. The housing is formed with a terminal flange provided with an upper omitted segment extending longitudinally between a pair of upright handle support brackets. An elongated retaining rib is formed between the brackets having an outboard face offset a predetermined dimension inboard from the plane of the terminal flange backside. The housing is mounted in the panel aperture in a rocked-in manner with its terminal flange overlying the aperture recessed flanged border while the retaining rib face locates to the inboard surface of the flanged border. The housing central body has an inboard projecting stem adapted to support a clip whereby the clip, when fixed to the stem by a fastener, locks the handle assembly in the panel aperture.

  • Patent number: 5183302
Abstract: A handle housing intended for attachment on a vehicle door panel is of injection molded plastic construction and has a base adapted to engage against the surface of the door panel. The housing carries at least one anchor leg, and preferably several, which project from the base and extend through registering apertures provided in the panel. Each of these anchor legs has a foot at the end thereof which is adapted to engage and underlie the underside of the panel when the housing is slid longitudinally along the surface so that the foot will engage with the underside of the housing and thereby prevent the housing from being pulled away from the panel. The housing also has a plurality of locking legs projecting from the base and extending through registering openings in the panel.

  • Patent number: 5133581
Abstract: An electromagnetic lock assembly has longitudinally extending interlocking protrusions and recesses in the magnet and magnet housing surfaces. This permits longitudinal movement of the magnet within the housing, but prevents lifting of the magnet out of the housing. End caps and an electronic circuitry cover clamp the magnet longitudinally within the housing and provide the mounting bolt brackets. An armature, providing for distribution of separating forces, reduces bending tendencies in the armature contact plate and thereby increases the effective separation load bearing capability of the lock assembly.

Abstract: The apparatus for mounting the outer door handle assembly to the automotive door according to the invention comprises: an outer handle body consisting of an engagement projection, an engagement surface, and a flange; and a mounting fitting consisting of an engagement portion for engagement with the engagement projection, a rotatable engagement claw for engagement with the engagement surface, and a projection edge. The outer handle body is inserted from outside into the mounting opening in the outer plate of the door; the engagement portion of the mounting fitting is engaged from inside the door with the engagement projection; and the engagement claw is rotated to engage with the engagement surface. As a result the outer plate of the door is tightly clamped by the flange and the projection edge, thus permitting the outer door handle assembly to be securely mounted to the door without the use of bolts and nuts.

  • Patent number: 4892342
Abstract: A vehicle door outside handle housing is mounted in a door panel rectangular opening such that the housing peripheral lip flange portion is in flush contact with the panel outboard surface with the housing main portion inserted in the panel opening. A central hub extends inboard from the housing main portion with its principal axis aligned on the geometric center of the opening. The hub is formed with an external thread for engagement by the internally threaded lead-in collar portion of a piloted nut. A bent spring rod retainer in its unrestrained state is assembled between the inboard surface of the panel and the undersurface of the nut driving head. The spring rod retainer includes a looped central eye formation defining a semi-circular eyelet that is self-aligned on the hub axis and telescopically receives the nut collar. Upon threaded engagement the piloted nut captures the retainer and the housing in the panel opening.

  • Patent number: 4883296
Abstract: A vehicle door handle assembly comprises a handle pivotally connected to a base plate. The handle assembly is connected to a door sub-assembly by screws. The handle comprises a button which when depressed enables a restraint to be drawn into an operative position by a screw extending through the shut face of the door. When released, the button is locked in position by the restraint and prevents access to the screw. This screw, when removed permits the handle and plate to be pivoted away from one another to reveal another screw which may then be removed to remove the handle assembly from the door. The handle assembly can therefore be removed from the door from externally of the door but only when the door is open thus facilitating painting and maintenance.

  • Patent number: 4880262
Abstract: A latch is disclosed which is both rugged and economical. The latch includes a flanged housing which acts as a bushing for a journal portion of an operator. The operator includes a narrowed and recessed handle portion. At the inner end of the operator, a generally planar striker is placed to the interior of a door to interact with the frame. The striker rotates with respect to the housing and is limited in rotation by a stop which interacts with the housing. The striker is fixed to the operator by connector means to prevent relative movement between them. The housing is secured to the door by securement means which draws the flange of the housing against the exterior of the door.

Abstract: A doorjamb strike plate reinforcing device to provide increased holding strength and, therefore, security to bolted doors and similar closures. A reinforcing device is provided having a rigid body configured for cooperating with a strike plate to laterally restrain a bolt received by the strike plate. Integral to the body of the device is fastening means for fastening a fastener thereto to secure the device to the doorjamb. The fastening means is configured for receiving a fastener from a direction above the device and for guiding the passage of the fastener into the doorjamb in a direction which is at an angle of less than 25 degrees to the plane defined by the strike plate and, preferably not greater than 10 degrees so as to provide for the anchoring of the device and strike plate in a direction which is substantially parallel to the line of force which would be exerted thereon during an attempt to forcefully open a bolted door.

Presented is a door assembly incorporating a system of components cooperating in a door assembly to increase resistance to forced entry through such door assembly. Forced entry is generally defined as being an unauthorized entry accomplished by the use of force upon the physical components of the premises, generally doors and windows, and usually exterior entry doors. Such forced entry usually takes the form of battering on the door adjacent to the door lock assembly, or adjacent to the center hinge of the door, usually applied by one or more solid kicks delivered to the door.
