Abstract: An improved utility knife with an ergonomically shaped handle having a cavity and a working blade holder slidably disposed within the cavity is described. A bottom release lever and a top drive lever are pivotally mounted to the handle and movable with respect to the handle for releasing and moving the working blade holder, respectively. The knife includes an extra blade holder slidably mounted to the handle and movable with respect to the handle within the cavity. The extra blade holder includes a front support end for engagement with a working blade, whereby slidable displacement of the extra blade holder disengages the support end from the working blade to allow removal and replacement of the working blade from the utility knife.

Abstract: An improved cutter knife and particularly to a cutter knife allowing positive and inverse gripping when in use consists of an upper shell and a lower shell that are coupled to form a body. The body has one end forming a handgrip conforming to ergonomics to allow positive and inverse gripping. The handgrip has a blade anchor section and a blade fast change section on one end to allow positive or inverse gripping and fast replacement of the blade. The positive gripping may be used for ordinary cutting such as for paper or cloths. The inverse gripping may be used for heavy duty cutting with a greater force such as for cardboard or wooden laminates. Thus it provide dual functions and may be used conveniently to overcome the limitation of conventional cutter knives that allow only positive gripping.

Abstract: A utility knife includes a handle assembly comprising first and second handle portions pivotally movable between open and closed positions. A blade carriage within the assembly carries a blade. When the handle portions are in the open position the blade carriage is exposed to enable cutting blade replacement. A threaded fastener mounted on the handle assembly includes a knob portion to enable the fastener to be manually moved between a locking position in which the fastener holds the handle portions in their closed position and a releasing position in which the handle portions can be moved between open and closed positions. A detent assembly is operatively connected to threaded fastener to releasably hold the fastener in its locking position. Abstract: A metallic housing utility knife and method for making the device with a soft over molded elastomeric cover to provide blister free comfort and slip proof safety. The cover or skin is molded into the unique structure of the housing in a fashion that results in mechanical bonds that embrace the cover on the housing. The knife includes flexible posts from the cover that project into the blade storage compartment of the housing to prevent internally stored spare blades from moving within the storage compartment. An elastomeric blade clamp integrally formed with the cover serves to restrict lateral movement of blades of varying sizes when installed in a cutting position within the knife assembly. A rear quick release latch and interlocking housing sections provide a convenient way to open and close the knife and assure that it is also secure and firmly held when locked in a safe cutting position.

Each compartment is sized to store a plurality of blades in side-by-side relation. Fresh blades are disposed in the front compartment and one end of each is advanced one at a time substantially out of the compartment into operative position by a carrier that is controlled by an actuator on the handle. When the active blade is to be replaced, it is moved by the carrier into the rear compartment, and a new blade may then be withdrawn from the front compartment into the operative position. The active blade when not in use is partially withdrawn into the front compartment. The cartridge is reversed when the one end of all the blades in the front compartment are used, placing what was the rear compartment at the front, and the unused end of each blade is advanced into the operative position and when used they are each moved to the rear compartment.
