Fluid Force On Opposite Face Of Blade Or Blade Support Member Patents (Class 415/106)
  • Patent number: 5061151
Abstract: The problem of minimizing size and weight parameters in an impeller-type centrifugal pump system (10), including a liquid ring priming pump (32), is solved by providing a housing (12) defining a fluid inlet (26). An impeller (16) is rotatably mounted downstream of the inlet on a rotatable shaft (18). A pressure balance chamber (42) is located behind the impeller to provide for thrust balancing of the impeller. A first passage (44) extends directly through the impeller communicating inlet pressure with the balance chamber. The first passage has an inlet forward of the impeller blades. The liquid ring pump is rotatably mounted on the shaft and is located behind the balance chamber. A second passage (46) communicates the inlet pressure in the balance chamber with the liquid ring pump outside the rotating shaft.

  • Patent number: 4915582
Abstract: A rotary turbine fluid pump employs unique configurations of turbine vane receptacle opening and turbine vanes. The turbine vane receptacle is connected to a circumferentially extending fluid path, in which free ends of turbine vanes are inserted for pressurization of the fluid therein. The turbine vane receptacle operation has pair of surfaces opposing and spaced apart to each other. Each surface is radially tapered toward the center at a first inclination rate. Each turbine vane is provided edges opposing the surfaces of the turbine vane receptacle operation. The edges are correspondingly tapered at a second rate which is determined so that the spacing between the surface and the edge is gradually increased toward the rotation center of the turbine. This construction minimizes friction increasing when the pressure balance in floating seal formed between the surface and the edge is destroyed.

  • Patent number: 4867633
Abstract: A centrifugal pump with hydraulic thrust balance and tandem axial seals. The centrifugal pump has an impeller with front and rear axial seals operating in unison to either reduce or increase the size of gaps therebetween. The gaps are of a minimal dimension to minimize leakage. The rear axial seal is located at the tip of the impeller with the front axial seat located either at the impeller eye or radially outwardly thereof. Hydraulic thrust balance is achieved and continuously maintained by axial movement of the impeller shaft and impeller to modulate the gap at the rear axial seal and, thus, control the value of an effective pressure acting on the back side of the impeller whereby an outward thrust force resulting therefrom counterbalances an inward thrust force resulting from pressure acting on the front shroud of the impeller. A clearance at the rear of the impeller communicates with suction pressure through a restricted passage.

  • Patent number: 4820115
Abstract: An improved open impeller for centrifugal compressors or the like that includes a hub portion and a disc portion having front and rear surfaces. A plurality of circumferentially spaced blades are positioned on the front surface of the impeller disc. A plurality of circumferentially spaced vanes are located on the rear suface of the disc and generally located between adjacent ones of the blades. The vanes are elongated and have their chords disposed at an angle relative to a radius of the circle on which the vanes are disposed to generate a pressure preventing gas exiting the blades from passing behind the rear surface of the impeller. Also, the vanes may be angled relative to the rear surface to produce a thrust counteracting the thrust produced by the impeller blades. The arrangement of the vanes is such that rigidity is provided to the impeller disc reducing the vibration of the disc when rotating at high speeds.

Abstract: A centrifugal pump of the magneto coupling type in which an isolation shell separates the pump side from the driver side includes an auxiliary impeller arranged additionally to the pump impeller proper. This allows a decreasing of the pressure in the spaces at the reverse side of the pump impeller and thus a balancing of the thrust forces. This effect can be controlled by control means located in the casing at the outer end of the feeding channels of the auxiliary impeller. This allows the provision of a pump of a simple design in which e.g. the isolation shell can be made with an extremely small wall thickness and in which an open or closed pump impeller can be supported without any thrust generated difficulties.

Abstract: A sealing arrangement is herein disclosed for use in a high energy centrifugal pump and the like wherein a chamber is defined about the discharge portion of the pump wheel which is attached to a shaft to form a rotor which rotates with respect to stationary parts and has limited axial movement as determined by the thrust bearing clearance. An annular seal is disposed operatively about the outside diameter of the pump wheel with sufficient clearance for the pump wheel to clear the seal regardless of the extent of the axial movement of the wheel. The seal acts to retard the shock waves of transient pressure differentials developed across the wheel. the seal further operates to define a dashpot arrangement wherein the wheel comprises a piston which automatically equalizes any pressure differential developed across the wheel and by-passing the seal.

  • Patent number: 4645414
Abstract: A combination vacuum pump, low friction bearing and seal assembly is provided in which a rotor relatively rotatable with respect to a stator has two sets of radially spaced, concentric spiral grooves. As the rotor rotates, one set of grooves forces sufficient ambient air between confronting surfaces of the rotor and stator to keep them axially spaced and provide a low friction bearing. Another set of grooves forces sufficient air from the vessel and through a one-way air exit to evacuate the vessel. A restriction created by the axially spaced confronting surfaces substantially prevents ambient air from moving radially inwardly to the evacuated vessel, as well as trapping the ambient air to maintain the axial spacing. Any ambient air passing through the restriction is dumped back to ambient through the same air exit, thereby keeping the evacuated vessel sealed.
