Abstract: Techniques are provided for sequencing user data packets (e.g., voice packets) segmented into plural AAL2 packets which are in turn carried over Internet Protocol (IP). Concerning segmented user data packets, the techniques of the present invention utilize one or more predetermined values in the length indicator (LI) field in the headers of the certain ones of the plural AAL2 packets to carry information other than packet size information. Further, the techniques of the present invention use the User-to-User indicator (UUI) field of the AAL2 packets to carry AAL2 information such as segmentation notification and sequence-derivable information. For AAL2 packets which carry non-segmented user data packets (e.g., user data packets which can fit with the maximum size of a single AAL2 packet), the length indicator (LI) field contains the actual length of the AAL2 packet in conventional manner.

  • Patent number: 7068664
Abstract: In a voice interception system, a voice is intercepted by applying a function of a vocoder installed in a voice signal processor to a mobile switching station. This interception implies a conversion between an ATM cell of an AAL2pf, an AAL2, and an AAL1 (PCM), and a conversion between an ATM cell of an AAL2pf and an AAL1 (TFO) in a TFO case. The ATM cell of the AAL2 in the ATM network is picked up from an ATM switch and is intercepted. If a voice TFO CODEC method is used, the above functions are applied to a voice monitor and a voice signal, during a telephone call between mobile stations, is intercepted. It is possible with the disclosed invention to carry out a voice interception only by controlling the ATM switch without individual control of both the ATM switch and an STM switch.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for providing voice communication over a packetized network in which quality of service is guaranteed for voice communications. The method involves identifying reserved paths within the network, such as multi-protocol label switching paths. When a call is made, the identified reserved paths are evaluated to determine whether each contains sufficient bandwidth for the requested voice communication. The effective bandwidth for the call is estimated based on the codec used for the call, the service class parameter set from the caller's user profile, the time of day, and other parameters. A priority parameter is set for the requested voice communication, which may be based on the service class parameter, and is mapped to a specific Differentiated Service Code Point (DSCP) and 802.1p service class parameter. If the reserved path is determined to contain sufficient bandwidth, the requested voice communication is transmitted over the reserved path at the set priority.

According to the invention, the sequence of data to be encoded at a transmitting end is split into at least two blocks, if the sequence is longer than a first predetermined length M. The splitting is performed so that the length first block is equal to the first predetermined length M. If the remaining sequence is shorter than a second predetermined length N, the second block comprises all of the remaining sequence. If the remaining sequence is longer than the second predetermined length N, the length of the second block is found by subtracting from the length of the remaining sequence the highest integer multiple of the second predetermined length, and the rest of the sequence is split into blocks of length N. If the sequence is shorter than the first predetermined length M, only one block is produced, and the sequence is padded with dummy values to form a sequence of length M.

  • Patent number: 6763025
Abstract: A packet switch router that processes downstream digital information to provide dedicated bandwidth to each subscriber destination in a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network. The router includes a network module that terminates a network connection, a switch that forwards data from the network module, and a channel module. The channel module includes a switch interface, a cell processing engine, one or more modulators, and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter network. The switch interface forwards packetized data from the switch to the cell processing engine. The cell processing engine organizes the packetized data into multiple data streams, encapsulates data in each data stream into data cells, and multiplexes the data cells into a multiplexed cell stream. Each modulator is configured to modulate a multiplexed cell stream into an analog signal. The RF transmitter network up converts and combines a plurality of analog signals into a combined electrical signal for transmission.

  • Patent number: 6760335
Abstract: AAL2 (ATM Adaptation Layer 2) paths are dynamically established and/or released in an ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network/system. For purposes of example, during network operation a determination(s) may be made as to whether AAL2 mux (i.e., multiplexor(s) and/or demultiplexor(s)) resources are lacking and/or excessive relating to a particular AAL2 signaling relation(s). When AAL2 mux resources are determined as lacking for the AAL2 signaling relation, then at least one AAL2 mux is added to the relation. However, when AAL2 mux resources are determined as excessive for the AAL2 signaling relation, then at least one AAL2 mux is removed or dropped from the relation. AAL2 paths may be selectively and dynamically added and/or dropped from an AAL2 signaling relation in response to the above determinations. In such a manner, ATM resources can be preserved and not wasted thereby resulting in a more efficient ATM AAL2 system/network.

  • Patent number: 6754239
Abstract: A multiplexing apparatus and method, a transmitting apparatus and method, and a recording medium arranged to prevent a delay of one of multiplexing scheduling processing and multiplexing processing in accordance with a schedule obtained by the multiplexing scheduling processing from influencing the other of these processings. A scheduler calculates schedule information on the basis of access unit information from an encoder and stores the calculated schedule information by supplying it to an intermediate buffer. If some additional data is to be multiplexed, the scheduler also calculates the additional data and stores the calculated additional data by supplying it to an intermediate buffer. A bit stream multiplexer reads out schedule information from the schedule information intermediate buffer, selects data designated by the schedule information from an elementary stream from the encoder and from additional data stored in the additional data intermediate buffer, and outputs the data as a multiplexed stream.

  • Patent number: 6747977
Abstract: To obviate inefficient use of bandwidth in a packetised system, such as a broadband ATM domain, the use or amount of header information sent in relation to a channel is restricted by one of two principal mechanisms, as exemplified in FIGS. 3 and 4. First, control information incident to a packet interface (20) is interrogated by a processor (21) to determine (50) packet length requirements. A packet length indicator is then generated (52) for inclusion within a header (44) of a packet. Alternatively, a frame (30) is pre-partitioned (60) into several packets (32-42) having different lengths. An addressed subscriber unit (28) is allocated (64) a particular channel, i.e. at least one particular packet within the frame (30), based on data throughput requirements (62), whereby the location of the packet within the frame inherently identifies the length of the packet. Optionally, the data rate used within that packet may also be identified inherently by the location of the packet within the frame (30).

Abstract: A plurality of bridges accommodating LANs are connected through an ATM network in a network system of the present invention. When a specified bridge is newly connected to this ATM network, the specified bridge transmits a request for setting point-to-multipoint transmission SVCs towards other bridges. These other bridges, when receiving the setting request from the specified bridge, execute a process of setting the point-to-multipoint transmission SVCs with respect to the specified bridge.

  • Patent number: 6738372
Abstract: This invention presents an apparatus for composing an ATM wrapper transmission block capable of handling plural pieces of program information transmitted in SDTI or IP packet commonly by a low overhead. Since the ATM wrapper transmission block conforms to both AAL1 system and AAL5 system, sequential connection is possible by changing over the AAL1 transmission and AAL5 transmission in the ATM wrapper layer. Further, by the AAL5 system, live transmission output of minimum transmission delay, and contribution output free from error can be issued at the same time, and therefore the error is corrected by referring to the reception data in the former, and the error is corrected by re-sending the error position data in the latter.

  • Patent number: 6728272
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided to transport private line traffic over an ATM network. A first plurality of TDM private line traffic links, such as T1 or E1 circuits, are multiplexed to create a first rt-VBR virtual circuit such that the bandwidth of the first rt-VBR virtual circuit is not limited. A second plurality of TDM private line circuits are multiplexed to create a second rt-VBR virtual circuit such that the bandwidth of the second rt-VBR virtual circuit is not limited. This may be done by AAL2 multiplexing with substantially large SCR, PCR and MBS values and the removal of T1 frames that do not contain data (that is, frames that contain only frame delimiters). The first and second rt-VBR virtual circuits are combined for transport over a link in the ATM network. An overload control process may be performed based on the ATM network link utilization.

  • Patent number: 6717948
Abstract: A knowledge-based connection admission method is disclosed for efficient multiplexing of data and speech over AAL2. The method uses a knowledge-based technique to decide when and what type of data traffic will be multiplexed with speech traffic in ATM Adaptation Layer 2 (AAL2) environment. The knowledge-based connection technique supports low bit rate and delay sensitive applications such as mobile telephony in an ATM environment by maximizing the use of available bandwidth. The method includes monitoring ATM cells for a AAL2 connection, determining whether the ATM cells contain unused bytes and multiplexing data traffic with speech traffic on the AAL2 connection when the data meets a predetermined set of requirements.
