Abstract: A lightning strike protection system for protecting composite structures, an improved lightning strike appliqué (LSA) for such a lightning strike protection system, and a method of protecting composite structures, such as an aircraft fuselage. The LSA is electrically connected to adjacent conductive surfaces, e.g., by a fuzz button or a wire bond inserted in the bottom of the LSA. An adjacent conductive surface may be another LSA, a lightning diverter overlay, or a current return network. Charge, e.g., from a lightning strike to the LSA, flows to the conductive layer through the electrical connector.

  • Patent number: 7796370
Abstract: A lightning protection device is provided. The device includes a lower field coupler, an upper field coupler, a lightning sensor, and a controller. The lightning sensor includes a differential voltage window comparator. The lower field coupler is capacitively coupled to the earth ground, and the upper field coupler is coupled to the local atmospheric electric field. If a ground potential rise (GPR) event occurs, the differential voltage window comparator trips. If the differential voltage window comparator trips or if a power line transient occurs, the controller disconnects the power phase, neutral, and ground wires to isolate sensitive equipment. In some embodiments, the controller also detects power line transients and disconnects the power, phase, neutral, and ground wires if a power line transient is detected.

Abstract: A joint on an aircraft, a bonding lead for use in such a joint, and a method of manufacturing such a joint. The bonding lead comprises an elongate conductive core with a pair of end faces at the extremities of its length. The conductive core is encapsulated along at least a majority of its length and at both end faces in a barrier layer typically formed from an elastomer. The lead is encapsulated along its length in the barrier layer apart from at a first contact region towards a first end of the bonding lead and a second contact region towards a second end of the bonding lead.

Abstract: A joint on an aircraft, the joint comprising: a first component; a second component; and a bonding lead which provides an electrical pathway between the first and second components. The bonding lead comprises a conductive core and a sheath which covers a substantial length of the core and has a lower electrical conductivity than the core. The path of least electrical resistance between the first component and the core of the bonding lead comprises the sheath, typically with an electrical resistance between 50 k? and 50 M?. By making the electrical resistance of the core much smaller than that of the sheath, the total resistance of the bonding lead remains substantially the same regardless of its length.

Abstract: A joint on an aircraft, the joint comprising: a first component; a second component joined to the first component; and a bonding lead which forms an electrical connection between the components with a resistance between 100 k? and 10 M?. Surprisingly, it has been found that a bonding lead with a relatively high resistance can be used without seriously compromising the static discharge performance of the bonding lead, and that the resulting comparatively low flow of current reduces the risk of sparking in the event of an lightning strike. Bonding leads may be provided as a kit of parts in which at least two of the bonding leads have different lengths and the longer lead is formed from a material having a higher bulk conductivity than the shorter lead. Thus the bonding leads can be made with approximately similar resistances regardless of their lengths.

Abstract: One embodiment of a device for improving fuel efficiency of an automobile engine having a plurality of firing cylinders with a plurality of firing caps may include a discharging circuit. The discharging circuit may have an input terminal capable of being electrically coupled to the plurality of firing caps and configured to receive excess energy from the automobile engine. The discharging circuit may also have one or more output terminals capable of being electrically coupled to ground. The discharging unit may be capable of controllably discharging the excess energy into the ground through the output terminal, and the discharge of the excess energy into the ground may prevent accumulation of the excess energy in the automobile engine, thereby improving the fuel efficiency of the automobile engine.

Abstract: The subject invention pertains to a method and apparatus for lightning protection for a vessel or structure operated on a fluid such as water. In a specific embodiment of the subject invention, a sailboat mast or lightning rod serves to collect the lightning charge and a flexible conductive wire is attached to the mast or lightning rod which goes down over the side of the vessel and to the water level. A grounding electrode is at the end of the wire and has a buoyant material on or near the grounding electrode such that the grounding electrode is substantially kept at the surface of the water. The grounding electrode and buoyancy may also serve to allow the grounding electrode to hydrodynamic plane at the water surface if the vessel or structure is moving through the water.
