Region specific encoding and SAO-sensitive-slice-width-adaptation for improved-quality HEVC encoding
Patent number: 10841581Abstract: A method provides for encoding a frame of video using an edge map made up of one or more edge-blocks detected in the frame. When the edge-blocks are contiguous, at least one slice partition is formed using the edge-blocks and the slice partition is encoded using a sample adaptive offset (SAO) filter, wherein the slice partition is formed with an adaptive slice width, and the sample adaptive offset (SAO) filter is turned on or off during the encoding based on whether the edge-blocks are being encoded. When the edge-blocks are not contiguous, edge-block processing is performed around edges in the frame during encoding of the edge-blocks. The edge-block processing involves configuring one or more of: an intra block size, a transform block size, an inter prediction block size, a quantization parameter, candidate modes for intra prediction, pyramid level for motion estimation, and fractional pixel motion estimation search.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2017Date of Patent: November 17, 2020Assignee: ARRIS Enterprises LLCInventors: Shailesh Ramamurthy, Padmassri Chandrashekar, Anil Kumar Nellore -
Patent number: 10217197Abstract: The following provides a system and method to display images on a display screen (e.g. via a display panel or by projection) and the processing of image data therefor. In one aspect, the system implements a luminance retargeting method for altering the perceived contrast and/or colors of an image to match their appearance under different luminance levels. In another aspect, the system may provide a method for transforming an image locally within a sub-area of an image to adjust image contrast for display by a display device. In yet another aspect, the system may provide a method for transforming an image of a first luminance to adjust a perceived color hue thereof for display by a display device according to a second luminance. In yet another aspect, the system may provide a method for transforming an image having a first luminance to adjust a color saturation thereof for display by a display device having a second luminance.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2015Date of Patent: February 26, 2019Assignee: Irystec Software Inc.Inventors: Rafal Mantiuk, Wanat Robert

Patent number: 9538204Abstract: Provided are a filtering method and apparatus for removing blocking artifacts and ringing noise. The filtering method includes transforming video data on a block-by-block basis, and detecting the presence of an edge region in the video data by checking the distribution of values obtained by the transformation. Accordingly, it is possible to completely remove blocking artifacts and/or ringing noise by more effectively detecting the presence of an edge region in video data.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2015Date of Patent: January 3, 2017Assignee: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD.Inventors: Jeong-Hoon Park, Yong-je Kim, Yung-Iyul Lee

Patent number: 9445131Abstract: A novel de-blocking and de-banding filter and a related method of operation reduce and/or remove blocking and banding artifacts that originate from a low bitrate video compression. For filtering a luminance channel, the de-blocking and de-banding filter determines filtering needs and also adjusts filtering strengths based on a compression level (Qp) and a gray level of the video signal. For filtering a chrominance channel, the de-blocking and de-banding filter determines the filtering needs and adjusts the filtering strengths based on Qp alone. Preferably, the de-blocking and de-banding filter utilizes a low pass filter of adjustable strength at a border of a block perpendicular to the border or a band border. The adjustable strength of the de-blocking and de-banding filter is a function of the compression level (Qp) and/or the gray level of the video signal, but does not depend on a duration of the blocking and/or banding artifacts.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2015Date of Patent: September 13, 2016Assignee: Faroudja Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Yves Faroudja, Daniel Campbell, Xu Dong

Patent number: 8218655Abstract: A method, system and device are provided for pre-filtering device for filtering a video signal prior to digitally encoding. The method includes receiving at least one input picture and at least one reconstructed picture from an encoding process and performing an in-loop temporal filtering process using at least one input picture and at least one reconstructed picture from an encoding process to output a pre-filtered video signal for use in an encoding process. The result is enabling an encoding process to produce an output with increased temporal correlation between adjacent pictures regardless of the coding type, since the artifacts introduced by the encoding process are also considered by the process.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2005Date of Patent: July 10, 2012Assignee: Maxim Integrated Products, Inc.Inventors: Alexandros Michael Tourapis, Lulin Chen, Jose Roberto Alvarez
