    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing access to program channels, e.g., high definition programs and program channels which corresponding to a standard definition program and/or program channels are described. In accordance with the invention, a high definition auto tune function is supported. When enabled, in one exemplary embodiment, if a user selects a standard program definition channel, a check is automatically made to determine if a corresponding high definition program channel is available. The corresponding high definition program channel is a channel which provides the same program as on the selected standard definition channel but in high definition. When the auto tune function is enabled and a corresponding high definition channel is available, the device, e.g., set to box or tuner implementing the auto tune feature of the present invention, automatically tunes to the high definition channel instead of the standard definition channel.

    Abstract: Receiving apparatus for digital television signals digitizes a final intermediate frequency signal supplied from a triple-conversion radio receiver and synchrodynes the digitized final intermediate frequency signal to baseband. The triple-conversion radio receiver selects one of a plurality of digital television signals for upconversion to that portion of the electromagnetic frequency spectrum above the channels that are used for television broadcasting, amplifies a first intermediate-frequency signal in a first intermediate frequency band generated by that upconversion, amplifies a second intermediate-frequency signal in a second intermediate frequency band generated by downconverting the amplified first intermediate-frequency signal, and supplies a third intermediate-frequency signal in a third intermediate frequency band generated by downconverting the amplified second intermediate-frequency signal.

There is provided a separate frequency diversity control circuit connected to the receiver for testing the UHF and VHF signals received by the antennas and for switching the antennas to receive the best quality video and audio signals. The diversity circuit tests and reverses the antenna switch within the blanking gap of the horizontal synchronization lines of the TV signal. Memory circuits are coupled to the color decoder of the receiver for receiving at least one synchronization line of the video signal from the color decoder wherein either the complete video signal or corresponding color and luminance signals thereof are continuously read line by line.

Thus, if a broadcast channel goes off the air, or a channel which is not on the air is selected, a selected picture is retrieved from the memory and displayed on the television screen, thereby reducing eye fatigue.

    Abstract: In a monitor apparatus for a television system, a dynamic range of a brightness level of an image quality is widened, and an image very similar to a picture of a movie film is represented on the monitor apparatus. With employment of the YM function for performing the half blanking process by controlling the gain of the video processor, for instance, when an image quality mode such as "theater" mode is selected, the video processor outputs such a control signal that the overall picture period becomes an H level (namely, YM function is turned ON). In the video processor into which such a control signal is inputted, the gain control is carried out. The video signal outputted from the video processor owns such a waveform that the half blanking process has been executed over the entire picture period. The brightness of the overall image can be lowered by this YM function.

    Abstract: In an FM television signal angle modulated with luminance and chrominance information, there exists a high degree of correlation between picture elements occurring one line period apart. In an effort to steer the pass band of a tunable bandpass filter to the instantaneous frequency of the incoming television signal, a steering signal is developed which utilizes this high degree of correlation. For NTSC systems, luminance information is delayed by one-line period (63.5 us in the U.S.A.) and combined with suitable delayed chrominance information to form the filter's steering signal. For MAC systems, one-line delayed luminance and two-line delayed chrominance information are alternately applied to the filter as its steering signal. By steering the pass band of the filter to the incoming signal, maximum signal will be captured with minimum noise, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio of a color television system.
