Motion Limiter Detail Patents (Class 360/245.7)
  • Patent number: 7583474
Abstract: In a suspension used in an actuator of a hard disk drive, a limiter mechanism is to be provided which produces little dust and which can restrict deformation of a gimbals even against a strong shock. According to one embodiment, when a weak shock is applied to the suspension, a limiter tab and a back side of a load beam come into contact with each other to prevent a gimbals from being largely deformed by the shock. Since deformation of the gimbals is restricted by surface contact of both load beam and limiter tab, the generation of dust is suppressed effectively. When a strong shock is applied to the suspension, the limiter tab is deformed and a projecting portion of a restrictive aperture and an end portion of a limiter tab aperture come into contact with each other. The projecting portion retains the limiter tab to restrict a further deformation of the gimbals.

Abstract: A disk drive suspension assembly employing an offset limiter for allowing bending of a flexure with respect to a load beam after joining the two. The assembly comprises a baseplate, a load beam and a flexure, the load beam including one or more engagement surfaces, and the flexure including a U-shaped limiter. The U-shaped limiter includes two substantially parallel legs and a distal end. The distal end includes a portion offset from the plane defined by the two legs. The offset portion increases the clearance between the distal end and the engagement surfaces and eliminates the interference therebetween during the bending of the U-shaped limiter.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention correct the static attitude of a head gimbal assembly (HGA) with high accuracy. In one embodiment, a vector group that constitutes the shortest path from the initial attitude of the HGA to the final anticipatory attitude is formed. The vector group is formed of the plural displacement vectors that give a variety of variations in static attitude when unit shots of laser light are performed on the HGA. Displacement vectors are synthesized while the displacement vectors each giving the anticipatory attitude closest to a target attitude are being selected in order from the initial attitude, toward the target attitude. Unit shots equivalent to the number of displacement vectors are performed on irradiating positions related to the displacement vectors included in the vector group. The static attitude existing after the unit shots is measured, then the displacement vectors are corrected, and a vector group constituting the new shortest path is formed.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention limit a pitch attitude angle of a magnetic head slider during loading without allowing gimbal stiffness of a flexure in an ordinary flying state to be increased. In one embodiment, a limiter formed by part of a flexure is disposed so as to provide a clearance from a lift tab formed by part of a load beam. A limiter clearance, if the clearance between the limiter and the lift tab is so called for convenience sake, must be maintained as a physical clearance when a magnetic head slider is in an ordinary flying state. The lift tab and the limiter are disposed on a side of an air inflow end of the magnetic head slider. The limiter clearance during unloading is thereby made small so as to allow proper and positive unloading operation.

The tab has a projecting shoulder spaced at a gap from the beam portion. The tongue free end outer terminus has an opening that interfits with the tab in tab shoulder engaging relation to block free end movement away from the locus beyond that permitted by the gap.

Abstract: A disk drive suspension and method has a limiter structure that limits movement of the tongue relative to a surrounding frame by extending the plastic film layer and optionally the metal layer components of a flexure-defining flexible circuit laminate beyond the flexure tongue distal end and attaching the terminal regions of the extended components to the surrounding frame laterally of the tongue. The flexure-defining laminate is attached to the suspension rigid portion proximally and optionally distally as well as laterally with the limiter structure. A lift tip can be used to enable lifting of the suspension and to stiffen the suspension in lieu of the distal attachment of the flexible circuit.

Abstract: An integrated suspension for a hard disk drive is formed as a single-piece flat assembly. The design eliminates the need for mechanical reinforcement such as flange forming, and requires no additional weld processing to form the functional portion of the assembly. A partial etch process is used to reduce local thicknesses in the gimbal and hinge areas to reduce the overall stiffness of the suspension. The proximal end structure of the suspension is also built by partial etching to achieve higher natural frequencies. The suspension design also incorporates built-in load/unload features and two-sided, opposite-facing limiters to limit excessive slider displacement during the manufacturing process, loading/unloading, and non-operational shock environments.

Abstract: The integrated lead suspension assembly comprises several improvements. An oversized terminating pad for the electrical traces and a smaller adjacent insulation layer on the flexure assembly enable laser solder ball bonding of the pads to the read/write terminal contacts on the slider without clamping operation. Consequently, the tip of the load beam can be made narrow for a structure that provides for head loading and unloading functions, which improves the dynamic performance of the suspension assembly. The flexure assembly is configured such that it requires no permanent bending in its forming process, and any permanent bending required is done to the load beam. The limiter that limits the travel of the flexure assembly is formed on the load beam and it is bent to the functional position only after attachment of the flexure assembly to the load beam.
