Abstract: A liquid crystal display is provided with a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp including a glass mantle tube having an inside surface coated with a fluorescent film, cup-shaped electrodes disposed in opposite end parts of the mantle tube with their open ends opening into a discharge region in the mantle tube. A discharge inducing ITO film is formed in a part near each of the cup-shaped electrodes of the inside surface of the mantle tube. Cosmic rays from space penetrated the transparent glass tube and the fluorescent film and received by the discharge inducing ITO films activate free electrons moving in the glass tube and, at the same time, electrons emitted by the cup-shaped electrodes when a voltage is applied across the cup-shaped electrodes induces an electric discharge to make the cold-cathode fluorescent lamp light instantly.

Abstract: An information handling system inverter powers a display backlight at variable brightness levels determined by a brightness module integrated in the inverter. The brightness module sums a user interface setting, automated brightness setting and ambient light sensor measurement input into the inverter to determine the inverter power output, thus simplifying the integration of user brightness settings with automated brightness adjustments, such as DPST adjustments. A brightness range register holds maximum and minimum brightness settings for output by the brightness module. A calibration register holds a calibration brightness setting for calibration of display brightness.

Abstract: A soft start circuit generates a soft start voltage which changes over time when light emission of an EEFL is started. A pulse modulator receives a feedback voltage that corresponds to the output voltage of an inverter and the soft start voltage, and adjusts the duty ratio of a pulse signal PWM such that these two voltages match one another using a feedback operation. A striking control circuit monitors an error signal which is asserted when an abnormal state occurs. In a case in which the error signal has been asserted at a detection timing after the soft start voltage has reached a target voltage, the striking control circuit resets and restarts the soft start circuit. A driver controls the switching of the voltage at the primary coil of a transformer according to the pulse signal received from the pulse modulator.
