Patent number: 10002039Abstract: An aspect includes identifying a set of components of a storage system and determining dependencies among constituent components in the set of components. At least one of the components' ability to function is dependent on at least one other of the components' ability to function. The set of components includes at least one data storage component and at least one computation component configured to operate within at least one datacenter. An aspect also includes identifying a size, strength, and storage placement scheme of the storage system; simulating operation of the storage system based on the identified size, strength, and storage placement scheme; and determining a mean time between loss event from the simulated operation. The mean time between loss event factors in the dependencies among the constituent components. Patent number: 7904645Abstract: Formatting disk drive data using format field elements (FFEs). A processing module (which can be a general purpose processor or a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) processor) is employed to generate FFEs that are employed to govern operation of the various data formatting modules within a formatting system within a HDD. The determination of when a data formatting module stops operating in accordance with a first FFE and begins operating in accordance with a second FFE can be a predetermined period of time, a number of operations being performed, the meeting of some condition, or some other means. Each FFE can be viewed as being a multi-dimensional instruction that not only includes a configuration for a data formatting module, but also includes the conditions by which the configuration is to be governed by a subsequent FFE, among other things.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2008Date of Patent: March 8, 2011Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: John P. Patent number: 5867340Abstract: Disclosed is a rigid disk drive information storage device which includes a rigid disk having an outside diameter in the range of about 33-34 mm., with a housing having a footprint that includes a width of about 35 mm. and utilizing a rotary actuator for positioning read/write recording elements across the surface of the disk. The disk storage devices further includes a footprint with length of about 50.8 mm., and includes in one embodiment dynamic head loading apparatus for loading the read/write recording elements into operative relationship with the disk. In another embodiment the rigid disk drive utilizes contact start stop loading and unloading of the read/write recording elements. An inertial latch is also provided for preventing rotation of the actuator when the drive is subjected to a rotational force.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1997Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: Mobile Storage Technology Inc.Inventors: James H. Morehouse, Thomas L. Andrews, Jr., Gary E. Counts, Steven B. Volk, Michael R. Utenick, Stephen R. Cowen, Richard K. Thompson

Patent number: 5293282Abstract: A multiple actuator disk drive utilizes multiple heads, associated with respective ones of multiple actuators, to read data from and write data to all tracks on the surface of a disk. The positioning of each head by the respective actuator is controlled by embedded servo-information recorded in the data tracks. The data tracks have a density of greater than 2000 tracks per inch. Utilizing two actuators provides access times which are reduced with respect to the access times provided by disk drives having a single actuator and an increased data transfer rate.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1990Date of Patent: March 8, 1994Assignee: Conner Peripherals, Inc.Inventors: John P. Squires, Glade N. Bagnell, Charles M. Sander, Kurt M. Anderson

Patent number: 5251082Abstract: A disk/file for magnetic recording having overall dimensions of one quarter inch thick by about the size of a standard credit card with pin connectors for connecting into a receptacle such as for pc boards. The file features a rotor mounted on the rims of two disk and a stator external to and coplanar with the disks. An actuator features a "wobble" disk rolling around the inside of a nest of electromagnets and turning a small increment with each excursion around the nest thereby turning the shaft of the head support to actuate the head from track to track. The head support arm includes two sections hinged together and engaged with a third link that orients the head to eliminate head skew. A magnet withdraws the head devices from the disk surface to avoid sticktion when the disks are stationary. The head devices feature thin film cores that are oriented flat to the surface of the disk.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1991Date of Patent: October 5, 1993Inventors: Timothy J. Elliott, Robert W. Herman, William L. Cooper, Robert S. Smith
