  • Patent number: 10496042
Abstract: An alarm unit includes an apparatus and a method of maximizing the efficiency of an alarm function that wakes up a sleeping user. An image input unit capable of photographing an eye image as a criterion for determining if the user has woken up is mounted on an alarm control apparatus. The image input unit mounted alarm control apparatus photographs a face image of the user, detects the eye region from the face image, and then determines a state of whether the user has woken up or not based on movement of the pupils in the eye region. If it is determined that the user keeps a waking state for a certain time, an alarm function is cancelled. By doing this, the alarm unit can help prevent the user from easily cancelling an alarm and maximize the efficiency of an alarm function that wakes up a sleeping user.

  • Patent number: 10491739
Abstract: Many devices are configured to present notifications to a user in an environment, such as mobile phones that ring or buzz to notify the user of an incoming call, and navigation devices that present verbal instructions to a driver of a vehicle. Many such devices present such audio notifications when information with potential relevance to the user is initially identified, but such techniques may interrupt an activity of the user, such as a conversation. Instead, a device may monitor an activity of the user within an environment to detect a notification opportunity when notifications may be presented to the user without interrupting the activity (e.g., a break in the conversation, or a gap of idle time between a first scheduled appointment and a second scheduled appointment). The device may present notifications of pertinent information to the user during the notification opportunities rather than interrupting the activity of the user.

The device comprises a portion which acquires an estimated time until a vehicle reaches to an obstacle; a portion which judges based on a braking operation amount and a braking operation speed value if the driver performed an urgent braking operation; and a portion which determines the start of a braking force assist control when an urgent braking operation is judged in a case that the estimated time is less than a first predetermined time, wherein, if the estimated time is less than a second predetermined time shorter than the first predetermined time, the urgent braking operation is judged when the braking operation amount exceeds a threshold value irrespective of the braking operation speed value.

Abstract: The method, system, and computer-readable medium facilitates monitoring a vehicle operator during the course of vehicle operation to determine whether the vehicle operator is in an emotionally impaired state (e.g., aggressive or agitated) and presenting appropriate stimuli (e.g., music or sound recordings) to the vehicle operator when impairment is detected. The vehicle operator, the environment surrounding the vehicle, or forces acting on the vehicle may be monitored using a variety of sensors, including optical sensors, accelerometers, or biometric sensors (e.g., skin conductivity, heart rate, or voice modulation). When the vehicle operator is determined to be in an emotionally impaired state, stimuli are selected to improve the emotional state of the vehicle operator. The selection is based on sensor data and data regarding prior responses of the vehicle operator to various stimuli. After selection, the stimuli are presented to the vehicle operator while monitoring continues.

  • Patent number: 10121084
Abstract: Disclosed subject matter relates generally to image processing that includes a method for detecting drowsiness state of a vehicle user independent of factors such ethnicities, gender and other differences of an individual. A drowsiness detection system receives current images of the vehicle user from an image capturing device in a current time frame. Further, an eye closure ratio of the vehicle user is determined in the current time frame using eye closure parameters extracted from the current images in real-time and a profile of the vehicle user. Further, the eye closure ratio is normalized using a scaling factor computed in real-time using normalizing parameters extracted from the current images in real-time and the profile. Finally, a Percentage Eye Closure (PEC) value of the vehicle user is determined in the current time frame using the normalized eye closure ratio of the vehicle to detect drowsiness state of the vehicle user.

Abstract: Aspects of automatically detecting periods of sleep of a user of a wearable electronic device are discussed herein. For example, in one aspect, an embodiment may obtain a set of features for periods of time from motion data obtained from a set of one or more motion sensors in the wearable electronic device or data derived therefrom. The wearable electronic device may then classify the periods of time into one of a plurality of statuses of the user based on the set of features determined for the periods of time, where the statuses are indicative of relative degree of movement of the user. The wearable electronic device may also derive blocks of time each covering one or more of the periods of time during which the user is in one of a plurality of states, wherein the states include an awake state and an asleep state.

Abstract: Mental state analysis is performed by obtaining video of an individual as the individual interacts with a computer, either by performing various operations, such as driving a vehicle or being a passenger in a vehicle, or by consuming a media presentation. The video is analyzed to determine eye-blink information on the individual, such as eye-blink rate or eye-blink duration. The blink-rate information is compensated for a context. Blinking for a group of people of which the individual is a part is evaluated. Mental states of the individual are inferred for the blink event based on the blink event, the blink duration of the individual, the difference in blinking between the individual and the remainder of the group, and the blink-rate information that was compensated. The blink-rate information and associated mental states can be used to modify an advertisement, a media presentation, a digital game, or vehicle controls.
