Abstract: An engine/heat pump is shown. Most of its parts rotate around the same central axis. It comprises two doubly connected chambers. Blades in each chamber substantially rotate with the chamber and may be firmly attached to the walls of the chamber, thus forming a modified centrifugal pump with axial input and discharge. An expandable fluid is rotated outward by one of the pumps and then heat is added for an engine or removed for a heat pump as the fluid is being sent to the outer part of the second pump. The fluid travels toward the center of the second pump, thus impelling the pump in the rotation direction. Then heat is removed for an engine or added for a heat pump as the fluid leaves the second pump and travels back to the first pump near the center of rotation of both pumps. Rotation energy of the fluid is typically much larger than the circulation energy. A modified centrifugal pump with axial discharge having a casing rotating with the blades is also claimed.

  • Patent number: 5096375
Abstract: A mechanical clearance control apparatus operable for controlling the clearance between the rotor blade tips and the casing shroud of a gas turbine engine employs a radial adjustment mechanism. The adjustment mechanism includes an externally threaded hollow adjustment bushing disposed over a screw and rotatably and threadably coupled to an internally threaded bore of a stationary casing-shroud mounting section. Rotation of the bushing relative to the mounting section bore produces axial movement of the bushing relative thereto. An annular shoulder and a snap ring on a screw permit the bushing to rotate relative to the screw and carries the screw along with the axial movement of the bushing. One of several holes in the bushing rim can be aligned with a selected one of a pair of holes in the mounting section and a locking pin inserted in the aligned pair of holes to lock the sleeve to the stationary mounting section.

  • Patent number: 5018942
Abstract: A gear-actuated mechanical clearance control apparatus is operable for controlling the clearance between rotor blade tips and the casing shroud of a gas turbine engine. The apparatus includes a pair of annular rings which extend about the casing shroud, a shroud hanger disposed between the casing and an opening in the casing and between the annular rings, and a shroud segment defining a circumferential portion of the casing shroud and disposed in the casing opening. The apparatus also has an actuating mechanism which includes driven gear sectors on the annular rings which face toward one another and a gear disposed between the annular rings and having a peripheral driving gear sector which intermeshes with the driven gear sectors of the annular rings. Upon rotation of the gear, the annular rings undergo opposite circumferential movement causing radial movement of the shroud hanger and the shroud segment therewith to establish the clearance between the shroud segment and rotor blade outer tips.

  • Patent number: 4916832
Abstract: Device for reversing an air flow in a drying chamber in which the air flow is created by at least one blower. A drum, rotatable about its longitudinal shaft is arranged about the blower or blowers. The drum has apertures on its casing surface to provide an air flow through the drum. The drum extends from the floor of the drying chamber to its roof, or is sealed in another way at its ends. By rotating the drum about its longitudinal shaft between two different positions, a reversal of the direction of the air flow in the drying chamber is achieved in a very simple way, although the blower is stationary and drives the air continuously in the same direction. A heat battery is arranged on the intake side of the blower.

  • Patent number: 4773817
Abstract: The adjustment of clearances at the time of assembly and subsequently during operation of a labyrinth seal lying between the rotor and stator of a turbomachine is effected by radial displacements of a bush radially rigid with an outer pivot pin of each blade of the stator and co-operates with a boss of the casing by means of screw-threads. Such displacements are controlled as a function of a signal provided by a computer which integrates various operational parameters of the turbomachine and acts on a control ring connected by a lever to the said bush. The internal pivot of the blade is rigid with an annular member which carries a layer of abradable material constituting a fixed part of the labyrinth seal. The rotary part of the labyrinth seal is mounted on an opposed part of the rotor. A method for effecting the adjustment of the clearances is also described.
