Abstract: A flexible zipper incorporating a layer of gas-impermeable thermoplastic material in one or both flanges. The zipper is installed in the mouth of a reclosable package or bag made of gas-impermeable material shaped to form a receptacle. The gas-impermeable web material of the receptacle and the layer of gas-impermeable material of the zipper form a substantially gastight enclosure for preserving the perishable contents of the package. Flexible zippers having a layer of gas-impermeable thermoplastic material joined to a layer of gas-permeable thermoplastic material are preferably manufactured by a coextrusion process. The resulting gas barrier inside the receptacle has a zone of preferential tearing.

Abstract: A zippered bag comprises a main bag body having first and second opposing face members, a top, a bottom, and first and second opposing sides; and a zipper disposed on the main bag body. The zipper extends from the top to one of the first and second opposing sides so as to be oblique relative to the top. The zipper may comprise a male track and a female track engageable therewith. The male track and the female track may be formed by an injection molding. Each of the male track and the female track may comprise a main portion and end portions provided on opposite ends of the main portion, each of the end portions having a smaller height than that of the main portion.

Abstract: A reclosable package has a first wall and a second wall opposite to the front wall A first zipper profile including a first interlocking member is attached to the first wall and a second profile having a second interlocking member, engageable with the first interlocking member, is attached to the second wall. A slider is positioned on the profiles for movement along the profiles from side to side of the package. Package material is provided which must be removed or ruptured to permit operation of the slider or to provide access to the package contents. In either event, the steps needed to permit the initial access to the package contents leave clear evidence for a consumer that the package has been opened.

Abstract: A resealable package having a slider-operated zipper wherein the contents of the package are accessed through the front wall of the package, not through the top of the package. The resealable package comprises: a bag body comprising front and rear walls of bag making material; a flexible zipper joined to the front wall and not joined to the rear wall; and a slider mounted to the zipper, the slider being movable in a first direction along the zipper for opening the zipper and movable in a second direction along the zipper for closing the zipper. Alternatively, the flexible zipper is joined to the front wall along first and second zones of joinder disposed at different heights on the front wall, and is joined to the rear wall only in zones of joinder where the zipper is joined to both of the front and rear walls.

Abstract: A bag having a reclosable sealer and methods of forming and using the same are provided. The bag, for example, can include a tube body having a plurality of laminated layers. A reclosable sealer can be attached to a first wall of the tube body. When the bag is in an open bag position, a first portion of the reclosable sealer is separated from a second portion of the reclosable sealer. When the reclosable sealer is in the closed seal position, the first portion of the reclosable sealer contacts the second portion of the reclosable sealer forming a seal to thereby allow the bag to be readily opened and closed. Peripheral portions of the bag can remain unsealed after initial opening when the reclosable sealer is in the closed seal position to indicate that initial opening has occurred and that tampering with the bag may have occurred.

Abstract: A slider-zipper assembly for reclosable packaging in which the slider is mounted inside the zipper. Each zipper part comprises a base and a closure element connected to the base, the respective closure elements being mutually engageable. The slider comprises a body having one end where the zipper is open and another end where the zipper is closed, a first direction being directed from the closed end to the open end and a second direction being opposite to the first direction. A pair of camming surfaces on the slider have respective fixed positional relationships to the body and are divergent in the first direction. These camming surfaces are disposed so that the zipper parts are respectively cammed toward each other as the slider is moved in the first direction and cammed away from each other as the slider is moved in the second direction. No part of the slider confronts the exterior surfaces of the bases of the zipper parts.

Abstract: A recloseable bag for marinading food including a flexible plastic sheet having side edges, a flexible foil sheet having side edges and sealed to the flexible plastic sheet along the edges of the sheets to form a generally rectangular bag having first and second ends and opposed sides, a recloseable closure joining the flexible plastic sheet and the flexible foil sheet adjacent the first end of the bag, and an arcuate rupturable seal extending from one opposed side to another opposed side and joining the flexible plastic sheet and the flexible foil sheet. The arcuate rupturable seal, the opposed sides, and the second end form a marinade storage compartment. A top of the arcuate rupturable seal is approximately centrally located between the opposite sides, and the recloseable closure, the opposed sides, and the second end form a food storage compartment for marinating food upon opening of the arcuate rupturable seal.

At least one fold structure is located between and defined by the two areas of structural weakness. An opening is located generally opposite the fold structure. The reclosable bag further includes a reclosable fastener structure having an integral skirt structure of skirt web material extending therefrom. The integral skirt structure includes a distal margin. The distal margin is coupled to the web material at, at least one location between the areas of structural weakness and the opening. The reclosable fastener structure extends past the areas of structural weakness and into the fold structure. The reclosable bag capable of being filled with at least one food product through the opening.

Abstract: Both apparatus and methods for flexible recloseable containers with peel seals are disclosed. In one embodiment, the peel seal has a height greater than the height of the fastener strip flange to which it is attached. The upper portion of the peel seal is attached to the flange. The lower portion of peel seal is attached to a wall of the container. Also disclosed are methods for fabricating containers, and also for forming, filling, sealing a container with a product therein.

Abstract: The present invention provides a package comprising a bag having lines of weakness and a pull-tab opener secured to the bag proximate to the lines of weakness, the pull-tab opener having a pull-tab opening integral therewith. In a preferred embodiment, the pull-tab opener is a reusable pull-tab opener.

Abstract: A re-sealable container closure label including a base label and a cover label, and a hook-and-loop fastener system and a tamper-evident tear strip is sandwiched therebetween. In a preferred embodiment, the base label is adhered to the front wall of a container, preferably a bag, adjacent an opening in the bag. A flap of the bag is folded downwardly over the opening and adheres to the front wall, the cover label, the two-part hook-and-loop fastener system and the tear strip. In an alternative embodiment, container closure label includes a hook-and-loop fastener system and a tear strip secured only to a base label. This alternative embodiment label is adhered to the front wall of a bag as in the preferred embodiment, except that the flap is adhered directly over the fastener system and tear strip. To open a bag sealed with the re-sealable container closure label, a user pulls the tear strip, which permits the flap to open and form a pour opening.

Abstract: A reclosable bag is filled through an opening defined between a back side of a folded closure strip secured to an inner surface of the bag on one side of the bag opening, and an inner surface of the other side of the bag opening. The filled bag is sealed by joining the back side of the closure strip to the opposing bag wall at a point outboard of the closure strip and bag opening. The bag is later opened by breaking through a frangible section in a folded portion of the closure strip, between mating bands of hooks and loops. In some cases, an extension of one side of the bag forms a handle or a fitment; in particular, funnels can be formed from integral extensions of the closure strip, integral extensions of the bag-making material, or from a discrete preform which is joined to the bag construction.

Abstract: A bag equipped with matching closure profiles. The bag is made from a supply of at least a film for forming the bag walls. A supply is unwound of closure assemblies having a W-shaped support sheet, constituting an inner U-shaped tear band provided on its inner surfaces opposite respectively matching closure profiles. External side webs extend beyond the closure profiles and the U-shaped inner band. The closure assembly is further pre-equipped with a series of sliders actuating the closure profiles distributed over the length of the unwinding closure assembly. The resulting closure assembly is fixed by the external side support webs on the film forming the bag wall.

Abstract: The presently preferred embodiments relate to film structures that are exposed to focused energy to provide a score line on an internal layer of the film structure, or on both an internal layer of a film structure and an outer layer of the film structure. In addition, the present invention relates to a package that may be torn along the score line. More specifically, the package may have a score line provided on an internal layer of barrier material, such as ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, polyvinylidene chloride copolymer, nylon, or any other laser scorable barrier material. The score line in an internal layer and/or in the surface of the film may allow the package to be opened using tearing forces, thereby exposing a product within the package and allowing a user of the package to gain access to product that may be contained therein.

Abstract: A reclosable fastener assembly (10) for a reclosable plastic bag (18) in which the fastener assembly (10) is sealed to a single wall (14) of the plastic bag. The fastener assembly (10) includes various tear-openable barrier arrangements with the barrier arrangements sealing and protecting the contents of the reclosable plastic bag (18) before being torn open.

Abstract: A flexible container of the pouch type, made of material in film form, derived from a contoured tubular body formed by a film with longitudinal and transverse heat-seals of the two ends. The longitudinal heat-seal forms the edge of a longitudinal wing that is folded against the corresponding wall. A portion of the wing is joined to a corresponding portion of the wall with low-tack adhesive so as to surround a region preset to form a hole for access to the container, the first lifting of the wing opening the hole and the container, and the low-tack adhesive ensuring successive repeated opening and closure actions.

Abstract: A reclosable package (10) for the retail display of a food product and for the purchase and storage thereof by a consumer has tamper-evident features to enable the consumer to discern whether the package has been opened prior to purchase. The package (10) includes a header (26) formed by attaching the front and back sheets (12,14) of the package (10) to one another above the interlocking profiles (20,22) of the zipper (18) of the package (10) with a peel seal. Below the interlocking profiles (20,22), the front sheet (12) has a line of weakness (32), such as a line of perforations extending transversely across the package (10) below the interlocking profiles (20,22). A tear in the line of weakness (32) or a breach of the peel seal would readily indicate that the integrity of the package (10) has been compromised.

Abstract: A reclosable package for scoopable products, such as flour and detergent. The package has a closed plastic zipper installed in a gusset. The gusset comprises first and second panels connected at a fold line. The zipper comprises first and second zipper portions respectively joined to the first and second gusset panels. In one embodiment, the zipper portions are connected by a fold line situated adjacent the gusset fold line. In another embodiment, the zipper portions are connected by a fold line situated away from the gusset. In a third embodiment, the zipper portions are not connected prior to opening the package along the gusset fold line. A peel seal is placed between the zipper portions and above the interlocked profiled closure elements of the zipper.

Abstract: A flexible package generally including a front panel portion, a back panel portion, a first side panel portion, and at least one access device. The flexible package can further include a second side panel portion, a bottom panel portion, and a top panel portion. Additionally, one or more of the portions can be shaped and/or manufactured substantially as a gusset. Each of the panel portions comprise two longitudinal sides or edges. The access-device can be attached to at least one surface of at least one of the side panel portions such that the device is in transverse orientation to the longitudinal sides. The device can be manually attached to the side portions, or attached with existing and/or specially designed manufacturing machinery. Attachment of the access device to a side portion of the package is achieved using heat bonding techniques, adhesives, and the like.

The one-time breakable element comprises first and second sections and initially extends from the first fin portion to the second fin portion. Each of the first and second sections extends upwardly and inwardly from near the respective second ends of the first and second fin portions so as to form a generally inverted U-shaped or V-shaped cross-sectional configuration. The first and second opposing body panels are attached to respective first and second sections of the one-time breakable element.

Abstract: A reclosable package or bag having a mouth with a hermetic plastic zipper installed therein. The hermetic zipper has first and second interlockable profiled structures connected by a frangible connection and having no flanges. The package or bag is constructed such that the frangible connection resides on the product side of the zipper, i.e., the frangible connection extends inside the receptacle of the package or bag, when the package is in an unopened state, i.e., when the zipper is closed. Preferably, the first interlockable profiled structure has at least one male member with an expanded head and the second interlockable profiled structure has at least one female member with a groove for receiving the expanded head of a male member.

Abstract: There is provided a resealable flap or label adapted to be placed in sealing engagement with an orifice of a flexible container. The resealable flap comprises a body having an interior portion and a pair of indented side edges. The flap has at least one hook cut extending from one of the pair of side edges to the interior portion. The body has an adhesive portion that removable connects the body over the orifice. The resealable flap or label has perforations for the at least one hook cut, which allows application of the flap by a blow on type applicator.

Abstract: A paper bag is provided with a closure flap (14) such that a portion thereof protrudes from the opening edge (11a) of a paper bag body (11), that is opened to allow the removal of its content. The surface of the portion of the closure flap (14) that protrudes from the opening edge (11a) of the paper bag body (11) is coated with a non-water-soluble hot-melt adhesive (17). An underlining paper piece (20) is previously affixed, with a water-soluble adhesive (21), to the wall surface area where the closure flap (14) overlaps when it seals the opening of the paper bag by reactivating the hot-melt adhesive (17) on the surface of the closure flap (14), thus making it possible to peel this underlining paper piece (20) off from the wall surface (11c) of the paper bag body (11) together with a split part of the closure flap (14). This configuration makes it easy to remove all pieces of the paper bag to which the non-water-soluble adhesive is adhered before recycling process.

The second profile has a flange portion secured to the other wall proximal a top end of that wall and to the first wall at a location below the location at which the first flange is secured to the first wall. A line of weakness extends along the second flange portion parallel to the profile interlocking member and between the two securing points. The line of weakness is formed in the cusp of a V-shaped section formed in the second flange and a peel seal is provided above the line of weakness joining together the sides of the V-shaped section.

Abstract: Reclosable bags, plastic film for making the bags, and a method and apparatus for making the bags are disclosed. The bag has a reclosable fastener (26) connected to a single wall of the bag, and the film (55) has a reclosable fastener (26) connected to one side thereof which does not require attachment to any other portion of the film (55) when making a bag. The fastener (26) has a tamper-proof member attached thereto to indicate if the bag has been previously opened. The film (55) can be wound into a roll (54) suitable for use on conventional bag making machines including form, fill, and seal machines or a chain of coilable reclosable bags can be produced therefrom since the fasteners (26) are connected to the web preferably transversely to the bags longitudinal formation axis.

Abstract: A bag having a built-in closure tab is defined. The closure tab is formed from the outer layer of the laminate which makes up the bag. When a user of the bag wishes to close the bag, the user folds or rolls the sides of the bag together down the side of the bag having the tab. The tab is partially separated from the rest of the outer layer of the laminate. A pressure sensitive adhesive disposed on the interior surface of the tab is used to affix the tab to the rolled down portion of the bag, preventing unwanted opening of the bag. The tab may be affixed and removed from the rolled down portion a number of times, thereby allowing the user to open and reseal the bag as many times as desired.

Abstract: A reclosable packaging having a slider/zipper assembly, a header and a tamper-evident feature which undergoes a tangible change when the slider is moved relative to the header for the first time. The tamper-evident feature comprises a layer of sticky or adhesive material placed between a surface of the header and an opposing surface of the slider, thus forming a seal. The material must have a peel strength or resistance to rupture sufficient to resist an initial movement of the slider along the zipper. If the slider is stuck or adhered to the header, this indicates that the package or bag has not been tampered with, i.e., previously opened. When sufficient force is applied, the seal can be broken, allowing the slider to move relative to the header along the zipper in the direction of opening. Once broken, the seal cannot be restored by simply returning the slider to its original position and pressing the slider against the sticky or adhesive material.

Abstract: A package in the form of a reclosable bag includes a bag body including front and back walls, and a profile strip fastener assembly sealingly mounted on the inside surface of the front wall. The profile strip fastener assembly includes a pair of releasably interlocking profile strips, with a secondary, peelable seal provided between the profile strips apart from their mechanically interlocked portions. By this arrangement, enhanced sealing for the package is provided, while abating the stress to which the interlocked portions of the profile strips are subjected during forming and filling of the package. The bag body preferably includes a frangible joint substantially aligned with the fastener assembly for gaining access to the assembly, with the frangible joint desirably providing tamper-evidence of opening of the package. The profile strips are sealed to the front wall of the bag body with a continuous oval shaped seal around the frangible joint. The perimeter seal is located above the peelable seal.

The folded member is only secured to the top layer such that, when the perforation is torn, a portion of the folded member may be unfolded to reveal a repositionable adhesive which is used to retain an end of the package in a closed position.

A reclosable zipper is mounted along the mouth for selective opening and closing of the package. The second side member includes a tear region having lower shear strength than remaining portions of the second side panel. Methods of operation and manufacture are described.

The spout flap is separable from the base sheet, via a first adhesive material is affixed to one or both of the spout flap and base sheet, for enabling repeated opening and reclosing of a portion of a portion of the bag mouth at the spout flap.

Abstract: A resealable closure for a bag is described wherein the bag has upper and lower ends and including a front wall member, a back wall member, and opposite side wall members. The lower end of the bag is sealed in conventional fashion. The upper ends of the wall members are folded downwardly adjacent the front wall member to form a flap which extends across the upper end of the bag with the upper flap being permanently sealed, by an adhesive, to the front wall member except for a flap portion adjacent one of the side wall members. The resealable closure is positioned between the flap portion and the front wall of the bag and permits the flap portion to be opened to form a pour opening in the upper comer of the bag. The flap portion may be resealed by the resealable closure. The closure is designed so that the contents of the bag will not come into contact with any sticky or tacky surface as the material is being poured from the bag.

Abstract: An easy open industrial bag includes a tab secured to a front wall on the exterior of the bag. The tab is secured between the front wall and a flap formed on a back wall of the bag and folded over and secured to the front wall for closing the bag. The flap is secured with an adhesive disposed in a pattern providing an adhesive void at an opening edge of the bag.

Abstract: An aperture forming structure, which when attached to or integrally formed in dispenser packages for flowable substances allows reclosure and single or multiple uses. The aperture forming structure includes a break away tip member of thermoformable plastic. The break away tip includes a hollow protrusion from a surface. The intersection of the hollow protrusion and the surface is a fault line. Rupturing of the fault line creates an aperture from which the contents of the dispenser package may exit. A cap may be integrally formed with the aperture forming structure and detached for protecting the hollow protrusion or for closing the aperture created when the fault line is ruptured. The aperture forming structure can be made by heating a relatively stiff substantially flat thermoformable sheet of and then stretching the sheet to create a first and a second hollow protrusion in a tiered configuration. A rupture line is placed at the intersection of the first and the second protrusions.
