  • Patent number: 11142020
Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and techniques for producing complex components using a reinforced thermoplastic material. The complex components can include contoured or curved outer surfaces, and in some cases define a cavity. In certain examples, one or more thermoplastic materials are arranged to form a wheel component, such as that adapted to define a rim of the bicycle. Thermal bonding can be used to join multiple reinforced thermoplastic materials to one another in order to form a cavity of the wheel component or other complex shape. In certain examples, a portion of a tooling assembly can be pressurized to maintain a shape of the cavity during thermal bonding and cooling. This can remove the need for a sacrificial bladder or other structure that would maintain the shape of the cavity, allowing for a seamless final component, optionally absent indicia of bladder exit or other seams.

  • Patent number: 8757733
Abstract: Embodiments described herein improve airflow around the bicycle wheels by providing for one or more of: (1) a optimum leading edge width of a rim for preventing early stall in cross winds, while still allowing for sufficient stability without undue drag, while not unnecessarily increasing the rotating wheel and drag on the frame; (2) a sidewall shape with a subtle camber angle at the leading, which defines a rate of radius change at the max width of the rim—which further defines the max width and placement along the chord length for optimizing the aerodynamic properties of the rim; (3) a continuous rate of change of curvature at a spoke face, which fundamentally improves the performance and stability by generating a side force at higher yaw angles; and (4) wheel sets with a wider front rim relative to a narrower rear wheel to assist in flow attachment in high crosswind areas.

  • Publication number: 20130026816
Abstract: Application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer structures to metal vehicle wheels is effective in reducing the mass of the wheel while retaining suitable stiffness in the wheel structure. For maximum effect the reinforced polymer structure and the metal wheel must operate cooperatively. Because of the wide range of operating temperatures experienced by wheels and the large difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between metals and carbon fiber reinforced composites attachment of the polymer structure to the wheel by adhesive alone is problematical. However a wheel with an effective and durable reinforcement may be fabricated by confining, through mechanical interference, the reinforced polymer in a cavity in or on the spoke and by preheating the wheel before curing the polymer.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a spoked wheel rim for a wheeled vehicle, a mounted assembly incorporating this rim for such a vehicle and a method for assembling this mounted assembly. The invention applies in particular to the mounted assemblies for bicycles. This rim (1) has two rim edges (5 and 6) and a rim bottom (2) covered by an annular ribbon (10) that is flexible and sealed against the inflation gas that is intended to receive a tire and that is fitted with an inflation valve for inflating this tire, this ribbon having a central portion (12) conforming to the shape of this rim bottom and two lateral portions (15 and 16) protruding axially from these rim edges. According to the invention, these lateral portions are capable of having a portion of their axial width cut off by the detachment of two respective peripheral sections (15a and 16a) of these lateral portions, so that this ribbon extends from one of the said edges to the other following this detachment.

Abstract: A fiber reinforced plastic bicycle wheel rim is formed of six segments per side and formed in a section having precisely formed, machinable brake surfaces and preferably combining inner high modulus fiber reinforced plastic lamination as a main structural body and an outer lamination of improved frictional coefficient materials at the braking surfaces. The main structural body with overlapped individual sheets of unidirectional fiber reinforced plastic, having crossing fibers, in segments, and continuous unidirectional fiber bundles in areas of concentrated load, enables strong, light wheels for sew up or clincher tires to be formed. Because of the unique thermodynamic properties of a clincher bicycle wheel rim, an all-composite rim formed with an epoxy matrix with a Tg of 350 or greater is advantageous.

Abstract: A bead seat clincher bicycle rim includes a tire supporting surface bounded by a first straight sidewall and a second straight sidewall wherein said bicycle rim does not comprise bead hooks. A method for forming a bead seat clincher rim includes forming composite plies in a bottom portion of a mold and placing a single piece upper portion over the bottom portion. A bladder is inflated in the center of the mold to form a closed cavity within the rim. The rim is cured and the bladder is deflated. The single piece upper portion and bottom portion of the mold are removed.

  • Patent number: 7918513
Abstract: The invention concerns a vehicle wheel, in particular for passenger vehicles and motorcycles, comprising a rim for receiving a tire and a spoke unit or a wheel disc connecting the rim to the hub. The rim is made of plastic material and the spoke unit or the wheel disc of metal. The rim is connected to the spoke unit or wheel disc by form-closure and/or by force-closure of the material. The invention aims at enabling the wheel disc to be accurately positioned relative to the rim base and at providing a wheel with an attractive design. Therefore, the spoke unit, or the wheel disc are connected via at least one connecting element guided through the rim base and the connecting element is housed in the spoke unit or the wheel disc so as to be completely covered by a tire or by the spoke unit or the wheel disc.

Abstract: There is provided a vehicle wheel that can suppress any detachment of a sub air chamber from a well portion when a fixing member between the sub air chamber and the well portion becomes defective by any possibility. A vehicle wheel comprises a sub-air-chamber member which reduces any air column resonance of a tire and which is disposed on an outer circumference surface of a well portion of a rim. The sub-air-chamber member is fixed on the well-portion outer circumference surface, the sub-air-chamber member is covered by a cover made of a rubber from an external side, and the cover is fixed on an outer circumference surface of the rim at both sides of the sub-air-chamber member in a rim width direction.

Abstract: There is provided a vehicle wheel which can reduce a rolling resistance by rising a tire temperature with a simple structure. A heat-insulation rubber is pasted on all circumference surface of a portion of an outer circumference surface of a rim other than a bead seating portion where a bead portion of a tire closely contacts and a rim flange portion. The heat-insulation rubber suppresses any heat transfer from air in a tire air chamber and from the internal surface of the tire to the rim at the outer circumference surface of the rim which contacts the air in the tire air chamber.
