Abstract: Apparatus for preparing spherical, submicronic, monodispersed, and non-agglomerated particles of metal oxides by reacing with steam a gaseous stream containing an aerosol of liquid particles of a hydrolyzable metal compound. The apparatus is characterized in that into a duct, in which an inert gas stream containing vapors of a hydrolyzable metal compound flows, there is fed through a nozzle a cold inert gas stream, the temperatures and flows of the two gaseous streams being such as to establish in the duct a temperature lower than the condensation temperature of the metal compound; the mixed gaseous streams having a turbulent flow in the duct, with a Reynolds number equal to or higher than 1800. At the duct outlet, the aerosol of metal compound liquid particles, which has formed in the duct, is caused to react with steam, wherefore solid particles of hydrated metal oxide form, which are subsequently calcined to the oxide.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for producing large particles of material from gas, or gases, containing the material (e.g., silicon from silane) in a free-space reactor comprised of a tube (20) and controlled furnace (25). A hot gas is introduced in the center of the reactant gas through a nozzle (23) to heat a quantity of the reactant gas, or gases, to produce a controlled concentration of seed particles (24) which are entrained in the flow of reactant gas, or gases. The temperature profile (FIG. 4) of the furnace is controlled for such a slow, controlled rate of reaction that virtually all of the material released condenses on seed particles and new particles are not nucleated in the furnace. A separate reactor comprised of a tube (33) and furnace (30) may be used to form a seed aerosol which, after passing through a cooling section (34) is introduced in the main reactor tube (34) which includes a mixer (36) to mix the seed aerosol in a controlled concentration with the reactant gas or gases.

Abstract: Aerosols such as a carbon black containing smoke are subjected to an auto-preseparation by passing the aerosol or smoke through loose particles collected and accumulated and only thereafter passing the aerosol or smoke through a separator such as a filter bag. This changes the characteristic of the aerosol in either reducing the total content of solids or increasing the average particle size of the solids in the aerosol or achieving both of these features. Thereby the load on the downstream separator and the capacity of the separator, e.g. a carbon black filter house, is substantially reduced.

  • Patent number: 4550013
Abstract: Feed oils are injected axially into a carbon black reactor in a manner which slows buildup of deposits in the reactor. This is accomplished utilizing a nozzle configuration for injecting the feed oil into the carbon black reactor so that deposit-forming contaminants are directed away from the walls of the reactor. In one aspect, the feed oil is separated into two streams, one stream is contaminant-rich and the other is substantially contaminant-free. The contaminant-rich stream is fed into the reactor surrounded by the substantially contaminant-free stream. In another embodiment, a feed nozzle for a carbon black reactor is formed by a first feed tube surrounded coaxially by a second feed tube. The first feed tube can be utilized to inject contaminant-rich feed oil into the reactor. The second feed tube can be utilized to inject contaminant-free oil into the reactor in a manner such that it surrounds the contaminant-rich stream.
