Abstract: Disclosed herein are an apparatus and a method for automatically setting an external device (100) connected to a digital television (200). The specific region function and user language function are automatically set and controlled in the external device (100) based on data set in the TV using the HDMI CEC protocol. In addition, when a digital versatile disc (DVD) is played, a subtitle is automatically set to the user-set language set in the external device (100). Therefore, there is no need to perform a separate DVD language setting. Furthermore, in the case where a plurality of external devices (HDMI equipment) are connected to the TV in a multi-connection manner, they are automatically set in a CEC operation. Therefore, when a plurality of external devices are installed or released, specific functions do not need to be set one by one for each of the external devices.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for conserving bandwidth within a network based on two or more different service levels. In an exemplary embodiment, programming that is simulcast on two or more program channels is mapped to one physical channel during periods when the programming is scheduled at only one service level (e.g., standard definition), thereby conserving bandwidth on the network that would otherwise be consumed by the simultaneous broadcast on the two or more channels. When the programming service level becomes heterogeneous across the channels (e.g., SD and HD simulcast), physical channel(s) supporting the HD content are provided within a local service area only “on-demand” using, for example, a switched digital channel allocation. Accordingly, no HD broadcast occurs within a given area until at least one user requests it, thereby further conserving network bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 7414670
Abstract: A video signal output apparatus is provided. Video format information that can be displayed on a video display apparatus is detected by an I/O unit from an input data. A comparing unit compares the detected video formats with video formats that can be converted by a converting unit, and then common video formats are set as selectable video formats and output as menu video. A user sees the menu video and selects a video format. Simultaneously with the converted digital video data, video format information is also inserted into the output data and then outputted. Accordingly, the video display apparatus switches the video format of the screen. The user can select a most suitable video format from the menu screen by only connecting the apparatuses, and then the video format of the video display image apparatus is also switched automatically.

Abstract: A video controller may include at least one video input port which may be programmably configured to receive either RGB or non-RGB color space signals. The video controller may programmably operate in either an RGB or non-RGB mode. In this way, the number of color space conversions may be reduced in some embodiments. For example, where a television output device is coupled to the video controller, the video controller may provide a non-RGB output signal.

  • Patent number: 7365798
Abstract: The procedure of the invention acquires a maximum RB value, which is a largest value of an R signal component and a B signal component, on the assumption that the signal format of an input video signal is an RGB signal, and obtains an RGB probability corresponding to a degree of largeness of the maximum RB value. The procedure also acquires a minimum color difference value, which is a smallest value of a color difference signal component, on the assumption that the signal format of the input video signal is a Y/color difference signal, and obtains a color difference probability corresponding to a degree of smallness of the minimum color difference value. The procedure compares the RGB probability with the color difference probability and thereby determines whether the signal format of the input video signal is the RGB signal or the Y/color difference signal. This arrangement effectively enhances the haccuracy of discrimination between the RGB signal and the Y/color difference signal.

  • Patent number: 7317493
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for processing a received television signal comprising one of a first type of television signal and a second type of television signal. Specifically, the method comprises amplifying the received television signal in response to a control signal. If the received television signal comprises the first type of television signal, the RF amplifier gain is reduced when the received television signal exceeds a first signal level. If the received television signal comprises the second type of television signal, the RF amplifier gain is reduced when the received television signal exceeds a second signal level. The second signal level is greater than the first signal level. A concomitant apparatus is also provided. As the first signal level is lower for the first type of television signal, reception of the first type of television signal is improved.

  • Patent number: RE40241
Abstract: At the transmitter side, carrier waves are modulated according to an input signal for producing relevant signal points in a signal space diagram. The input signal is divided into, two, first and second, data streams. The signal points are divided into signal point groups to which data of the first data stream are assigned. Also, data of the second data stream are assigned to the signal points of each signal point group. A difference in the transmission error rate between first and second data streams is developed by shifting the siganl points to other positions in the space diagram expressed at least in the polar coordinate system. At the receiver side, the first and/or second data streams can be reconstructed from a received signal. In TV broadcast service, a TV signal is divided by a transmitter into low and high frequency band components which are designated as first and second data streams respectively.
