  • Publication number: 20090217505
Abstract: The invention relates to a gun rivet and a device for placing said rivet. The gun rivet contains a rivet head (1) with a collar (3) at one end and a rivet tip (6) at the other. The rivet body contains a cavity (7) in the form of a bore in a sleeve section (22). As with other gun rivets, the gun rivet is shot with a percussive-type action and with the aid of its rivet tip into an opening in two sheets (13, 14) that are to be joined together, until the collar comes to rest on the upper face of the upper sheet. A tensile bolt is then introduced into the cavity and is connected to the base (8) of the latter. This can be achieved by resistance welding. The tensile bolt is then drawn until a rivet head is formed on the opposite side of the two sheets. The tensile bolt is then detached from the gun rivet, for example by shearing. The tensile bolt can be re-used to place another rivet.

  • Patent number: 5816761
Abstract: We achieved extended fatigue endurance and high pre-load in a structural blind fastener by combining the best features of screw type and pull type blind fasteners. We replaced fatigue critical details from the shear plane with close tolerance, slip fit, core bolt and outer bolt shanks to obtain the desired structural load paths while retaining anchoring features of screw type fasteners to introduce adequate pre-load. Our fasteners are compatible with currently available blind bolt insertion tooling. The present invention pertains to a lightweight version of the structural blind fastener wherein we set the backside anchor collar with matching threads that engage between the outer sleeve bolt and inner core bolt.

  • Patent number: 5762456
Abstract: A self-tapping, blind setting bolt rivet assembly capable of permanently fastening one or more sheet metal work pieces or the like together while also providing a hollow cylindrical threaded bolt head onto which a nut may be affixed to a means to removably attach other work pieces, components or the like. The rivet assembly comprises a rivet body having a hollow tubular sleeve and a threaded stud separated by an enlarged flattened head. The rivet body surrounds a mandrel comprising a shank which is terminated in a screw tip. This screw tip punctures, spreads, and self-taps an aperture in the work pieces through which the rivet sleeve passes. The mandrel's shank may have a weakened area of reduced diameter adjacent to the screw tip which allows detachment of shaft following application of sufficient axial force to the shank. This application of force sets the rivet by causing a tapered shoulder section of the mandrel to deform the rivet sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5690454
Abstract: A retainer has inner and outer subsections that are hingedly connected. An outer portion is hingedly connected to the outer subsections. The outer subsection rotates on its hinge relative to the outer portion, and axially back towards the inner surface of the wall to contact the wall. The inner subsection extends to a connection with the inner head portion. The inner and outer subsections are in abutting contact adjacent to the hinge. The abutting contact creates a holding force at the point of contact between the hinge and the inner wall. This results in a truss-like configuration that securely retains the retainer in the wall.

  • Patent number: 5599147
Abstract: A blind rivet fastener which has a bulb forming collar that is assembled by sliding the collar down the shank of the fastener stem. The bulb collar is seated adjacent to the head of the stem. The stem has a shoulder and a pull portion that extend through the inner channel of a sleeve. The sleeve, shoulder and stem head are typically inserted into the matching holes of two workpieces. The sleeve has a head located at an accessible side of the workpieces and an opposite chamfered end located at an inaccessible "blind" side of the workpieces. The fastener is installed by holding the sleeve while pulling the shoulder through the sleeve channel. The stem head pushes the bulb collar, which engages the chamfered end of the sleeve. The bulb collar has an inwardly tapered end which bends the sleeve in a radially outward direction. The deformed end and sleeve head secure the sleeve to the workpieces.

Abstract: A fastener adapted to expand into bone has a tubular body having a longitudinal opening therethrough with a stop within the opening. The body has a head at one end and a longitudinal slot extends through the body near the other end to form ribs that expand radially when the body is compressed. A puller projects through the opening in the rivet and has a head that engages the other end to compress the rivet when the puller is pulled through the body. An annular recess is formed in the puller near the head and the other end of the body is crimped into the recess to aid expansion of the ribs. The puller is weakened at a point so that it will break upon continued pulling after the ribs reach a fully expanded state.

  • Patent number: 5350264
Abstract: A blind fastener for fastening panels, especially panels made of composite materials, comprises a fastener body received within aligned openings in the panels and a cylindrical stem passing through the fastener body. The stem has an enlarged stem head spaced from an inner end of the fastener body which projects inwardly beyond the inner surface of the inner panel. A deformable sleeve mounted on the stem between the stem head and the inner end of the fastener body is a two-piece sleeve comprising a forming sleeve and a containment sleeve. The forming sleeve is made of a relatively soft, deformable material, whereas the containment sleeve is made of a relatively hard, nondeformable material. When the stem moves outwardly through the fastener body during setting of the fastener, the forming sleeve deforms to a fully set condition in overlying contact with the inner surface of the inner panel, forming a large bearing area that does not damage the composite material of the panels.
