Abstract: An embodiment of the invention provides a method for providing power to a USB client device and polling for a correct protocol. A USB host device provides power and a first part of a first handshake determined by a first protocol. The host then monitors the client for a second part of the first handshake. When the second part of the first handshake is detected by the host, the client recognizes that power may be applied according to the first protocol. When the second part of the first handshake is not presented by the client device, the host provides a first part of a second handshake according to a second protocol. When the second part of the second handshake is provided by the client, the host the client recognizes that power may be applied according to the second protocol.

  • Patent number: 8873478
Abstract: The equipment and techniques disclosed herein introduce a deferred acknowledgement (DACK), in the context of a protocol for a wireless station to request and obtain access to a wireless network resource for communication of one or more data packets. Essentially, a network node, such as a wireless base station, sends the DACK instruction in response to the access request telling the requesting station that the node has heard the request but that the requesting station should defer its transmission. The requesting station need not back off and re-initiate its access request. Instead, the requesting station waits for a later acknowledgement (ACK) granting access to a resource as requested. Although the DACK provides additional signaling, this technique can still utilize a fast ACK type message, that is to say a relatively short signaling packet.

  • Patent number: 8843151
Abstract: Burst quality of service (QoS) mode uses a higher modulation rate and coding scheme for transmitting data blocks in a short period of time between a transmitting terminal and a user terminal experiencing a channel state above a certain threshold in a wireless communication system. Burst QoS may reduce data transmission time, thereby achieving a higher level of channel efficiency as well as a reduction in the consumption of power. In burst QoS mode, the channel state information (CSI) may be repeatedly measured. When the CSI is above a certain threshold, a higher rate modulation and coding (MC) scheme is used for burst data transmission. After the burst, a short sleep is triggered to reduce power consumption.

  • Patent number: 8824386
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for grouping the multiple stations connected to an access point (AP). The system and method comprise sending a sounding packet to a plurality of stations, wherein the stations may be all or part of the stations that are located within the range of the AP. The stations that receive the sounding packets respond to the AP, and the AP determines the channel state information (CSI) from the responses. According to the CSI, the AP divides the multiple stations into several groups. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a confirmation step is performed to each group of stations, respectively. The AP sends a second sounding packet to each group of stations, and verifies the CSI between each station group by group. Therefore, the method and system provides for monitoring the validation of each group by periodically sending sounding packets to each group.

  • Patent number: 8694016
Abstract: Systems, methods, device and apparatus are provided that allocate broadcast delivery capacity based oil popularity measurements associated with broadcasted data objects. By allocating broadcast delivery capacity based on popularity measurements, Quality of Service (QoS) perception can be improved by decreasing the number of reception failures, decreasing the data object access delay and/or decreasing the consumption of wireless device resources, such as battery power and processing capabilities.

  • Patent number: 8687495
Abstract: A data packet communication system employs radio link control (RLC) transmission between a transmitter and a receiver with an Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) arrangement whereby polling of the receiver is accomplished with reduced amount of redundantly transmitted data, such as between an access node and terminal. Upon a polling event, such as emptying of a transmission buffer of the transmitter, expiration of a polling timer, or reaching a radio link control (RLC) protocol data units (PDUs) count threshold, the transmitter sends a polling command to the receiver. This polling command is smaller than any of the RLC PDUs by resegmenting to a variably sized PDU sending a reduced amount of data. With evolving communication standards tending toward larger PDUs, such as in excess of a kilobyte for HSPA+ (High-Speed Packet Access Evolution) and 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution), this inefficiency can be of increasing impact.

  • Publication number: 20140086232
Abstract: In a method for estimating a channel at a receiver in a wireless communications network, the receiver obtains channel model parameters for a received signal based on raw channel estimates for the received signal, where each raw channel estimate corresponds to an antenna at the receiver. The receiver combines, for each of a plurality of contiguous subcarriers in the wireless communications network, the channel model parameters to generate a first plurality of combined channel model parameters. The receiver then chooses a first set of indices corresponding to combined channel model parameters from among the first plurality of combined channel model parameters having magnitudes passing a combined channel model parameter threshold. The receiver then estimates the channel in a sparse domain based on the first set of indices.

  • Patent number: 8665847
Abstract: Embodiments enable prioritization and selection of network access points (NAP) by a computing device using NAP attribute values. The computing device obtains the attribute values based on a location of the computing device and/or proximate NAPs detected by the computing device. The obtained attribute values are compared to a state of the computing device (e.g., sensor values), user preferences, or other criteria to select at least one of the NAPs for connection with the computing device. In some embodiments, a user of the computing device is presented with a list of Wi-Fi access points ranked according to relevance to the computing device and/or user.

  • Patent number: 8644269
Abstract: A network includes an access point using a first protocol and a station using both the first protocol and a second protocol. The station uses the first protocol before a first threshold and a second protocol after the first threshold. A first duration between the second threshold and the first threshold is at least of sufficient length for the station to receive one data packet from the access point and send an acknowledgment. The station transmits to the access point a current clear-to-send packet at a current time during a current exchange based on success or failure of a previous exchange during which a previous clear-to-send packet was transmitted to the access point at a previous time.
