Abstract: The present invention relates to development of bioactive glass/glass-ceramic composition that are able to promote a fast deposition layer of carbonated hydroxyapatite upon immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) for time periods as short as one hour. Such composition might include fluorides, and a variety of oxides (or their precursor compounds), such as Na2O—Ag2O—SrO—CaO—MgO—ZnO—P2O5—SiO2—Bi2O3—B2O3—CaF2, be prepared by the melt route or by the sol-gel process, with the specific composition and the preparation route selected according to the intended functionalities, which can present controlled biodegradation rate and bactericidal activity. The powders derived from glass melts purred in cold water (frits) may completely densify by sintering at temperatures up to 800° C. without devitrification, resulting in bioglass compacts with high flexural strength (˜85 MPa). The bioactive glass powders prepared by sol-gel densify at lower temperatures due to their higher specific surface area and reactivity.

  • Patent number: 8703208
Abstract: The invention disclosed a novel mesoporous silica-based xerogel and its use in hemorrhage control. The mesoporous silica-based xerogel material has tunable mesopores (1-50 nm), high specific surface area (100-1400 m2/g), macroscopical morphology (powder, film, disc, column, etc.) and adjustable compositions (SiO2, CaO and P2O5, etc.) as well as good biodegradation. The mesoporous silica-based xerogels herein effectively promote the blood clotting under various conditions including slow and severe hemorrhage, even at the blood oozing site of bone defect. Meanwhile, the networks of silica-based xerogel with good elastic and mechanic properties, formed by adsorbing a large amount of water, can modulate the cell behavior and tissue growth, and thus promote the wound healing. Additionally, due to the mesoporous structure, the materials have the potential to load drug, thrombin and bioactive factors, which is favorable for the therapeutical efficacy.

Abstract: Nutritional compositions having the potential to reduce metabolic acid load and methods of making and using the nutritional compositions are provided. In an embodiment, the present disclosure provides methods of selecting and administering nutritional compositions to patients. The methods may include modifications to calculating a metabolic acid potential of a nutritional composition, calculating a base content of a nutritional composition and subtracting the base content from the acid content to determine a potential renal acid load (“PRAL”) value. The present disclosure also provides computer implemented processes for predicting PRAL values.

  • Patent number: 8445030
Abstract: Antiseptic compounds that act as persistent and fast acting antiseptics and disinfectants. The base of these antiseptic actions is CaF2 as the persistent part, preventing the colonization of tissue and nonliving surfaces with microorganisms through the targeted on-demand release of fluorine ions. For fighting heavy contamination and invasion of transient microbes through new application of the solution, fast acting alcohols and toxic solutions have been added in small percentage. They act fast and evaporate fast, leaving the natural protection of skin undamaged and coated with a persistent antiseptic.

Abstract: The bone graft system comprises a solid inorganic component, which is bone graft material, and a hydrogel. The hydrogel contains >2 ppm of silicon ions, calculated as parts by weight of Si per million of the aqueous component of the hydrogel. Preferably, the solid inorganic component comprises hydroxyapatite or a silicon-containing hydroxyapatite, and may be a silicon-containing hydroxyapatite having a Ca/P ratio in the range 2.05 to 2.55 and a Ca/(P+Si) molar ratio less than 1.66. Bone healing is promoted by delivery of silicon ion release from the hydrogel and by the solid inorganic component stimulating cell behavior.
