  • Patent number: 8081588
Abstract: A mobile communication device has a wireless transceiver and one or more processors for communicating data in a wireless communication system. The one or more processors are operative to receive a plurality of data packets of varying payload size in a queue; associate one or more of the data packets from the queue into a group, such that a total size of the group is at or near a maximum transmissible unit (MTU) size of a data frame; cause the one or more data packets associated into the group to be formatted into the data frame for data transmission via the wireless transceiver; and repeat, for a plurality of data frames, the associating and formatting, for communicating the data via the wireless transceiver in the wireless communication system. By associating the data packets into groups having the MTU size, data throughput of the data transmission is increased.

  • Patent number: 8081597
Abstract: Aspects of the invention include a root node of a wireless communication infrastructure that buffers data packets for transmission by base stations over an air interface. The root node determines a time delay for transmission of a data packet from the root node to each base station, a maximum time delay of those time delays, and a timing latency based upon the maximum time delay. The root node transmits the timing latency to the base stations. In response, each base station initiates transmission of data packets received by the root node after expiration of the timing latency. Alternatively, the root node, instead of the base stations, may buffer the data packets, and transmit them so that they arrive at the base stations at substantially the same time.

  • Patent number: 8001545
Abstract: A methodology for using multiple execution threads to regulate message traffic is presented. An application thread spawns a limiter thread, and each have access in shared memory to a message count that reflects a number of messages that are transmitted by the application thread within a regulated time period. The limiter thread cycles by entering a sleep state for the regulated time period, resetting the message count upon awakening, and then reentering a sleep state. The application thread executes a loop that compares the message count against a maximum number of messages for the regulated time period; if the comparison is favorable, then another message is transmitted and the message count is adjusted. If the comparison is not favorable, then the application thread enters a sleep state; after awakening, it repeats the comparison, and depending on the result, it transmits a message or reenters a sleep state.

  • Patent number: 7992208
Abstract: An estimate of a portion of network traffic that is nonconforming to a communication transmission control protocol is used to signal that a distributed denial of service attack may be occurring. Traffic flows are aggregated and packets are intentionally dropped from the flow aggregate in accordance with an assigned perturbation signature. The flow aggregates are observed to determine if the rate of arrival of packets that have a one-to-one transmission correspondence with the dropped packets are similarly responsive to the perturbation signature. By assigning orthogonal perturbation signatures to different routers, multiple routers may perform the test on the aggregate and the results of the test will be correctly ascertained at each router. Nonconforming aggregates may be redefined to finer granularity to determine the node on the network that is under attack, which may then take mitigating action.

Abstract: A technique for controlling data transmission over a connection employing congestion control is provided. The technique comprises two basic aspects: Detecting a decrease of Round Trip Time in respect of the connection, wherein the detection is facilitated by comparing a short-term Round Trip Time average with a long-term Round Trip Time average (302); and, in response to a result of the detection, adjusting the congestion control so as to increase the data transmission rate (304). Particularly, adjusting the congestion control includes enabling a data transmission rate that is (even) higher than what would have been allowed by any conventional, congestion control. In effect, the present technique may ‘push’ the conventional congestion control when it is not increasing the data transmission rate fast enough.

In a second embodiment, a policer machine utilizes the well known token bucket technique to implement traffic control. In both embodiments, a random dimension is added to the rate threshold used by each policer algorithm. For the sliding window embodiment, the effect of randomization of the rate threshold is that the policer machine applies a scattering of rate values centered around the desired rate to the incoming traffic. For the token bucket embodiment, a random dimension is added to the empty bucket (i.e. zero tokens) threshold.

  • Patent number: 7870380
Abstract: The disclosed system and method allow secure packet transmission to be provided with a minimum amount of overhead and to employ a cache having copies distributed among a plurality of different locations. SSL/TLS session information for a session with each of the proxy servers is stored in the cache so that it is accessible to at least one other proxy server. Using this arrangement, when a client computer switches from a connection with a first proxy server to a connection with a second proxy server, the second proxy server can retrieve SSL/TLS session information from the cache corresponding to the SSL/TLS communication session between the client device and the first proxy server. The second proxy server can then use the retrieved SSL/TLS session information to accept a session with the client device.

  • Patent number: 7852766
Abstract: Communication quality values such as delay times of packets transmitted and received within a packet network are measured, and a threshold value is calculated based on the measured communication quality values. Further, a management reference value is calculated based on the communication quality values of packets whose measured communication quality values are within a range based on the threshold value. A communication state is detected by comparing the measured communication quality values with the management reference value.

  • Patent number: 7848343
Abstract: Techniques are described for managing traffic flow to an optical network terminal (ONT) on a passive optical network (PON) to prevent an individual ONT from being overrun. Specifically, the techniques involve reducing a transmission rate of a unique traffic flow and selectively denying access to a common traffic flow. By reducing the transmission rate of the unique traffic flow, sufficient bandwidth may be released to receive the unique traffic flow and the common traffic flow without overflowing the ONT. For example, the ONT or, alternatively, the OLT may send the requested common traffic flow without reducing the transmission rate of the unique traffic flow when sufficient bandwidth is available, send the common traffic flow but reduce the transmission rate of unique traffic flow by an appropriate amount, or deny access to the common traffic flow altogether without reducing the transmission rate of the unique traffic flow.

  • Patent number: 7843813
Abstract: Apparatus are provided for managing hierarchically organized subscriber profiles. According to one embodiment, a router includes multiple virtual interfaces and a policy engine. The virtual interfaces define connections between the router and corresponding subscribers of a service provider. A first virtual interface is operable to receive packets from a first subscriber and to process the packets in accordance with a first-level profile identifier. The policy engine is coupled with the virtual interfaces and operable to de-reference subscriber profiles of the subscribers on behalf of the virtual interfaces based on a database of hierarchically organized profile identifiers.

  • Patent number: 7830787
Abstract: A multicast transmission scheme is introduced. A multicast data stream is sent on a default tunnel and switched to a data tunnel during flooding conditions. The default tunnel is a point-to-multipoint tunnel from, for example, a source provider edge router to all other provider edge routers in a virtual private network. The data tunnel is a point-to-multipoint tunnel from, for example, a source provider edge router to other provider edge routers that have recipients. Flooding conditions can occur when sending the multicast data stream on the default tunnel, for example, when a specified bandwidth threshold has been exceeded on a source provider edge router. Additionally, the data tunnel is created by selecting a multicast distribution tunnel group from a configured pool of addresses, advertising the group, receiving data joins from, for example, provider edge routers with recipients, and waiting a specified send time.
