The tool holder has an interfacing ledge with a top surface for abutment with a distal spindle surface, and a continuous channel disposed in a proximal portion of the top surface. A resilient dampening member, having a rectangular or a circular cross sectional configuration, resides in the channel for compressed abutment with the spindle surface. Because the dampening member is situated within the channel, the interfacing placement of the spindle surface and tool holder top surface meet as the dampening member is enshrouded in the channel by these abutting surfaces and thereby protected from contaminant entry during dampening action.

  • Patent number: 6048144
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved spindle. The spindle uses improved shrink fit technology. This spindle is heated by means of an electric heating coil. This causes the internal diameter of the spindle bore to expand large enough to fit a toolholder that is manufactured to the predetermined size of 0.0015 per inch of diameter larger than the internal diameter of the spindle bore when both are measured at room temperature. After the toolholder is placed in the spindle a refrigerant blast cools the internal diameter of the spindle bore. This causes the spindle to grip the toolholder in an extremely rigid fashion having a desirable effect on the overall concentricity of the toolholder. The improved shrink fit technology is apparent when removing the toolholder from the spindle. The toolholder is manufactured using a predetermined type of steel with a lower thermal expansion rate than that of the internal diameter of the spindle bore.

  • Patent number: 5788432
Abstract: A spindle apparatus comprises a main shaft mounted for rotary movement, a rotating device for rotating the main shaft about an axis, a vibration device for vibrating the main shaft, a detecting device for detecting a displacement of the main shaft when the main shaft is vibrated by the vibration device and providing an output signal indicative of the displacement of the main shaft, a calculating device for calculating an allowable revolution speed of the main shaft on the basis of the output signal of the detecting device, and a drive source for driving the rotating device to rotate the main shaft within a speed range which does not exceed the allowable revolution speed. When an end of the main shaft is vibrated by the vibration device, a displacement of the vibrated main shaft is detected by the detecting device which provides an output signal indicative of the detected displacement.

  • Patent number: 5782591
Abstract: An apparatus and method for securely, mechanically retaining an elongated tool holding arbor in the tapered bore formed in the spindle of a conventional, rotatable, power driven spindle machine. The arbor is mechanically secured to the spindle by bridging it to a key via a threaded fastener. The arbor includes a longitudinal hole formed therethrough having at least first and second concentric passageways of different diameters. The rectangularly shaped key is sized to be operatively received within and set upon shoulders formed by first and second diametrically opposed openings formed through the spindle. The key includes a tapped hole formed centrally, transversely therethrough. The arbor may be inserted into the spindle's bore, and a fastener having an enlarged head and a threaded shaft may be inserted through the arbor's hole with the threaded shaft passing freely through both first and second passageways, and the head passing through the first passageway but not the second.

  • Patent number: 5694820
Abstract: A short-stroke clamping apparatus for detachably connecting a tool unit to a tool supporter is provided of the type having a canister member which includes apertures for admitting spherical locking elements, and a lock rod that is reciprocally movable a stroke distance along an axis and which has cam portions for moving the spherical locking elements through the canister apertures into engagement with the tool unit. In the clamping apparatus, the canister member apertures are elongated along the stroke axis. This allows the spherical locking elements to move axially along the cam portions of the lock rod as well as radially, such that locking engagement can be achieved with a shorter axial stroke movement of the lock rod. The aperture walls may also be angled to allow even greater axial movement of the locking elements, which not only further shortens the lock rod stroke, but can increase the gripping force that the clamping apparatus applies to the tool unit.

  • Patent number: 5658192
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for receiving a rotary body (412) in a centered and axially fixed manner, in particular a grinding wheel, on a supporting part (410) with an axial centering spike (418) which projects in to the central opening (416) of the rotary body (412) and a substantially radial collar (480) adjacent thereto, against which the rotary body (412) may be axially clamped. • Patent number: 5570980
Abstract: A spindle apparatus capable of exhibiting a good interchangeability of a tool holder without any necessity for managing a gap between an end surface of the tool holder and an end surface of a spindle shaft and, besides, obtaining a high tool holding rigidity. Small- and large-diameter portions are formed in the outer surface of the spindle shaft having a taper hole formed in the shaft end. A sleeve formed with a fluid passageway communicating with the outside is fitted, with interferences, to the outer surface thereof. On the other hand, a flange having a diameter larger than a taper shank is provided at a proximal portion of the taper shank of the tool holder. A fluid pressure is applied to the fluid passageway of the sleeve, thereby making the sleeve contact with the flange of the tool holder that is fitted to the spindle shaft. Thereafter, the sleeve is fixed to the spindle shaft by removing the fluid pressure, and the tool holder is supported with a high rigidity.
