  • Patent number: 7959300
Abstract: A projection image display device including a display plane for displaying an image, a projection mechanism projecting an image on the display plane, and an imaging mechanism arranged on the same side of the display plane as the projection mechanism for imaging the display plane. The imaging mechanism is arranged at a position where a position symmetric with respect to the display plane of the projection mechanism is out of the range of the field angle of the imaging mechanism. By arranging the imaging mechanism at a position where no direct reflecting light of the light source of the projection mechanism comes, it is possible to prevent generation of a hot spot.

Abstract: An information processing apparatus includes a calculation unit and a conversion unit. A shot of an image displayed on a display under evaluation is taken, and first and second areas are defined in a resultant captured image. The calculation unit performs a calculation such that a pixel value of a pixel in the first area is compared with a pixel value of a pixel in the second area, and the size of an image of a pixel of the display on the captured image, and the angle of the first area with respect to the image of the pixel of the display on the captured image are determined from the comparison result. The conversion unit converts data of the captured image of the display into data of each pixel of the display, based on the size of the image of the pixel and the angle of the first area.

The transformation matrix makes use of properties of light transport relating a projector to a camera. If the resolution a camera is lower than that of a projector within said projection system, then the transformation matrix will have holes where image data corresponding to a projector pixel will have been lost. In this, case, new image are generated to fill-in the holes.

  • Patent number: 7889235
Abstract: A PC 40 outputs a picture signal for a white color to a TV 100, and generates chromaticity information by measuring luminance values of respective RGB color components from a picture displayed on the TV 100, thereby determining whether the chromaticity information undergoes a change by varying an output of any of the RGB color components by a predetermined amount. Subsequently, when the chromaticity information has not undergone a change, the contrast of the TV 100 is lowered by a predetermined amount, and re-acquisition re-determination of chromaticity information is executed. On the other hand, when the chromaticity information has undergone a change, determination is made on whether the chromaticity information substantially matches chromaticity information representing white, and in the affirmative case, a white balance adjustment value is stored in an EEPROM 112 while in the negative case, the re-acquisition/re-determination of chromaticity information is repeated.

Abstract: In an image calibration device 10, a calibration pattern is projected onto a screen 4 from each projector 3 under control of a personal computer or other calibration device 10a, pictures are taken by a digital camera or other image pick-up device 11, and the results are supplied to the calibration device 10a. The calibration device 10a uses the supplied picture data to calculate parameters in order to perform picture positioning, color adjustment, brightness adjustment and other adjustments and corrections, and based on the calculation results transforms the original picture data, generates and supplies signals indicating projection conditions to each of the projectors 3, and performs image calibration control of the pictures projected by each projector 3.

  • Patent number: 6753907
Abstract: The present invention provides automatic correction of any distortions produced when computer projection displays are misaligned with respect to the projection surface (such as keystoning). Although sophisticated LCD projectors now offer partial solutions to this problem, they require specialized hardware and time-consuming manual adjustment. The two key concepts in the present invention are: (1) using an uncalibrated camera to observe the projected image; and (2) the image to be displayed is pre-warped so that the distortions induced by the misaligned projection system will exactly undo the distortion. The result is that an arbitrarily mounted projector (in an unknown orientation) still displays a perfectly aligned and rectilinear image.

Abstract: A methods and apparatuses are disclosed for determining the state of elements in an image. The elements can be arranged in any regular pattern, such as a matrix of LCD display elements. The state of the elements is determined by extracting a characteristic of the elements, such as intensity, and processing the characteristic to provide comparison criteria, such as a difference value. The comparison criteria are then used to determine the state of the element alone or in combination with other comparisons, such as average intensity comparisons. Several comparisons and variations thereof are disclosed, as well as the preferred ordering and configuration of comparisons for LCD displays. Also disclosed is an embodiment where a model of the elements is generated and used to inspect the elements.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for adaptive compensation of chrominance, aiming at the optimization of colors of electronic images. The invention includes the experimental data obtained when the best viewing effects are achieved, the division of color-gamut cells according to visual characteristics, the preset compensation characteristics that have different amplifications for different color-gamut cells, the real-time recognition of color-gamut cells that the signals belong to, and appropriate compensation that is done according to the color-gamut cells. The characteristic of the compensation is that each pixel gets its own amplification dynamically, which makes the dominant wavelength, chroma and relative brightness of all the image colors meet the requirement of best self-adaptive color reproduction automatically. As a result, colorful images with high qualities can be acquired.

Abstract: The present invention enables a user to automatically calibrate a projector-camera system to recover the mapping from a given point in the source (pre-projection) image and its corresponding point in the camera image, and vice versa. One or more calibration patterns are projected onto a flat surface with possibly unknown location and orientation by a projector with possibly unknown location, orientation and focal length. Images of these patterns are captured by a camera mounted at a possibly unknown location, orientation and with possibly unknown focal length. Parameters for mapping between the source image and the camera image are computed. The present invention can become an essential component of a projector-camera system, such as automatic keystone correction and vision-based control of computer systems.

Abstract: A method for evaluating the image quality of a color liquid crystal display (LCD), and a system for measuring the modulation transfer function (MTF) for use in the evaluation of the image quality. The image quality evaluation method involves measuring the MTF at a predetermined position on the screen of an LCD, and the image quality is evaluated using the measured MTF. The MTF measuring system, which includes a linear charge coupled device (CCD) camera equipped with a V(&lgr;) filter, is able to accurately measure the image quality of a color LCD by setting the measuring conditions through computer simulation. In addition, the resolution and signal-to-noise characteristics of an image displayed on the screen can be evaluated based on the measured MTF. Also, the problem of truncation of the line spread function (LSF) can be solved by fixing the scanning width. The spectral response characteristics of detectors can be made like those of the human eye using the V(&lgr;) filter.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for analyzing the brightness characteristics of a projected image and using the analyzed characteristics to improve the appearance of the projected image is disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, the brightness characteristics of the projected image are analyzed at selected points across the raster of the image. An analysis array or array of data elements including brightness components corresponding to detail elements is then generated. The data elements in the array are then used to create compensation signals that are applied to the projected image through, for example, an overlay of smoothing factors or generation of a smoothing curve, to enhance the quality or appearance of the image by improving the regularity of brightness in all areas of the image. This regularity of brightness across the full span of the image is useful as a general improvement to the image and as a compensation for projector or projection surface brightness anomalies.
