Abstract: The present invention relates to a cutting tool for milling, boring or turning, comprising a holder shank (10) with a slotted end and a blade (13) clamped in the slotted end of the holder shank (10) by means of a clamping screw (16) which loosely extends through the blade (13). The blade (13) is provided with a recess (22) having radially displaced abutment surfaces (24A,24B) that are to abut outer edges (21A,21B) of the slot so as to radially center blade (13) in the slot (17) when tightening the screw (16). Furthermore, the invention relates to a blade (13) for use in connection with the above-mentioned holder shank (10).
Abstract: The subject invention relates to an improved assembly for mounting a finishing insert in a milling cutter. More particularly, the subject invention facilitates the adjustment of the tilt of a finishing insert relative to a milling cutter to improve the finish of a workpiece. In accordance with the subject invention, a milling cutter is provided with a finishing insert pocket having a planar bottom wall disposed at an inclined angle relative to the planar surface of the cutter. A locating seat, having a finishing insert fixedly mounted therein, is adjustably mounted within the insert pocket. By adjusting the position of the locating seat relative to the insert pocket, the angle of the cutting edge of the finishing insert, relative to the milling cutter is varied. In a preferred embodiment of the subject invention, both the insert pocket and the locating seat include complimentary arcuate walls to provide additional support during the cutting operation.
Abstract: A tool holder for multiple cutting tools is provided with a cam device to permit precise adjustment of the location of at least one of the tools (for example, an end squaring tool) relative to another tool (a bevel tool). The tool holder is particularly adapted for use with a portable lathe having a mandrel extending through the holder.
Abstract: A face milling cutter is disclosed having on-edge indexable inserts located at the periphery of the cutting face of the cutter body positioned to provide principal cutting edges exhibiting relatively small true rake angle and relatively small inclination, or effective shear, angle. Each principal cutting edge is joined at its point of maximum cutting depth by a supplemental wiping edge lying substantially in the cutting plane of rotation.
Abstract: A cutting tool assembly having a cutter head including a pair of jaws defining a slot therebetween with a knife plate having a pair of axially symmetrical cutting edges being exchangeably mounted in the cutter head in the slot between the jaws is provided with a setscrew adjustably connecting the knife plate on the cutter head and with a pair of support members arranged at the base of the slot between the knife plate and the cutter head cooperating with the setscrew to enable adjustment of the knife plate. The support members are internally threaded and interconnected by a bolt having oppositely threaded portions with oblique abutment surfaces being formed on the support members for engagement with the knife plate.

Abstract: A milling cutter includes an array of pockets each having radially extending side walls and a base wall from which radially projects an elongated locating rail. A safety wedge has one surface in engagement with one wall of the pocket and its opposed surface in engagement with one surface of a cutting insert. The latter includes a central hole through which extends a projection extending from the safety wedge. One edge of the cutting insert engages the locating rail, while the opposite surface of the cutting insert is engaged by a wedge surface of a wedge assembly which is connected to the body of the cutting tool, and is selectively operable for shifting of the wedge assembly into wedging engagement with the cutting insert. By this arrangement, the cutting insert is clamped intermediate the safety wedge and the wedge assembly, and the edge of the cutting insert bears against the locating rail.
Abstract: The cutting tool, for example a milling-cutter, with interchangeable insert-holding cartridges comprises a body (1) presenting a peripheral supporting face (4) directed towards the rear end of the body and recesses (2) distributed at its peripheral front end and intended to receive interchangeable cartridges (3). Each cartridge comprises at its front end a cutting bit (5), generally fixed in a removable manner, and a back portion (7) at its rear end presenting a supporting face (8) directed towards the front and intended to come, in a service position, in abutment against the supporting face (4) of the body. The fixing devices (9, 11) of the cartridges on the body of the tool are such that they enable an axial setting of the position of said cartridges, as well as the backward movement thereof for a temporary putting out of service.

Abstract: A milling cutter which is adapted to be rotated about a central axis includes at least one insert pocket having opposed leading and trailing walls, as well as a rear wall. An indexable insert having front and rear planar surfaces is receivable in the insert pocket, along with at least one locking wedge, which is interposed between the insert and the pocket walls for securing the insert within the pocket. In accordance with the subject invention, an adjustable locating wedge is provided for regulating the axial location on the insert. The locating wedge, a portion of which is disposed in abutting relationship with the axially lowermost cutting edge of the insert, is received within a groove located in the rear wall of the insert pocket. The receiving groove is aligned with the insert and extends radially inwardly from the periphery of the cutter body.

Abstract: A ball end mill has a cylindrical tip embedded at the revolving center of the end of the cutter body in the axial direction and one or more arc-shaped flat tips embedded at the end of the cutter body in the radial direction, the former serving as a cutting edge for milling the central part and the latter serving as a cutter edge for milling the peripheral part. Both cutting edges perform uniform milling action and exhibit outstanding durability. The use of throwaway tips extends the life of the tool.
Abstract: A face milling cutter having indexable inserts located in corner pockets at the periphery of the cutting face of the cutter body angularly positioned to provide a cutting edge extending from a point of maximum cutting depth in a direction progressively outward from the axis of rotation, progressively backward relative to direction of rotation and of progressively reduced cutting depth totalling a minor fraction of the outward extension, together with a secondary wiping cutting edge extending from the cutting point inwardly and backwardly relative to the axis and direction of rotation and substantially in the cutting plane of rotation thus providing effective cutting and wiping action in angularly related cutting edges of the same insert.
Abstract: A milling cutter with an infinite adjustment for face run out of the cutting edges in which each cutting edge may be held within 1/10,000 of an inch or less of a common plane. For numerically controlled machines the common plane may be located a fixed distance from the back of the cutter body. Another feature is a positive stop on the wedge which guarantees that once adjusted each insert will remain in adjusted position.
