  • Patent number: 8922943
Abstract: In a fluid dynamic bearing apparatus, an oil buffer is defined between a thrust gap and a pumping gap. The oil buffer has an axial dimension greater than that of the thrust gap, and/or has a radial dimension greater than that of the pumping gap. An air bubble generated in the thrust gap due to cavitation, for example, when a fluid dynamic bearing apparatus experiences a vibration can be dissolved in lubricating oil provided within the oil buffer. This prevents leakage of the lubricating oil due to the air bubble residing in the fluid dynamic bearing apparatus.

Abstract: Approaches for a magnetic write head having an adjacent coil architecture, wherein a coil turn is fabricated immediately adjacent to the writer main pole. The adjacent portion essentially lies on the main pole, except for a very thin layer of insulation atomically layered in between. The adjacent coil portion is also substantially closer o the wrap-around shield in comparison with conventional coil configurations. Further, the other upper coil portions may be fabricated to essentially lie on the stitch pole, again except for a very thin atomic layer deposited layer of insulation layered between. This adjacent coil configuration provides a writer coil configuration that concentrates the coil structure significantly closer to the main pole surface, as well as concentrates more of the coil structure closer to the main pole tip, providing for a more efficient and faster write head.

  • Patent number: 8867166
Abstract: A spindle motor includes a flat stator, a rotor magnet arranged above the stator, and a magnetic portion made of a ferromagnetic material. The magnetic portion is positioned lower than the stator and the magnetic portion are axially overlapped with coils. A magnetic attraction force is generated between the magnetic portion and the rotor magnet. Since the magnetic portion is positioned lower than the stator, it is possible to cause magnetic fluxes to efficiently flow between the rotor magnet and the stator. Further, the stator includes a protrusion protruded radially outward beyond an outer circumferential portion of a rotor hub. Accordingly, in a plan view, the stator is positioned radially outward of the rotor hub.
