Transformer Coupled Patents (Class 333/177)
  • Patent number: 7078987
Abstract: A tuned resonator circuit topology is disclosed that permits implementation of narrow band-pass filters having high loaded Q and optimal coupling (for low insertion loss) using a parallel tuned resonator topology at frequencies in the 1 to 2 GHz range and beyond. The topology consists of a mirror image of the parallel tuned circuit about the signal line of a conventional parallel tuned circuit to effect a cancellation of virtually all of the induced currents between the inductive elements of the resonators. This reduction in induced currents reduces the magnetic coupling between the resonators, thereby offsetting the increase in overall coupling between the resonators as frequency increases, and thereby serves to maintain optimal coupling between the resonators as the frequency of operation increases. Moreover, the mirror image topology increases the parallelism between the inductive elements in the resonators, thereby decreasing the inductance values and permitting an increase in capacitance values.

  • Patent number: 6924713
Abstract: Many current electronic systems incorporate expensive or sensitive electrical components. Because electrical energy is often generated or transmitted at high voltages, the power supplies to these electronic systems must be carefully designed. Power supply design must ensure that the electrical system being supplied with power is not exposed to excessive voltages or currents. In order to isolate power supplies from electrical equipment, many methods have been employed. These methods typically involve control systems or signal transfer methods. However, these methods are not always suitable because of their drawbacks. The present invention relates to transmitting information across an interface. More specifically, the present invention provides an apparatus for transmitting both AC and DC information across a high bandwidth magnetic interface with low distortion.

  • Patent number: 6788169
Abstract: In a broadband communication system there are multi-stage power amplifier systems for amplifying the power of radio-frequency (RF) communication signals. Each stage of the amplifier system results in composite triple beat (CTB) distortion, and if the phase of the CTB distortions are approximately the same (i.e. are in-phase), then the amplitudes of the distortions are added (i.e. “20 dB” rule). The amplifier system of the invention includes one or more phase filters positioned in series between the power amplifier stages. The phase filters are adapted to shift the phase of the communication signals, so that the phase of CTB distortions, resulting from the amplification of the communication signals in the amplifier stages between the phase filters, are substantially different (i.e. are out-of-phase). Thus, only the power of the CTB distortions are added (i.e. “10 dB” rule).

Abstract: The present invention, in various embodiments, provides techniques for reducing effects of electrical impedance. In one embodiment, the impedance is in the form of inductance and arises from vias in a termination PCB and from resistors used on the PCB. In one embodiment, a power plane is placed near the resistors. Additional power and ground planes are created in parallel among themselves and perpendicular to the vias, which cause capacitance to be formed between each pair of the ground and power planes, the ground planes and the vias, and the power planes and the vias. In one aspect, the power plane near the resistors and the formed capacitance allow the high-frequency returned currents to flow through a smaller loop and thus be affected by a smaller inductance. Additionally, the created capacitance reduces both the total impedance of the vias and the resistors and any impedance that result from power-ground discontinuity.

Abstract: A band pass filter includes LC resonators defined by laminated layers and is constructed such that the resonant frequencies of the LC resonators shift in the same direction when laminated layers deviate from each other. In the arrangement of the band pass filter, the inductor pattern of a first LC resonator and the capacitor pattern of a second LC resonator are disposed on a surface of a first ceramic sheet. The inductor pattern and the capacitor pattern extend to the same side of the first ceramic sheet. In addition, the capacitor pattern of the first LC resonator and the inductor pattern of the second LC resonator are disposed on a surface of a second ceramic sheet. The capacitor pattern and the inductor pattern extend to the same surface of the second sheet.

Abstract: A multilayered LC composite component in which a fine adjustment to a desired frequency can be performed, includes multilayered body sheets on which internal electrodes including capacitor electrodes and inductor electrodes are stacked via dielectric layers. On surfaces of the multilayered body sheets, there are disposed a ground internal electrode and input/output extraction electrodes. A trimming electrode is arranged on the multilayered body such that the trimming electrode is opposed to some of the internal electrodes and is electrically connected to the ground internal electrode. In order to make a rough frequency adjustment, insular electrodes are isolated from the trimming electrode by trimming grooves. Then, a coating material is filled in each of the trimming grooves to make a fine adjustment.

Abstract: A series tuned resonator circuit topology permits implementation of narrow band-pass filters having higher loaded quality factors (QL) and lower insertion loss than was previously achievable in the prior art employing such a topology. The topology employs an additional parallel capacitor for the series-tuned topology, with very low C/L ratios to achieve the combination of higher values of QL, low insertion loss and a steeper roll-off between the pass-band and the stop-band (at both lower and higher frequencies). Air coils are used to achieve the large inductor values desirable for the series-tuned topology.

  • Patent number: 6215374
Abstract: Parallel and series tuned resonator circuit topologies are disclosed that permit implementation of narrow band-pass filters having high loaded Q and optimal coupling (for low insertion loss) at frequencies in approximately the 50 MHz to 1 GHz. The topologies employ an additional series capacitor for the parallel-tuned topology, and an additional series capacitor for the series-tuned topology, the capacitors having values counterintuitive to those of skill in the art to produce 6th order transfer functions out of what were once lower order resonators. Multistrip transmission lines are exploited in the parallel-tuned circuit to reduce the inductance of the resonators to achieve a very large skew in the ratios of inductance to capacitance, to increase Q while maintaining optimal coupling between the resonators of the tuned resonator circuits. Air coils are used in the series-tuned topology to achieve the large inductor values desirable for this topology.

  • Patent number: 6188298
Abstract: The present invention relates to a transformer having a conductive element spiraling along the length of an insulated wire of the coil. When formed into plurality of adjacent turns, the conductive element couples one of the plurality of turns with another of the plurality of turns. The conductive element increases the series capacitance of the transformer circuit. A resistive element may also spiral along the length of the insulated wire to couple one of the plurality of turns with another of the plurality of turns. The resistive element not only increases the series capacitance of the transformer, but also increases the series conductance of the transformer circuit. The increase in the series resistance increases the dampening of the switching resonance.

A transformer has primary and secondary windings, each having one end connected to the respective input and output terminals, and another end connected to a common connection. The windings are wound on a high permeability magnetic core in such a way as to promote flux leakage and with a winding polarity such that flux cancellation occurs when current flows through the windings in series. A capacitor is connected between the common terminal and the common connection of the primary and secondary windings. The capacitor has a large impedance at low frequencies such that low frequency current flows through both the windings in series and flux cancellation occurs.
