Abstract: A head and disk system for use in a disk drive that includes a slider having a surface that contacts the disk. This disk contacting surface of the slider is textured with pads, bumps, an etched surface or an otherwise roughened surface. The contact area of the disk has a greater roughness than a data zone. The head disk system exhibits acceptable stiction. Additionally, low glide avalanche over the CSS zone, thus enabling low fly height, is achieved.
Abstract: A magnetic head slider for sliding on the magnetic disk, which comprises: a leading edge; a trailing edge, wherein the air bearing surface has a front step bearing with submicron depth of the air bearing surface was made from said leading edge in the continuity, a rail surface made from this front step bearing in the continuity, a negative pressure recess which is more profound than said front step bearing made in the continuity from this rail surface and a side step bearing with the depth identical with said front step bearing made in the continuity from the rail surface, whereby the ratio of depth R of said recess and depth &dgr; s of said front step bearing is R/&dgr;s>5.
Abstract: A disk drive system includes a base, a disk stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. A ramp assembly includes a set of ramps for loading and unloading the sliders and transducing elements carried by the sliders to and from the disks in the disk stack. The ramp assembly is attached to the base. An actuator assembly is movably attached to the base of the disk drive. The actuator assembly includes one or more arms. A load spring is attached to the arm of the actuator. In some instances two load springs are attached to the arm of the actuator. A slider is attached to the load spring. Sliders have a backside surface and an air bearing surface. The air bearing surface includes an arrangement of rails and cavities which form high pressure areas and low pressure areas. An opening or passage connects the air bearing surface the backside surface of the slider. A ring of compliant material is attached to the backside surface of the slider.

Abstract: A magnetic head has a left side rail formed on a disk facing surface in a protruded manner, and a right side rail formed on the disk facing surface in a protruded manner. A cross rail formed on the disk facing surface protrudes and is elongated continuously to both the left side rail and the right side rail. A left air bearing surface is formed on the disk facing surface in a protruded manner, and formed only on a side of a leading edge continuously from the left side rail. The left air bearing surface has a continuous portion to the left side rail, and a right air bearing surface which is formed on the disk facing surface in a protruded manner, formed only on a side of the leading edge continuously from the right side rail.

Abstract: A first step portion is formed at a portion at which on an outer end portion of a facing surface of a surface of the slider meets the side panel of the slider. Furthermore, a second step portion is formed at the portion at which the outer end portion of the first step portion meets the side panel of the slider. An edge or the like due to machining occurs at an outer end portion of the second step portion. However, even if the magnetic head is steeply inclined, the outer end portion of the second step portion in which the edge or the like due to machining occurs is barely brought into contact with the recording medium because of the formation of the second step portion.
Abstract: An air bearing slider used with a thin film magnetic head is formed with a corner recess and a taper at the leading edge. The taper is disposed between the corner recess and one side of the slider. A central polygon-shaped recess is bounded by pads which are joined by a connecting section. In an alternative embodiment, a recess at the leading edge separates the taper into sections. In another embodiment, a second corner recess is provided at the leading edge and the taper is disposed between the first and second corner recesses. The shaped recesses and tapers improve the flying characteristics of the slider and enhance air bearing stiffness. A single etch process is used to form the recesses and side reliefs of the slider.

Abstract: A negative pressure air bearing type head slider is disclosed which is for use in a disk drive and has a head element mounted thereon for reading and writing data from and onto a disk. When loaded, this head slider generates a positive pressure and a negative pressure using inflow and outflow of air due to rotation of the disk, whereby the slider flies above the disk surface with a space therebetween. On the other hand, when the slider is unloaded and retreated from the disk surface, it has a sufficient flying height by virtue of its negative pressure minimizing structure.
