  • Patent number: 5035587
Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus has a pumping plunger operable by a cam to deliver fuel to an outlet. A spill valve is provided which when open permits fuel to spill from the bore in which the pumping plunger is located. An actuating piston is located in a first cylinder and is coupled to the spill valve and a storage piston is located in a second cylinder connected to the first cylinder. A control valve controls the pressure in the first cylinder and when the pressure is raised the actuating piston lifts the spill valve from the seating and the fuel from the bore can flow into the first cylinder and when the actuating piston is displaced therefrom, into the second cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5012785
Abstract: Fuel delivery valving operatively mounted in an axially extending center bore of a high pressure pump rotor. The valve axially shifts between an open position in which a charge of fuel generated by the pump is transmitted as a pressure wave to a fuel injector nozzle and a closed position in which the pump charging chamber is sealed from the injection line and the injection line is vented to low pressure so that secondary pressure waves reflecting from the injector nozzle will be routed to the low pressure line for dissipation therein rather than rebounding from the delivery valve. This improves engine operation efficiency and eliminates seocndary injection of fuel by the injector nozzle and high hydrocarbon and smoke emissions. One embodiment has a fuel delivery valve operatively mounted in each discharge fitting of a hydraulic head assembly of the fuel injection pump.

Abstract: The present invention is an expander band for use in hydraulic pumps, motors, and hydrostatic transmissions. The band has a plurality of elongated slots located circumferentially which receive slippers attached to pistons. One reduced dimension slot fixes the position of a slipper relative to the expander band while the other slippers move within the elongated slots. The fixed slipper limits the range of movement of the other slippers relative to the band, and thus the slippers avoid abutting the side ends of the elongated slots.

  • Patent number: 4699108
Abstract: A fuel injection pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type includes a rotary distributor member which is biased axially in one direction by a spring and is movable in the opposite direction by fluid pressure in a chamber. The axial setting of the distributor member determines the amount of fuel delivered by the apparatus. Fuel is supplied to the chamber through a supply path including a port and a groove which register intermittently as the distributor member rotates. Fuel is allowed to drain from the chamber through a drain path which includes a further port and a tapered groove defined by the distributor member and an axially adjustable sleeve surrounding the distributor member. The further port and the tapered groove register intermittently and it is arranged that the supply path and the drain path are closed to create a hydraulic lock in the chamber during the time mechanical forces are applied to the distributor member.

  • Patent number: 4624231
Abstract: A fuel injection pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type has a distributor member rotatable within an angularly adjustable sleeve carried in the body of the apparatus. The sleeve is coupled to an angularly adjustable cam ring having internal lobes operable to impart pumping movement to a plunger carried in a bore in the distributor member. The distributor member has a delivery passage connected to the bore for registration with outlets in turn to the sleeve. The distributor member also has a further and restricted passage which registers with the outlet which has just received fuel for the purpose of absorbing pressure waves which may be reflected back to the outlet from the associated injection nozzle. The fact that the sleeve and cam ring are connected to each other means that as timing variation is effected by moving the cam ring angularly the phasing between the outlets, the delivery passage and the further passage remains constant.
