Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for reducing ambient light reflections from a surface of a display device in a power efficient manner. The display device includes a reflecting circular polarizer (RCP) and an absorbing circular polarizer (ACP) having the same polarity. The RCP provides light recycling functionality, while the ACP provides ambient light reflection suppression. In some implementations, the light generated by the display device is polarized by the RCP before it is incident on the ACP, which is located at the front of the display device. Because the polarities of the RCP and the ACP are the same, the ACP substantially passes all of the incident polarized light towards the front of the display device.

Abstract: Image projection illumination apparatus and methods are provided. A color wheel has a blue laser light reflecting region and other regions respectively coated with different color light emitting phosphors. Blue laser light of a given polarization is directed by reflection or transmission by a blue laser light polarization selective filter through a polarization changing element with changed polarization onto the color wheel. When the color wheel reflecting region is aligned with the incident light, incident light is reflected back through the polarization changing element with further changed polarization by the other of reflection or transmission by the filter for image projection. When the other regions are respectively aligned with the incident light, the different color light is emitted by the phosphors along the light path for image projection.

Abstract: An electronic device display may have an organic light-emitting diode layer that emits light to form images for a user. Reflective structures such as metal signal lines may be present in the organic light-emitting diode layer. Ambient light reflections from the metal signal lines may be suppressed using a circular polarizer on the organic light-emitting diode layer. To increase light emission efficiency from the organic light-emitting diode display layer under low ambient light conditions in which ambient light reflections are not significant, the polarization efficiency of the circular polarizer may be reduced. Control circuitry may make measurements of ambient light intensity using an ambient light sensor and can control the polarization efficiency of the circular polarizer accordingly by applying adjustable amounts of light or electric field. Polarization efficiency may also be adjusted using a photosensitive polarizer material that responds directly to changes in ambient light level.

Abstract: The present invention provides an illuminating device that makes it possible to reduce the number of members for regulating a polarization state and can irradiate light having natural color shades without decreasing energy efficiency of light irradiation, and a plant growth regulation method using the illuminating device. The illuminating device of the present invention includes a light-emitting light source and a polarization state regulation member that regulates a polarization state of the light-emitting light source, in which the polarization state of a wavelength region of a portion of emission wavelengths is changed to circular polarization, and a degree of circular polarization of light in a wavelength band for regulation among the light rays to be irradiated is 0.3 or higher. In a preferable embodiment, a width of at least one wavelength band for regulation of the polarization state regulation member is from 60 nm to 250 nm.

Abstract: A reflective polarizer of the invention has excellent optical properties even though a very small number of polymer components per unit area is disposed inside a matrix thereof compared to reflective polarizers of the related art, which include birefringent polymer, since the polymer inside the matrix has a plate-like shape. This is advantageous for covering the entire range of visible light, since a plate-like polymer having a variety of optical thicknesses can be used. The additional processing of bonding the skin layer is not performed, since the skin layer is formed on at least one surface of the core layer in the state in which it is molten. This can greatly reduce manufacturing costs, and is advantageous in that it maximizes optical properties in a limited thickness.

The polarization conversion element has a p/s-polarizing beam splitter film to separate polarization components of incident light into p-polarization component and s-polarization component. The fluorescent substance emits visible light as the incident light that is incident on the p/s-polarizing beam splitter film, which visible light is generated by that the fluorescent substance is excited by excitation light, and has a wavelength of longer wavelength region than a wavelength of the excitation light. The light source element emits a laser beam having a predetermined wavelength as the excitation light to irradiate the fluorescent substance with the excitation light so that a laser beam having a polarization plane between the polarization plane of p-polarized light and the polarization plane of s-polarized light exiting from the fluorescent substance is emitted as the incident light.
