  • Patent number: 7050440
Abstract: The present invention relates to switching in electronic networks. Many data transmission protocols and technologies used in such networks, such as TCP/IP and Ethernet, use variable-length packets for transmission. Often however, the nodes that make up these networks typically contain high-speed cell switches that only support fixed-size data units. To support variable-length packets in such a fixed-size cell switch non-interleaving switching and transmission must be offered. The present invention provides such a solution in essence by segmenting a variable-length frame into a plurality of fixed-length cells including a start-of-frame cell, one or more continuation cell(s), and an end-of-frame cell and routes said fixed-length cells through said switch, thereby providing, at an output of said switch, subsequent and deadlock-free transmission of consecutive cells of a certain frame, and block any cell of a different frame from interleaving.

  • Patent number: 7009981
Abstract: A status queue in a host and a control queue in a segmentation and reassembly (SAR) subsystem are on opposite sides of a host bus in a control plane. Buffer descriptors in the host and the SAR and buffers in the host are in a data plane. To transfer cell payloads to a first line interfacing the SAR, the host writes the SAR that it has such cell payloads. The host writes the host buffer descriptors into the control queue to obtain the transfer of the buffer payload to the first line. The SAR writes the status queue when the transfer has been completed. To transfer cell payloads to the host memory, the host writes into the control queue the address of the buffers to receive the payload from the SAR. The SAR then writes the buffer descriptors to the status queue to obtain the transfer of the cell payloads to the buffers. Each of the control and status queues may be respectively considered to constitute two (2) control queues and two (2) status queues.

Abstract: Parsing capabilities may be provided to define a parser within network hardware. By selectively loading one or more desired parsing capabilities, a parser may change its behavior. In one embodiment, a loadable set of rules associated with a particular packet type may be used to provide a dynamic parser (e.g., defined in a state machine). For a host, a data packet (e.g., an Ethernet packet) may be received in an adapter of an Ethernet device. Before transferring the data packet from the Ethernet device to the host, one or more action-based parsing rules may be dynamically loaded in the adapter. Instead of parsing the data packet based on a static set of pre-loaded rules, the dynamic parser may advantageously use the dynamically loaded action-based parsing rules to identify the data packet based on the packet type, for example.

Abstract: A customer premise equipment (CPE) device operating in a combined bridge/router mode is disclosed herein. The CPE device may implement a PPP-based bridge in conjunction with a wide area network (WAN) client (e.g., a PPPoE or PPPoA client) to configure and establish a PPP-based link between the CPE device and an access concentrator connected to a WAN, eliminating the need for a WAN client at an end user device on a local area network (LAN) connected to the CPE device. The CPE device further may be adapted to assign a global IP address (e.g., the global IP address assigned to the CPE device) to the end user device, thereby facilitating data communication between the end user device and the WAN without requiring the use of network address translation (NAT) or a similar process at the CPE device.

Abstract: The invention relates to ATM systems, and particularly to mobility and call control management therein. A wireless ATM network comprises at least on ATM switch, and base stations connected to the ATM switch by a user-network-interface interface. In addition, at least one controlling network element of a conventional PLMN network, such as a mobile telephone exchange or a base station controller, which is responsible for the mobility management and call control, is connected to the ATM network by the UNI interface. A permanent virtual channel is provided between the base station and the controlling PLM element for PLM-specific signalling (signalling related to, for example, call control, mobility management or radio resource management). The ATM switch therebetween forwards the signalling without interpreting it in any way. The PLMN element remotely controls the ATM switch to switch a virtual connection between the base station and another point according to the ATM standards.

  • Patent number: 6603765
Abstract: The invention provides a system and method for sharing packet traffic load among a plurality of possible paths. Each packet is associated with a flow, and a hash value is determined for each flow, so as to distribute the sequence of packets into a set of hash buckets. The hash value has a relatively large number of bits, but is divided by the number of possible paths so as to achieve a relatively small modulus value; the modulus value is used to index into a relatively small table associating one selected path with each entry. The modulus value is determined by a relatively small amount of circuitry, simultaneously for a plurality of moduli, and one such modulus value is selected in response to the number of possible paths.

Abstract: A switch queue predictive protocol (SQPP) includes a packet switching system including: a switch fabric having a cross-point switch, and a plurality of line cards, each coupled to the switch fabric. A cross-point buffer is located at each cross-point of the cross-point switch. The switch fabric also includes a plurality of actual available queue space tables (AAQSTs), each identifying the actual queue space available in a row of the cross-point buffers. Each of the line cards includes an input buffer, an output buffer, and a predicted available queue space table (PAQST) identifying predicted queue space available in a corresponding row of the cross-point buffers. Packet information is transmitted from a source line card to the switch fabric only if available queue space is predicted by the corresponding PAQST. The switch fabric uses the AAQST to update the PAQST after packet information is transmitted to a destination line card.

Abstract: For transporting data packets of a data stream between a packet-oriented network (LAN) and a channel-oriented data stream processing module (VMOD), a data stream controller (ST) is provided which, via a data channel allocation module (VMUX), accesses an interface module (PS) for exchanging the data packets with the network (LAN) and/or accesses the data stream processing module (VMOD). The data stream controller (ST) transmits a data channel allocation information item (DKl1, DKl2) to the interface module (PS) and/or to the data stream processing module (VMOD). Using a data channel allocation information item (DKl1, DKl2) in each case transmitted, the data packets are transmitted directly between the interface module (PS) and the data stream processing module (VMOD), bypassing the data channel allocation module (VMUX).

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to portions of a switch fabric having a single logical stage and at least one physical stage. In addition, the data paths and the control paths of the switch fabric can be decoupled thereby allowing additional processing to be performed than would otherwise be the case with control rates that matched the high data rates. In other words, data cells received on high speed links can be spread over many lower speed links; consequently, the data cells can transit the switch fabric at that high speed while the control information associated with the data can be processed at that lower speed. Because the control information can be processed at a lower speed (associated with the control path), the control information can be processed over a greater period of time.
