  • Patent number: 7316550
Abstract: A scroll compressor, which allows refrigerant in a compressor chamber to be partially discharged so that frictions generated in frictional surfaces between an orbiting scroll and an Oldham ring and between the Oldham ring and a main frame may be decreased. Also, an upper chamber may be formed on an upper surface thereof and a lower chamber may be formed on a lower surface thereof. An oil supply structure may be provided in a main frame such that lubrication is smoothly performed. Additionally, at least one key may be provided protruding from the lower surface of the Oldham ring. Further, the main frame may include at least one key groove configured to receive the at least one key of the Oldham ring. Additionally, the oil supply groove may be provided separately from and in communication with the at least one key groove.

  • Patent number: 7309220
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a back pressure apparatus for orbiting vane compressors that is capable of reducing excessive axial force applied to an orbiting vane due to high-pressure refrigerant gas introduced to the lower surface of a vane plate of the orbiting vane. The back pressure apparatus comprises a back pressure chamber formed at the upper surface of a main frame, which is brought into tight contact with the lower surface of a vane plate of an orbiting vane, and a low-pressure gas communication part for allowing the back pressure chamber and an inlet port to communicate with each other therethrough. Consequently, the present invention has the effect of preventing excessive friction between the orbiting vane and the inner surface of a cylinder, preventing damage to the orbiting vane compressor due to the friction, and preventing deterioration of performance of the orbiting vane compressor due to the frictional loss.

  • Patent number: 7278832
Abstract: Scroll compressors are provided with vapor injection or by-pass ports that will allow greater flow of refrigerant through the port than was the case in the prior art. The prior art has typically utilized a single injection port having a diameter equal to or slightly larger than the thickness of the scroll wrap. In this way, the scroll wrap is able to prevent or restrict cross-flow leakage from the port from passing between the two compression chambers. However, this single port has also limited the amount of refrigerant that can be returned. In one embodiment, the present invention utilizes a plurality of ports generally spaced along the length of the wrap such that cross-flow can still be prevented while providing a greater cross-sectional flow area into or out of the compression chambers. In another embodiment, the several ports may be replaced by a single elongated port.

Abstract: A scroll compressor has a recess cut into a surface of a crankcase or an orbiting scroll while there is no material removed next to the seals that seal refrigerant in the back chamber located between the orbiting scroll and crankcase. Because there is no material removed next to the seals, the gap between the orbiting scroll and crankcase remains intact in the sealing area and the seals continue to operate properly preventing the refrigerant leakage through the gap. In this case, the dimensional tolerances of the crankcase and orbiting scroll surfaces need only be tightly controlled in the area adjacent to the seals. The surface areas away from the seals do not require tight tolerance control, thus manufacturing and assembly is simplified and possibility of interference due to small gap between orbiting scroll and crankcase is avoided. In the preferred embodiment, the recess is introduced into the back chamber surface area of the crankcase.

Abstract: A scroll compressor includes a protection device that has a valve movable between a position blocking flow from the back pressure chamber into the suction chamber, and a position allowing such flow. The valve is movable dependent on an oil temperature. Under adverse conditions, the oil will reach higher temperatures and the valve will open allowing flow of refrigerant from the back pressure chamber into the suction chamber. This refrigerant will likely be at an elevated temperature, and will assist the heated oil in moving a motor protection switch associated with the motor to shut down the motor. Moreover, by relieving the back pressure chamber, the two scroll members are allowed to move out of contact with each other, thereby reducing potential damage due to the adverse conditions.

Abstract: Scroll compressors include a tap for communicating a compressed refrigerant to a back pressure chamber to resist a separating force. A restriction is placed within this tap to slow build-up of the back pressure chamber at start-up. Further, the restriction smoothes out any fluctuations in the back pressure force as the pressure in the compression chamber from which the refrigerant is tapped may fluctuate.

Abstract: An apparatus for preventing a rotation of a scroll compressor in a reverse direction of compressing fluid is described herein. The apparatus comprises an eccentric portion of a rotational shaft that is coupled with an orbiting scroll meshed with a fixed scroll and a slide bush interposed between the eccentric portion and the orbiting scroll. The eccentric portion has a sloping plane at an outer periphery surface thereof and the sloping plane thereof contacts with a sloping plane formed at an inner periphery of the slide bush when the scroll compressor is driven in a direction opposite to a driving direction of compressing fluid. At this time, an operating angle between the contacted sloping surfaces and a reference line become large enough for a friction between the two scrolls to increase, thereby, a reverse rotation of the compressor can be prevented.

Abstract: A self-modulating scroll compressor includes a pair of valves. A first valve moves to a low capacity position when the pressure differential is below a predetermined amount. A second valve moves to a low capacity position when the suction pressure is above a predetermined amount. Low capacity operation will only occur when both valves are open. The present invention thus provides a scroll compressor design with the ability to self-modulate and control the conditions under which low capacity operation occurs based upon two criteria.

  • Patent number: RE39346
Abstract: A scroll compressor lubrication system includes a number of embodiments where lubricating oil impinges off surfaces adjacent to the orbiting scroll. The impinged oil creates a lubrication mist, which is deposited on the back surface of the orbiting scroll baseplate. The surface of the orbiting scroll onto which the oil has been deposited rubs against and carries the oil to the back chamber seals and to the back chamber. The seals thus are being lubricated by oil transfer from the back surface of the orbiting scroll to the seals. Sine the oil is deposited on the surface of the orbiting scroll, while it is exposed to suction pressure, only minimal pressurization of oil is required. Thus, there is no damage to the back pressure chamber seals due to over pressurization.
