  • Patent number: 9166813
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for the delivery of digital television and interactive broadband service in a manner that maximizes the usage of the digital broadcast spectrum. A digital television signal is transmitted to a given broadcast area in a relatively small part (for example, a 1 MHz band) of one or more licensed portions of the digital broadcast spectrum. Interactive broadband service is delivered within at least a portion of the same broadcast area covered by the broadcast digital television signal, in the remainder (for example, a 5 MHz band) of an unused part of the same licensed portion of the digital broadcast spectrum as is occupied by the digital television signal, or within an unlicensed (unused) portion of the digital broadcast spectrum. The broadcasting of the digital television and delivery the interactive broadband service occur simultaneously. In one embodiment, digital television and broadband service are delivered by the same equipment within the same bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 8976969
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed in which delay is applied to analog-sourced audio in a radio simulcast when the analog signal initially leads the digital signal. A radio receiver is configured to receive a simulcast radio program broadcast with an analog signal and a digital signal. The program content can be extracted from either the analog or digital signals, with the audio source eventually being blended to the digital signal. Audio is initially provided based on the analog signal. If the analog signal is initially leading the digital signal, delay is applied a data stream corresponding to the analog signal relative to a data stream corresponding to the digital signal. Delay applied to the data stream corresponding to the analog signal is increased at a rate that avoids audio artifacts of the output audio. The blend is performed when the data streams are aligned in time.

Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for extracting messages from a person using the body features presented by a user. The present invention captures a set of images and extracts a first set of body features, along with a set of contexts, and a set of meanings. From the first set of body features, the set of contexts, and the set of meanings, the present invention generates a set of words corresponding to the message that the person is attempting to convey. The present invention can also use the body features of the person in addition to the voice of the person to further improve the accuracy of extracting the person's message.

  • Patent number: 8400940
Abstract: A modem for use in Digital Subscriber Line communications transmits and receives data over the local subscriber loop in common with voice information over the loop, while avoiding the need for voice/data splitters. The modem responds to disruptions associated with “disturbance events” such as on-hook to off-hook transitions and the like by rapidly switching between pre-stored channel parameter control sets defining communications over the loop under varying conditions. In addition to changing parameter control sets responsive to a disturbance event, the modem may also change transmission power levels and other system parameters such as frequency domain equalizer characteristics. Further, provisions are made for reduced bandwidth communications under selected conditions.

  • Patent number: 8396084
Abstract: Systems and methods for point-to-multipoint communications with CAS are provided. In one embodiment, a line unit comprises: an interface to communicate with a node using a first frame structure comprising timeslots, the frame structure transporting signaling bits in an x'th timeslot; the unit coupled another line unit via a communication link, wherein the other unit communicates with another network node using a second frame structure comprising timeslots, the second frame structure transporting signaling bits via its x'th timeslot. Payload timeslots for a first frame received from the other line unit are mapped from the second frame structure to payload timeslots of a second frame using the first frame structure and transmitted via the interface. The x'th timeslot for each of the first and second frame structures are formatted in a multiframe structure comprising a schedule of signaling bit locations allocated to signaling bits corresponding to a designated payload timeslot.
