To estimate temporal distortion, a sliding window approach is used. Specifically, multiple sliding windows around a current frame are considered. Within each sliding window, a large distortion density is calculated and a sliding window with the highest large distortion density is selected. A distance between the current frame and the closest frame with large distortion in the selected window is calculated. Subsequently, the temporal distortion is estimated as a function of the highest large distortion ratio, the spatial distortion for the current frame, and the distance. In another embodiment, a median of spatial distortion values is calculated for each sliding window and the maximum of median spatial distortion values is used to estimate the temporal distortion.

These estimates of the lateral spatial extent of a gas plume can also be used to provide a distance estimate to the source of the gas plume. Wind direction information can be used to provide improved location estimates for sources of gas leaks.

A transaction is authenticated between users based on a calculated expectation of what should be returned when it provides its own digital image of the colorgram displayed by the first mobile smartphone.

The differences may be dampened if associated with expected wear and tear. Thus the impact on the match correlation value of such differences may be reduced. The differences may be enhanced if associated with changes that are not explainable as wear and tear.
