  • Patent number: 4646006
Abstract: A clamping mechanism for mounting a monitoring device to a electrical cable includes a pair of clamp members biased for engaging movement toward one another. A compression member between the clamp members ordinarily prevents engaging movement of the members. When pressed against a cable, the compression member deforms to allow the clamp members to move toward one another and encircle the cable and clamp the device thereon.

  • Patent number: 4558276
Abstract: A device and method for sensing current flowing in an electrical conductor. An open loop of flexible magnetically conductive material is positioned to substantially encircle a current carrying conductor. Two ends of the loop overlap to form a flux gap between them. Magnetic flux of the magnetic field associated with the current is concentrated in the flux gap. A Hall Effect transducer mounted in the flux gap senses the magnetic field and hence the current flowing in the conductor.

  • Patent number: 4518913
Abstract: A "clip-on" probe for measuring electric currents by operation of the Hall effect comprises a ring of magnetizable material, at least part of which is mounted in a set of opposed jaws (4,5). The jaws are movable between an open position in which the jaws can be placed over a conductor and a closed position in which the jaws meet around the conductor and the ring is substantially complete. To facilitate removal of the probe when a heavy current is flowing through a conductor between the jaws, the jaws are provided with an opening mechanism with an actuator (7) so constructed and arranged that initial pressure on the actuator urges the jaws (4,5) apart from the closed position at a first mechanical advantage and, after an initial movement of the actuator, subsequent pressure urges the jaws towards the fully open position at a second lower mechanical advantage.

  • Patent number: 4456873
Abstract: A fault indicator for indicating the occurrence of a fault current in an electrical conductor includes a core assembly which attaches a circuit module to a monitored conductor and provides a concentrated magnetic flux indicative of the current level in the conductor. A magnetic reed switch in the circuit module responds to the magnetic flux in the core assembly to condition an indicator in a remote indicator module to a fault-indicating state in the event of a fault. To facilitate installation and removal of the circuit module from the conductor, the core assembly is formed by a plurality of laminations secured together and arranged in a generally rectangular configuration with their ends juxtaposed along one side thereof and joined with magnetically conductive interlocking coupling members.

  • Patent number: 4337449
Abstract: A movable magnet 1 turns in the air-gap formed by pole pieces 3', 4' of a stationary magnetic circuit 2. The magnetic circuit 2 is formed as one piece, and has a deformable connection portion 6, the magnetic properties of which are greatly inferior to those of the remainder of the circuit which enables the branches to move apart for introduction of the coil during assembly. This arrangement facilitates manufacture, while not limiting the diameter of the coil to the dimensions of the air-gap and maintaining a high degree of precision of the air-gap.

  • Patent number: 4258348
Abstract: A transformer for measuring current flowing through a conductor includes a U-shaped housing which is adapted to be received about the conductor. A closure member is secured by a sliding hinge assembly to one distal end of the housing, and is adapted to be latched between the distal ends. Within the housing a plurality a U-shaped core laminations are disposed in adjacent laminated groups. The closure member includes a plurality of laminated groups which are disposed to interleave with the distal ends of the U-shaped laminations to form a continuous magnetic circuit about the conductor. Equal secondary windings about the legs of the U-shaped laminations are connected in series to counteract any proximity effect of the conductor within the transformer.

  • Patent number: 4234863
Abstract: An inductive pickup clip comprising two telescoping body portions between which is compressed a main body spring and within which are mounted respective core portions. When the clip is closed, said core portions define an opening adapted to receive therethrough an electric wire during use. The end portions of at least one core portion are spring loaded to prevent chipping or breakage of the core portions and to insure correct alignment of the cores when the clip is closed. A bi-stable latching mechanism is employed which, when latched, holds the clip closed, and when unlatched, permits the spring loaded telescoping body portions to assume an open configuration under the urging of the main body spring therebetween. Such a latching mechanism insures that when the slip is closed about the electric wire to be monitored, the user must close it against the force of the main body spring, thereby further preventing chipping or breakage of the core portions.

  • Patent number: 4071824
Abstract: A pair of relatively movable, shrouded jaws are provided for a hook-on type measuring instrument to insulate the conductive ends of the jaws from contact with high voltage electrical conductors on which the instrument is periodically clamped during its normal application. The shrouded ends of the jaws are characterized by incorporating cup-shaped insulated recesses within which the uninsulated ends of the soft iron magnetic ends of the jaws are disposed substantially below the outwardly extending lips of the recesses thereby to prevent the iron from being inadvertently placed in contact with a high voltage conductor when the jaws are opened to either place them around such a conductor or to remove them therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4005380
Abstract: The halves of a ferrite core respectively set in the jaws of a pick-up clip are held in plastic holders loosely mounted in the respective clip jaws with compression springs between the holders and the jaws that are weaker than the spring that pulls the clip jaws together. This arrangement enables the core halves to accommodate to each other to produce a flush fit and reduces the impact on closing the clip which the main spring would otherwise produce. A conducting coating is provided for electrical shielding against stray fields.

  • Patent number: 3984798
Abstract: The disclosed device is adapted for placing a ferrite core onto an energized power distribution system cable and includes a pair of generally U-shaped core holders. Each holder receives a core half which is loosely retained within the concave portion of the holder by an elastomeric "O" ring. The holders are pivotally mounted at one of their end portions to opposite ends of a saddle member wherein the free ends of the holders, and therefore the core halves, are translatable into either abutting or open relationship. The length of the saddle member is selected so as to provide a stop which limits the maximum opening of the core holders. An eye bolt threadedly engages the saddle member along a threaded transverse bore therein wherein the threaded end of the bolt engages overlapping portions of the pivot ends of the core holders. An elastomeric sleeve surrounds the saddle member and the overlapping pivot ends of the core holders and urges the holders toward their abutting position.
