  • Patent number: 6474910
Abstract: A rockbolt assembly for securement within a borehole generally comprising a rockbolt, an anchor, a hollow tube assembly, a faceplate and a nut. The rockbolt has a threaded free end and a second end associated with the anchor. The hollow tube assembly has open first and second ends and an internally extending threaded portion configured to engage the rockbolt. The threaded portion is positioned between the ends with respective first and second tube areas defined on opposite sides thereof. At least one channel is defined in the tube assembly and extends from one tube area to the other such that a continuous passage traversing the threaded portion is defined between the ends of the tube assembly. The nut engages the tube assembly and the faceplate such that tightening of the nut about the tube assembly is translated through the rockbolt to cause engagement of the anchor.

  • Patent number: 6447228
Abstract: Improvements to a rock bolt and a method of forming a rock bolt are disclosed. The rock bolt includes at least one paddle section that is formed by applying an eccentric shear force to the shank of the bolt from opposite sides of the bolt. The paddle section is thereby comprising an eccentrically deformed portion of the shank of the bolt. The rock bolt is adapted for use in a hold sized to receive the bolt with a clearance fit. A resin mixture contained in the hold is cooperable with the paddle section of the rock bolt to secure the bolt within the hole.

  • Patent number: 6447210
Abstract: A resin nozzle positioner for a rock bolter, having a frame supporting feed tracks traversed by a drill and a bolt driver, has a resin nozzle that guides a resin sausage into a hole drilled along a work axis. A positioner base is fixed to the frame and two arms are pivotably connected to the positioner base and to a nozzle block, to which the resin nozzle is mounted. The arms remain parallel and move such that the resin nozzle remains parallel to the work axis while moving along an arc between a retracted position, where the resin nozzle is spaced apart from the work axis, and an extended position, where the resin nozzle is aligned with the work axis. An actuator operably connected to two elements selected from the arms, the positioner base, and the nozzle block serves to move the resin nozzle.

  • Patent number: 6428243
Abstract: A cable bolt (10) for use in mining excavations comprising a plurality of generally closely spaced wires or strands (11) which have a first end for fitting into a bore hole (21) formed in an excavation and a second end which is terminated within a cylindrical sleeve (17). The sleeve (17) has a threaded external surface for receiving a lock nut (18) which is tightened against a bearing plate (19) so as to tension the cable bolt (10). The wires or strands (11) are separated outwardly from a central longitudinal axis of the cable bolt (10) at spaced locations along the length of the cable bolt to form a “bird cage” (13) at each location. Spacers (14) are provided at each location to cause the outward separation of the wires or strands (11). A central tubular member (12) extends along the axis through the sleeve (17) and each spacer (14).

  • Patent number: 6416256
Abstract: A method of making and applying a chemical anchoring adhesive in the form of a highly viscous, self-contained rope or slug is provided. The rope or slug has an average cross-sectional area determined from a formula that takes into account the cross-sectional area of a borehole, the average cross-sectional area of an anchor pin to be inserted into the borehole, and a penetration factor which reflects penetration of the adhesive into the walls of the borehole. By selecting the proper area for the anchoring adhesive, the rope can be cut into slugs having depths equal to the depths of boreholes. When the slugs are inserted into the boreholes, and anchor pins are driven, the amount of adhesive provided by each slug will be just enough to completely fill the interstitial spaces between the anchor pin and inner wall of the borehole, accounting for penetration of some adhesive into the borehole wall.

  • Patent number: 6402434
Abstract: A method of applying a chemical anchoring adhesive to the interior of a borehole includes the steps of providing a highly viscous, self-contained slug of chemical anchoring adhesive, inserting the slug into the borehole, providing an anchor pin, and driving the anchor pin into the borehole using a driving tool that imparts rotary motion to the anchor pin. The adhesive slug includes a first part having a first color and including a resin, and a second part having a second color different from the first and including a curing agent. The rotary motion of the anchor pin mixes the first and second parts together to form a substantially homogeneous composition having a third color different from the first and second colors. The visual indication provided by the third color notifies the worker when the mixing is complete, saving time and money at the construction site while minimizing the occurrence of defective or insufficient mixing.

  • Patent number: 6390735
Abstract: Apparatus, method, and a kit for a yieldable tendon mine support rock anchor include structure and/or steps including the provision of a metal support member having an outside diameter which is less than a diameter of the rock hole. Preferably, resin cartridges are disposed inside the rock hole. A wedge anchor is provided and is disposed at a distal end of the metal support member and has a narrow portion disposed uphole from a wider base portion thereof. The wedge anchor base portion is narrower than the diameter of the rock hole to permit un-solidified resin to pass from downhole to uphole of the wedge anchor base portion. The wedge anchor is dimensioned to crush solidified uphole resin and permit downhole movement of the crushed solidified resin when a yielding tension is applied to the metal support member and the wedge anchor moves uphole.

  • Patent number: 6237289
Abstract: An improved wing-type ground anchor. The ground anchor includes a central body portion, wings radiating laterally from the body portion, and a leg portion at the front end of the body portion GROUND ANCHOR that operates like a star-point drill for penetrating the ground. The sides of the leg portion each include a plurality of sharpened leading side edges which are longitudinally offset from each other. Each of the wings also includes a plurality of sharpened leading side edges which are longitudinally offset with respect to each other. The offset leading side edges and wing edges progressively extend greater distances laterally outward from the body portion along the length of the leg portion and the wings. Since smaller side edges and wing edges are advanced first, the staged side and wing edges facilitate passage of the ground anchor through soil.
