Patent number: 5582490Abstract: A multi-sided wheel to replace one of the wheels of an existing cold milling machine. The wheel has a series of flat surfaces in spaced relationship. The flat surfaces allow the machine to drop its cutting drum relative to the surface over which the machine is traveling to cut a rumble strip. As the wheel rotates, it will support the machine on one of the points formed by the confluence of two adjacent flat surfaces, thereby raising the machine and causing it to raise its cutting drum out of the rumble strip that it has just cut. Because the flat surfaces are spaced apart, the cutting drum will be moved forward in a looping fashion as the wheel rotates before the wheel drops onto the next flat surface to lower the cutting drum for cutting the next, spaced rumble strip. Thus, the multi-sided wheel causes the machine to move up and down as it propels along its path of travel. A pentagonal wheel is the optimal design for use in conjunction with a Wirtgen.RTM. W500.TM.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1994Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignee: Wirtgen America, Inc.Inventor: Stuart W. Murray

Patent number: 5540518Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling striping equipment mounted on a vehicle includes a controller. The controller receives signals from a distance measuring device and various sensors. The controller also receives operator input via a console having operator controls. Based on the operator input, the controller determines striping commands which instruct the controller to cause the striping equipment to paint a painting pattern. The controller generates a striping program during a striping operation by saving the striping commands as a function of the measured distance. Using a previously saved striping program, the controller can cause the repainting of a previous striping operation. The controller also monitors striping operational data as a function of the distance travelled, and performs diagnostic functions to determine malfunction of the striping control system and the controller itself.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1993Date of Patent: July 30, 1996Assignee: Linear Dynamics Inc.Inventor: James C. Patent number: 4793731Abstract: A truck having a road oil spreader is equipped with an apparatus for simultaneous application of oil and paving fabric to the road surface. The apparatus includes an assembly for engaging a roll of paving fabric comprising adjustable cone arms mounted on end plates that rotatably hold the core of the fabric roll. The fabric is drawn over a guide shaft and beneath a sectioned box beam having a series of longitudinally aligned brushes. The shaft and brushes are connected to the opposing end plates which are attached to a lateral support beam. The end plates and box beam include joint, drive and connection means that permit longitudinal, vertical and angular adjustment of the guide shaft and brushes. As oil is sprayed over the road surface, the fabric unrolls and becomes embedded in the oil by action of the brushes pushing the fabric into the oil-coated surface.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1987Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Inventor: Edward C. Patent number: 4792259Abstract: The mechanical device used for carrying out the procedure consists of a reel (B), upon which is wound a conveyor sheet. Before the sheet is wound onto the said reel, the retroreflecting elements (A) are attached to it, maintaining a certain preestablished spacing between the elements. When the sheet is made to unwind from the reel (B) and passed over the sharp-edged body (C), the retroreflecting elements (A) are mechanically detached from the sheet and deposit themselves onto the road surface (S), maintaining the same preestablished spacing between them. The sheet, from which the retroreflecting elements have been detached, is then rewound onto the rewind reel (E).The surface of the said sheet (B) can either be coated with an adhesive (sticky) substance, while the surfaces of the retroreflecting elements (A) are treated with a detaching polymer, or the sheet surface can be treated with the detaching polymer, with the surfaces of the retroreflecting elements coated with the adhesive (sticky) substance.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1986Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Inventor: Helmut Eigenmann

Patent number: 4772511Abstract: Solid, transparent, non-vitreous, zirconia and zirconia-silica ceramic microspheres, useful as lens elements in retroreflective pavement markings. The microspheres are characterized by:(a) containing at least one additive metal oxide selected from alumina, magnesia, yttria and mixtures thereof;(b) an index of refraction greater than 1.6; and(c) being virtually free of cracks. These microspheres are formed by a sol-gel technique of extractive gelation (extracting carboxylic acid away from zirconyl carboxylate) of a sol in liquid medium such as hot peanut oil. The microspheres of this ceramic composition have been made with relatively large diameters, (e.g. 200-1000 micrometers) making them quite useful as lens elements in pavement marking sheet materials.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1985Date of Patent: September 20, 1988Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Thomas E. Patent number: 4765773Abstract: A mobile paint application and microwave drying apparatus has a downwardly open hollow frame forming a microwave cavity movable over a surface on rollers. The interior cavity of the frame is coated with microwave absorbent material, as are the rollers. The frame in the front and rear conforms to the rollers with a certain gap and ends above the surface at a certain distance. Treads extend between the front and rear rollers on each side and have a thickness which is greater than the gap and distance so as to create a circuitous path from the cavity which blocks microwave radiation. A paint spray nozzle is located in the cavity and applies paint to the surface. This paint is rapidly dried by a microwave generator which is positioned in the cavity and directs radiation onto the wet paint.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1987Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Inventor: Harry C. Patent number: 4764051Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting grooves on the edges of an already formed road. Each of a plurality of toothed cutting wheels revolves about a substantially vertical driving shaft. Simultaneously, each cutting wheel (attached to a respective rotary shaft) revolves about its own longitudinal and substantially horizontal axis. The apparatus is moved along a road, near an edge thereof, thus giving rise to one linear motion and two rotary motions. Sequentially, each cutting wheel enters an edge of the road from a region beyond the road edge, due to a slight tilt of the plane which contains the cutting wheel rotary shafts. The resultant grooves are deepest at the road edges and then gradually diminish to zero depth, the grooves being arcuate and parallel to each other. With the plane containing the cutting wheel shafts completely horizontal, the apparatus can cut rain drainage grooves in a raised marking strip on the road or can remove bumps from the road.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1987Date of Patent: August 16, 1988Inventor: James R. Patent number: 4701069Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting rain drainage grooves in a road surface, such as at the edges of the road to form a road marker system. A cutting cylinder rotates about its longitudinal axis, the latter lying in a substantially horizontal plane and at some angle, generally a right angle, to the road direction. The cutting cylinder is mounted on a frame, the latter attached to and carried by an automotive vehicle such as a truck. As the truck travels along the road, the cutting cylinder is moved alternately up and down, into the road surface, and forms the grooves. The cutting cylinder can be slightly tilted, so as to produce grooves of variable width and depth. The truck moves along the road being grooved at a substantially uniform speed. Preferably, the slopping side walls of the grooves are coated with a retro reflective coating. The grooves continuously drain rain so that the retro reflective coating is visible during hours of darkness and rain, to maintain visibility of the road edge to drivers.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1986Date of Patent: October 20, 1987Inventor: James R.
