  • Patent number: 7075937
Abstract: This method applies to the transmission of information during a communication session, on a network having at least one switch, over at least one path between a so-called “source” node and a so-called “destination” node. The network is adapted to transmit data according to at least one connected mode and at least one non-connected mode. The session includes the transmission of at least one packet including on the one hand “user” data and on the other hand additional data defining notably the path on the said network which the said user data will follow. Each time a packet is received, the destination node performs: an operation of reading the said additional data (601), and an operation of determining the transmission mode (602), connected or non-connected, taking into account at least some of the said additional data.

  • Patent number: 6823219
Abstract: An architecture for use in controlling and managing optical functions and optical devices. A common microprocessor based control layer coordinates commands between optical devices and a user station. The control layer executes an operating system which handles data flow in the control layer. Generic commands from the user station causes the operating system to call specific subroutines the produce digital commands. These digital commands are then passed to a digital layer that interfaces with an analog layer. The analog layer is specifically developed to interface and work with a specific optical device. The analog layer thus directly controls the optical device including changing its settings based on input from the digital layer.

Abstract: An ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) bridge device is provided which is capable of removing unwanted ATM network traffic transmitted by a loop packet, of avoiding confusion of a layer 2 network caused by occurrence of erroneous learning, of rapidly identifying a point where a loop has been formed, and of preventing simultaneous formation of loops among a plurality of points caused by loop setting in a plurality of interfaces. The ATM bridge device has functions of learning a MAC (Media Access Control) address of a packet transmitted from the ATM bridge device, of filtering and monitoring a MAC address of a packet input from an ATM network and judges, when receiving a packet output from the ATM bridge device, the input packet as a loop-back packet to scrap the packet and to notify an upper network layer of the loop-back packet.

  • Patent number: 6711126
Abstract: The invention concerns a method of managing data packets originating from data frames, the packets being presented to buffer (40) prior to processing. When a packet corresponding to the start of a frame is presented to the buffer stage, it is determined whether the filling level of the buffer (40) exceeds a first predetermined filling threshold (42) corresponding to a state of congestion and, if such is the case, this packet and all packets belonging to that same frame are systematically discarded before the buffer. The frames can e.g. originate from AAL2 connections, and each constitute a respective ATMS adaptation layer service data unit (AAL2 SDU), in which case the packets are common part sublayer (CPS) packets, and the buffer (40) stores the CPS packets before the latter are multiplexed into asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells. The invention also relates to an apparatus for implementing the above method.

Abstract: Traffic on a connectionless (CL) network, such as IP packets, can be routed onto a connection a connection oriented (CO) network, such as an ATM telephony network, when it is advantageous to do so from a user or service provider viewpoint, without affecting the ability of users to continue to use existing applications. Routing is controlled by nodes called CL-CO gateways, with connectivity to both the CL network and the Co network. When CL traffic originating at a source reached these gateway nodes, a decision is made whether to continue carrying the information in the CL mode, or to redirect the traffic to a CO network.

Abstract: A connectionless communications network includes a number of low earth orbit (LEO) satellite nodes. Motion of the satellites constantly changes the topology of the network. A virtual model of the network having fixed virtual nodes, is maintained in a connection control system. This virtual model is used to control the route that traffic will take through the real network. As topology changes happen in the network then the virtual nodes of the model become embodied by different real nodes and communicate their virtual identity to connected nodes. Routing of the traffic is performed with reference to the virtual network so that routing follows the current embodiment of the virtual network.

  • Patent number: 6574795
Abstract: An information delivery system includes receiving platforms to receive data communicated from a transmitting source according to a unidirectional transfer protocol over a link. At least some receiving platforms process the received data to determine if a portion of expected data is missing. If so, a receiving platform is able to generate and send a request for the missing data according to a supplemental protocol that is separate from the unidirectional transfer protocol. The transmitting source is able to receive the request for missing data and to retransmit the missing data. The data may include ancillary information (e.g., enhancement data) associated with audio/video content (e.g., television content). By adding the supplemental protocol to enable requests for missing data, a unidirectional transfer protocol that is not reliable is made reliable as a mechanism is provided to ensure receipt of the transmitted data.
