    Abstract: According to a method for forming packs of flat bags, a continuous line of bags moving in an oriented direction of advance is received. The continuous line of bags is converted into a line of overlapped bags before stacking the latter, and the bags are separated on the receiving table by separating means comprising a separating device. During this operation, a separating device is inserted by a movement in the separating direction perpendicular to the plane of the bags between a preceding bag and a following bag in the overlapped line in such a way that, when the following bag stops against the abutment, it is supported at least partially by the separating means.

    Abstract: An apparatus for placing spacer sticks between layers of lumber is disclosed. The present invention includes an overheads feed system for distributing spacer sticks to a plurality of stick placement modules. Each stick placement module has a plurality of stick placement arms which are articulated to move in three dimensions. After the arms grasp a spacer stick, the deviation of the arms from their normal orientations are used to gauge the suitability of the spacer stick and then to reject the spacer stick if the quality of the spacer stick does not meet specifications. Also, the apparatus of the present invention is modular and can be retrofitted to existing lumber stacking machines.

    Abstract: An apparatus for and method of stacking flexible articles of a non-uniform thickness involves the use of a stacking table including separately movable first and second support surfaces. An actuator moves the stacking table through a range of motion relative to a stationary cam plate. A cam follower is mechanically coupled to the second support surface and engages the cam surface when the stacking table is moved through at least part of the range of motion. When the actuator moves the stacking table and the cam follower engages the cam surface, the second surface is displaced relative to the first support surface. Preferably, the cam plate is repositionable to vary a distance by which the second support surface is displaced relative to the first support surface.

    Abstract: A sheet handling apparatus which stores sheets ejected from an image forming apparatus in a bin, staples the sheets if necessary, takes the stapled or unstapled set of sheets out of the bin and transports the set of sheets up to a large-capacity tray nipping the set of sheets between rollers of a conveying gate to deliver the set of sheets onto the tray. While the conveyer gate is transporting the set of sheets upward, the set of sheets hangs down from the nipped portion, and the hanging-down portion is guided by a guide plate. A limit is set to the number of stapled sets of sheets which can be stacked on the large-capacity tray, and transportation of stapled sets of sheets to the tray by the conveyer gate over the limit is canceled. When a set of sheets is delivered onto the tray, pressing sticks press sets of sheets which have been stacked on the tray.
