  • Patent number: 7283112
Abstract: A MEMS optical display system includes an illumination source for providing illumination light, a collimating lens for receiving the illumination light and forming from it collimated illumination light, and a microlens array having an array of lenslets for receiving the illumination light from the collimating lens. The converging microlens array directs the illumination light through an array of pixel apertures in an aperture plate to a microelectrical mechanical reflector array positioned opposite the aperture plate. The microelectrical mechanical reflector array includes an array of microelectrical mechanical actuators that support reflectors in alignment with the array of pixel apertures and selectively orients the reflectors to direct the illumination light back through the pixel apertures (to form part of a display image) or against the aperture plate (to be blocked). The illumination light passing back through the pixel apertures passes through the microlens array and a beamsplitter to a display screen.

  • Patent number: 7277080
Abstract: The display system comprises a screen (1) made of an array of metal triangular facets (30) which are driven in and out by an array of pneumatic pistons (2) located behind the screen (1). The rear ends of the pistons (2) are flexibly connected by damped pivots (8) to a structural frame (7). The front ends of the pistons (2) are flexibly coupled to connection nodes between the facets (30) by connection devices (10) which have legs (13) which may splay apart as the pistons are pushed forwards. The pistons (2) may therefore be used to give the screen (1) of the facets (30) a visible 3-dimensional surface effect such as a sinusoidal deformation (101). The display system also includes an electronic control system for driving the pistons (2). The electronic control system may use a stored data file to produce a particular surface effect on the screen (1). Alternatively, the control system may respond in real-time to an input such as ambient sound, ambient lighting conditions or the like.

  • Patent number: 7158278
Abstract: Electromechanical shutter and display comprising a two-dimensional matrix of such shutters are proposed, in which the membrane under the force of electrostatic attraction moves from its original position parallel to the substrate plane into a final position normal to the substrate plane, thereby transferring the shutter, or display pixel, from its “off” state into its “on” state. To produce the “on” state, the electrostatic force is applied only to a narrow conductive strip placed on the side of the membrane and rotates the membrane around the torsion hinges attached to this strip. Two-and three-electrode shutter and pixel configurations are considered. Both versions provide a bi-stable membrane behavior, which implies that the voltage needed to transfer the membrane into the “on” state is larger than the voltage needed to maintain the membrane in this state. This feature of bi-stability allows realization of functions “pixel hold” and “pixel select” using a simple passive matrix architecture.

Abstract: Due to an ever growing shortage of conventional energy sources, there is an increasingly intense interest in harnessing solar energy. The instant invention can contribute to the goal of achieving environmentally clean solar energy to be competitive with conventional energy sources. Method and apparatus are presented for coupling to a transparent sheet with an embedded array of preformed or formable mirrored micro-balls for use in a solar energy concentrator, and functionally similar applications such as optical switches and solar rocket assist. Mirrored micro-balls and particulate formable mirrors in cells are covered with a thin spherical shell of lubricating liquid so that they are free to rotate in an almost frictionless encapsulation in the sheet. Induced polarization electric or magnetic dipoles in the mirrors provide a method of controlling the alignment of the mirrored balls. Abstract: This invention deals with the broad general concept for dynamic reflection, illumination and direct image projection. A mini-optics reflection and focussing system is presented that ranges from interior illumination, to exterior illumination, to large scale space based illumination, to ordinary and to telescopic image formation. It can be used both as a source of illumination, and to project images, figures, and the written word. This system has broad applications such as dynamic full color displays. Its use of a novel induced dipole coupling for rotation of planar mirrors lets it operate with greater simplicity and efficiency than other display devices. Furthermore in its capacity as a high altitude active reflector of solar radiation, it can be utilized to supply illumination, energy, and provide climate control.

  • Patent number: 6879307
Abstract: A micromechanical panel display driver is shown in which only one driver and control bus are needed for each color. Furthermore, the elements are made with uniform film thicknesses, thereby minimizing the number of steps needed to fabricate the display. Here 6 bits are provided with temporal and aperture weighting. The use of temporal weighting generally requires the activation of most pixels twice/frame, which consumes considerable power. It should also be possible to eliminate temporal weighting by redistributing the contact area into a larger number of aperture weights and by adding a row electrode. Here pixels are activated only in response to a charge in the image. This generally reduces the drive power, since many pixels in a typical image do not change from frame to frame.

  • Patent number: 6864876
Abstract: A micro-mirror device for an image display apparatus which can change the travel path of incident light by pivoting a mirror, which corresponds to a pixel and can increase optical efficiency by pivoting the mirror in the direction of the sides of the mirror. The micro-mirror device for an image display apparatus includes a substrate, a landing pad provided on the substrate, and a pair of base electrodes provided on opposite sides of the landing pad. A pair of first posts protrude from the upper surface of the landing pad, and are isolated from each other by a predetermined interval. A girder, supported by the pair of first posts, pivots toward the sides of the base electrodes due to an electrostatic attraction. A second post protrudes from the upper surface of the girder. A mirror, which is supported by the second post, reflects incident light, and receives power via the landing pad.

  • Patent number: 6856303
Abstract: A pixel-based display utilizes persistence-of-vision to sweep text and graphics in a cylindrical plane, including time and date, custom messages and animations. The display is generated from a light array with a column of modulated light emitting elements, which is mounted on a rotating display assembly. Power and data are combined on a fixed control assembly and inductively coupled to the display assembly. A control assembly processor interprets a display application language that describes display-specific tasks to generate command, mode, character and graphic data for the display assembly. The control assembly processor also reads a trigger position sensor and adds a trigger delay to generate a virtual trigger command, which provides for flexible display positioning and scrolling display effects.

Actuator elements corresponding to a number of picture elements are arranged in the driving section. A picture element assembly is provided on each of the actuator elements. The picture element assembly includes a light-reflecting layer and a color filter. A light-absorptive material is filled between the display panel and an actuator substrate. The actuator elements are selectively driven according to an attribute of an input image signal for controlling displacement of the picture element assembly in a direction closer to or away from the display panel, thereby adjusting degree of light-absorption and/or light reflection between the display panel and the picture element assembly so that a screen image corresponding to the image signal is displayed on the display panel.
