Patent number: 5382401Abstract: A stabilizer guide for guiding a stabilizer, having a material characteristic of fraying, through an extrusion die without fraying and melting the stabilizer during the extrusion of a thermoplastic body molding of a motor vehicle. The stabilizer guide is made up of two halves that join to form a parting line and a slot by which to guide the stabilizer through the extrusion die. The slot extends along the entire length of the stabilizer guide and is located in a different plane than the parting line of the stabilizer guide. By having the slot in a different plane than the parting line, the stabilizer is prohibited from wandering into the parting line. Patent number: 5372757Abstract: A loose tube element including a plastic sheath containing a grease-like material and an optical fiber or bundle of optical fibers or a ribbon of optical fibers is pulled from an extruder crosshead through a cooling bath and around a constant speed capstan. The loose tube element travels around the constant speed capstan a number of times and as it exits the capstan it is subject to a tensile force provided by a variable torque control capstan. The tensile force causes elongation of the plastic sheath, causes the optical fiber to be pulled taut and thereby controls the ratio of fiber length to sheath length within the loose tube element. While subjected to the tensile force, the element is subsequently cooled, causing the elongation of the plastic sheath to become permanent and thus fixing the fiber-to-sheath length ratio.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1993Date of Patent: December 13, 1994Assignee: Tensor Machinery Ltd.Inventor: Randy G. Patent number: 5238633Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming an extruded plastic lumbar product from a commingled plastic waste feed stock. The apparatus generally includes an extruder portion and a forming portion. The extruder portion includes a compound extruder which compresses and melts the waste product by a sudden transition within a constant pitch conveyor. Patent number: 5234324Abstract: The present invention provides an extruder for highly foamed plastic material for coating a central conductor of a coaxial insulated cable with an insulator made of a mixture of a plastic material, preferably polyethylene, and an inert gas, such as nitrogen gas, to serve as a foaming agent. An inert gas is introduced approximately halfway down the extruder through a lead-in portion. At the lead-in portion of the extruder is a vent portion wherein the screw is provided with a plurality of stirring blades extending radially from the screw toward the inner surface of the extruder. A molding device, having an open mold cavity engages the carrier member such that the carrier member acts as a portion of the mold. A contour forming device can be used to form raised contours in said carrier member prior to the insertion of said shanks at said shank insertion device. A feeder mechanism is provided for drawing the carrier member through the contour forming device, the shank insertion device, and the molding device.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1991Date of Patent: March 10, 1992Assignee: YKK CorporationInventors: Tim H. Patent number: 5092950Abstract: A molding apparatus and method are provided for molding hollow articles. Resin impregnated fibers are passed through a mold cavity as defined by a heated die and around a mandrel which extends through the mold cavity. The mandrel is stabilized by a mandrel stabilizer fixedly positioned downstream from the inlet end of the die. The mandrel stabilizer includes a plurality of elongated members spaced around the mandrel, wherein each elongated member has an end in contact with the outer surface of the mandrel.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1990Date of Patent: March 3, 1992Assignee: Phillips Petroleum CompanyInventors: Kevin J. Patent number: 5091036Abstract: Apparatus for pultruding thermoplastic, resin-impregnated, fibrous substructures heats the substructures to a temperature just below the melting temperature of the resin. The heated substructures are then simultaneously pulled through a passage to conform them to a desired cross section. At least a portion of the perimeter of this passage is formed by a wave guide. The wave guide is vibrated at ultrasonic frequency in a predetermined direction so as to direct the ultrasonic vibration into the substructures within the passage. The application of the ultrasonic vibration stimulates the flow of the resin in the heated substructures. Pressure is applied to the flowing substructures within the passage to consolidate them into an integral structure conforming to the chosen profile. The ultrasonic vibration at low power input does result in some heat transfer to the profile, but the flow rates of the resin exemplify an increase in flow far greater than expected in relation to the temperature increase.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1989Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Inventor: Scott R. Patent number: 5084221Abstract: A twisted FRP structure having sufficient strength and flexibility is produced by providing a rod member disposed centrally and twist a plurality of side strands twisted around the rod member in the same direction at a predetermined pitch. At least the side strand includes a composite strand having an FRP element from by impregnating fibers with an uncured thermosetting resin and a thermoplastic coating on such FRP element, the thermosetting resin being cured after the side strands are twisted around the rod member. The twisting pitch is not less than 25 times the outside diameter of the FRP element in the side strand.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1989Date of Patent: January 28, 1992Assignee: Ube-Nitto Kasei Co., Ltd.Inventors: Shigehiro Matsuno, Kenji Kozuka, Kazuo Yasuda, Minoru Naito

Patent number: 5069850Abstract: Coextrusion apparatus for varying the outer profile of a generally tubular extrudate formed by merging inner and outer streams of elastomeric material by varying the size of the annular outer extrusion die opening by an axially moveable die ring which varies the flow of the outer stream of elastomeric material which is deposited on the outer surface of the tubular extrudate. The die ring is formed on the end of a hydraulically moveable piston and is axially slideably moved along and is located concentrically about the tubular extrudate. A first annular tapered surface of the die ring moves along a similar tapered surface of a fixed conical-shaped die pin to vary the size of the outer extrusion orifice formed therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1990Date of Patent: December 3, 1991Assignee: Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc.Inventors: Dale A. Patent number: 5064364Abstract: An apparatus is provided for the continuous coating of cylindrical workpieces with a mixture of rubber or thermoplastic plastics material. The arrangement includes an extrusion device, a coating head and a flow channel, which connects the extrusion device to the coating head. The coating head includes a hollow barrel, having a rotatable sleeve-shaped material distributor coaxially disposed therein. One or more conveyor flights are helically disposed on the periphery of the distributor. The discharge opening of the flow channel into the coating head end has a dimension corresponding to an axial pitch length of the flights on the periphery of the distributor.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1990Date of Patent: November 12, 1991Assignee: Hermann Berstorff Maschinenbau GmbHInventor: Horst Muller-Erwig
