  • Patent number: 7305768
Abstract: A hand tool—typically embodied as a knife—incorporates a blade or implement lock mechanism for securely locking the implement such as a blade in the open position. The lock mechanism locks the blade in the open position and allows it to be released so that the blade may be folded back into the closed position. The locking mechanism incorporates a safety mechanism that prevents the blade engaging lock from becoming unintentionally disengaged.

  • Patent number: 7249417
Abstract: A pocketknife has a handle, a blade, a safety lock and a spring. The handle has a blade seat, a cover, a cavity, a slide slot, a passage and a pivot slot. The blade is mounted pivotally in the cavity and has a proximal end, two opposite edge and two wheels. The wheels are attached respectively to the edges of the blade, and one wheel has an engaging element. The safety lock is mounted slidably in the handle and has a slide and a latch. The slide is mounted slidably in the slide slot. The latch engages detachably the engaging element in the locking wheel on the blade. The spring is mounted in the slide slot in the handle and presses the safety lock so that the latch on the slide engages the engaging element to securely hold the blade when the blade is open or closed.

  • Patent number: 7231718
Abstract: A locking tool includes a handle and an elongated tool blade having a body and a tang. The tool blade has a tang spline opening formed therein which defines an annular array of alternate spline teeth and splined slots. A transversely-extending lock member has a spline ring with an annular array of alternate spline ribs and spline grooves formed thereon complementary to the tang spline opening, and is translatable between a locked position and a released position. The tool blade is attached to the handle by the locking member such that when the lock member is in the released position, the tool blade is freely pivotable about the locking member. When the lock member is in the locked position, the spline ring engages the tang spline opening such that the tool blade is retained in one of a plurality of predetermined angular positions relative to the handle.

  • Patent number: 7222429
Abstract: A folding knife includes a handle having a distal portion and a proximal portion, and a blade rotatably connected to the distal portion of the handle. The blade may be moveable between an opened position and a closed position, and may have at least one lock member receiving recess formed therein. The folding knife may further include a lock bar pivotally connected to a medial portion of the handle and moveable between an engaged position and a disengaged position. The lock bar may include a lock member which contacts a respective portion of the blade adjacent the lock member receiving recess to define a contact point between the lock member and the blade when the blade is in the opened position and the lock bar is in the engaged position. The folding knife may also include a lock pin connected to the handle adjacent the lock member.

  • Patent number: 7181849
Abstract: In one embodiment of the present invention a laterally folding knife is described incorporating an actuator mechanism permitting the knife blade to be moved from open and closed positions without the need for a user to touch the blade. Further, the folding knife can be quickly opened or closed using a single finger or thumb. The knife blade is automatically locked in place in either open or closed position and therefore does not require a separate blade locking mechanism.

Abstract: A foldable tool retainer capable of updating the tool easily comprises an upper casing sheet; an upper pad; a work tool; a lower pad; a resisting sheet; and a lower casing sheet. When updating the work tool, it is only necessary to press the upper button to drive a buckling end of the upper control sheet to separate from the edge of a rotary shaft of the resisting sheet so that the lower pad can rotate around the ratchet shaft of the lower casing sheet again and the rotary shaft moves out of the notch of the upper pad. Then other components are detached along a sequence of actions reversing to the assembly process.

  • Patent number: 7152327
Abstract: A folding knife is provided having a handle that pivotably holds a blade member adapted to be housed within the handle in a storage state, and to be deployed to a service state by swinging laterally and forwardly in a path orthogonal to the handle. The handle is constructed of facing first and second members elongated between front and rear extremities, and defining a compartment which houses the blade member. The second handle member is pivotably joined to the first handle member in a manner to permit rearward swinging movement which opens the compartment to allow deployment of the blade member. Forwardly returning movement of the second handle member secures the blade member in its service state.

Abstract: A releasable, double locking knife including a body having a cavity and a pair of opposed arms, each having a free end extending into the cavity, and a blade connected to the body for rotation between the closed position wherein the blade is disposed substantially within the cavity and an open position wherein the blade is disposed substantially outside the cavity. The opposed arms engage side surfaces of the blade when the blade is in the closed position to resist movement of the blade out of the closed position. The arms further engage stop surfaces on the blade when the blade is in the open position, thereby locking the blade in the open position. The blade further includes a release mechanism for moving the arms out of locking engagement with the blade to permit movement of the blade out of the open position.

Abstract: A shock absorbing blade stop for a folding knife comprising; an elongated, cylinder shaped body, with o-ring grooves provided near its opposite ends. O-rings of a resilient material affixed to the o-ring grooves and the completed assembly located within the handle frames of a folding knife by means of location holes provided in the handle frames for that purpose. Location holes are of an inside diameter closely corresponding to the outside diameter of the mounted o-rings thereby producing a shock absorbing effect in response to the impact of a fast opening blade colliding against the blade stop. An enlarged center section of the blade stop is provided with an increased diameter slightly larger than the locating holes of the handle frames so as to capture the blade stop within the space between handle frames.

Abstract: A folding cutting tool which includes a handle having gripping depressions and a plurality of cutting blades. The blades are rotably connected to the ends of the handle to allow them to be folded into the handle or extend from the handle during operation of the tool. At least one blade has at least one depression that aligns with a depression on the handle. Alternatively, the blades of the tool may fold far enough into the handle to not interfere with the depressions in the handle. The depressions allow for the user to adequately grip the handle to perform a cutting operation.

Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for joining together the surfaces of wood or similar material by introducing laser light between the surfaces just before the surfaces are forced together. A preferred embodiment of the joining apparatus is a generally broad wedge-shaped blade having planar lower and upper surfaces, which converge toward each other to terminate along an intersecting edge. The blade is generally hollow with a cavity for passing optical fibers carrying laser light to a transparent window attached to the intersecting edge of the blade. Laser light passes through the window and is directed into the closed cavity that is bounded by the windowed intersecting edge of the wedge and the two surfaces of the material, which surfaces converge to the closed end of the cavity where the material is joining together.

Abstract: A knife has an implement lying in an implement plane and an attachment structure lying in the implement plane. The attachment structure is integral with the knife body with a fixed portion extending laterally from the top of the knife body. A gate is pivotably attached to a first part of the fixed portion of the attachment structure and pivotable in the implement plane between a closed position and an open position. When the gate is opened, the attachment may be clipped to another article, and the knife is releasably attached to the other article when the gate is closed.

  • Patent number: 6574868
Abstract: A knife having a handle component and a blade component, the blade component comprising a pair of opposed flanking side members and a replaceable blade insert confined and held therebetween. The side members are joined together by a blade insert locator and a spacer element at the region of connection to the handle so as to provide a slot forward of the handle for inserting the replaceable blade. The blade insert is configured to engage the blade insert locator and the spacer element so as to be held in the slot completely within the confines of the blade component. A blade insert locking structure is mounted on the blade component so as to be structurally and functionally independent of the handle component. The handle component and blade component may be of either the fixed or folding type and the blade insert may include a gut hook on its terminal end.
