With Multiple Cutting Positions Patents (Class 408/188)
  • Patent number: 4340327
Abstract: A tool support is provided for removably supporting a twist drill of high speed steel and a pair of indexable cutter blades of tungsten carbide. The cutter blades are triangular and provide three cutting edges about the periphery thereof, and the cutter blades are removably mounted on the tool support to enable selective indexing of the cutting edges to a cutting position. The cutting edge to be used is axially and radially stabilized in the cutting position by engaging edge and bottom portions of the blade in a pocket provided on the tool support. The tool support includes a channel adjacent each of the cutter blades defined by walls extending axially of the tool support in planes parallel to the tool axis and perpendicular to one another to optimize the available area for chip removal, and the entrance ends of the channels are provided with relief surfaces to promote the feeding of chips into the channels.

  • Patent number: 4281430
Abstract: A method and apparatus for machining pipe collars having internally tapered coaxial threads is accomplished by providing a thread cutting tool having defined thereon a single thread groove forming tooth with first and second thread topping forming portions defined on opposite sides of the thread groove forming tooth. The first and second thread toppings are so designed and oriented with respect to the thread groove forming tooth that the first thread topping forms the top configuration of the first tapered threaded surface simultaneously with cutting the thread groove of the first tapered threaded surface. The second thread topping is so oriented with respect to the threaded groove cutting to that it remains clear of the first thread as the first threaded surface is being formed.

  • Patent number: 4278373
Abstract: An indexable insert drill particularly suited for use in machining soft metals such as aluminum or the like. The drill includes an elongated body having a drilling portion with at least one groove extending axially along a portion thereof from the drilling portion end. In one embodiment, a generally triangular cutting insert is fixedly mounted in a receiving pocket included in the groove so that in cutting presentment, the insert cutting edge extends radially of the drilling portion from an innermost end area at the drilling portion longitudinal axis to an outermost end area outwardly of the drilling portion side wall. The cutting insert is configured so that the cutting edge will have neutral lead, neutral radial rake and positive axial rake when the insert is mounted in the receiving pocket. The receiving pocket includes a back tapered side wall defining an insert retaining area for conveniently capturing a side of the cutting insert.

  • Patent number: 4265574
Abstract: A combined boring and milling tool has at least three triangularly shaped turnable cutter blades. The effective cutting edge of the first turnable cutter blade extends as bit (or drilling cutting edge) from the periphery of the shank at least to its axis. A second turnable cutter blade is offset 180.degree. peripherally from the first and its effective cutting edge extends as cutting edge on the periphery of the shank parallel to the shank axis. A third turnable cutter blade is offset axially from the first so that its effective cutting edge extends as a cutting edge parallel to the shank axis. The two effective cutting edges of the second and third turnable cutter blades lie on the same flight circle and their working ranges overlap axially. The first and third turnable cutter blades have a common chip space.

  • Patent number: 4218162
Abstract: A drilling bit has cutting edges radiating from its axis, each being a segmental part of a circular cutter the axis of which is substantially tangential to a circle centered on the bit axis, the cutters being at different distances from the bit axis. The cutters may be rotated to enable worn cutting edges to be replaced and the extremities of all cutting edges are substantially in a plane normal to the bit axis.

  • Patent number: 4190388
Abstract: A single-point metal machining cutting tool takes the form of an elongated bar whose opposed ends are provided with transverse flat bottom, flat wall grooves intersecting the axis of the bar. Tip holders of complementary flat wall configuration may be mounted within the grooves, held in position by a screw passing through the tip holder at its center and received within a tapped and threaded axial hole within the ends of the cutting tool bar. Shear forces during cutting are not transmitted from the tip holder to the bar through the screw, strain on the screw is eliminated, and the ability of the bar to withstand torque during cutting is maximized by the axial location of a single screw hole at each end.

  • Patent number: 4115024
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a spade drill blade and more particularly to a spade drill blade which is adapted to be clamped in the clamp slit of a holder and which has side surfaces that bear against the wall of the bore to be of a raised shape in such a way that during drilling it bears in extremely narrow lateral surface region in a diagonal plane against the inner surface of the bore, and the improvement, therefore, relates to the configuration of the blade with a very narrow contact area between the lateral surfaces of the cutting blade and the wall of the workpiece bore which reduces high surface friction and the risk of jamming or seizure and premature wear which prevents indexing to present the second cutting edge of the blade in the workpiece bore. The raised portion may be shaped in cross section, for example, as a ridge, trapezium, beading, lips or of other forms.

  • Patent number: 4105357
Abstract: This invention is a tool for light machining or finishing of metals in profile machining operations. It consists of a cylindrical shank which terminates at its top in a narrow flared out head which is provided with one or more equally spaced open top and open front cavities which extend partly into the shank. Each cavity has two downwardly converging side walls and one rear wall which extends to form the floor of the cavity. A flat, usually triangular carbide cutter is inserted into each cavity and is held in position between one of the side walls and a wedge which slides within and is tightened against the carbide cutter by means of a setscrew which screws into the floor of the cavity. The invention is shown in two forms, in one of which the release of the wedge releases the pressure on the carbide cutter for replacement purposes, while in the other form the release of the wedge releases the pressure on the carbide cutter and also provides additional clearance space for the cutter to be easily replaced.

  • Patent number: 3981607
Abstract: A boring bar having a removable indexable cutting insert with a plurality of cutting edges is disclosed. The cutting insert is held in place in the bar by a locking finger on an insert clamp which is locked into place by a ball which is wedged against a release pin that engages the clamp. The ball may be moved so as to allow the pin to move, thereby releasing the force applied by the clamp whenever the insert is to be indexed or whenever a replacement of the insert is required. This is achieved by either manual or hydraulic control of a wedge shaft that engages the ball.

  • Patent number: 3935624
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a boring head having two support ledges and a cutter that may be rotated when the cutting edges become worn so as to provide new cutting edges. The cutter is developed as an irregular hexagon the sides of which form a section of the sides of two equilateral triangles which are superposed on each other around an acute angle. The boring head includes a recess for the cutter having contact surfaces against which at least one of rake surfaces behind the cutting edges will bear so as to fix the cutter in a predetermined operating position in which one of the cutting edges cooperates with the two support ledges to provide centering of the boring head in a bored hole.
