Patent number: 4613471Abstract: A system and method for the control of the density of extruded foam controls foaming based on the volume per unit time of extrudate being formed. A gear pump controls the flow of melt to the die. The pump speed provides an accurate measure of the volume per unit time of melt moving to the die. The speed and cross-sectional dimensions of the extrudate are measured to determine the volume per unit time of the extrudate. Since the unfoamed melt density times the volume per unit time of the unfoamed melt being delivered to the die is equal to the density of the foamed extrudate times its volume per unit time, a ratio of the density of foamed extrudate to unfoamed melt can be determined from the two volume per unit time calculations. Once the ratio for an appropriate foam density is determined empirically, density-affecting characteristics of the extruder can be controlled to bring the calculated ratio towards the desired ratio.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1984Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Assignee: Harrel, IncorporatedInventor: Holton E. Patent number: 4583930Abstract: An apparatus and method for continuously producing at a constant flow rate a strip of dough of constant dimensions by controlling the speed of a feed conveyor assembly when the dough is transferred from it onto a constant-speed conveyor. Dough is weighed and fed at speeds inversely proportional to the weighed measurements and the transferred dough is defined by a cooperative action of two constant-speed conveyors, defining members and a roller mechanism to define the dimensions of the dough strip.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1985Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Inventor: Torahiko Hayashi

Patent number: 4557882Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for equalizing the density distribution of pressed wood panels manufactured from adhesive coated bulk material. A bottom belt hopper has an outlet, the width of which is identical with the spreading width for the pressed wood panels being manufactured. Devices installed below the bottom belt hopper transport the bulk material as adhesive coated chip material onto a forming belt. Density deviations existing in the bulk material when it is removed from the bottom belt hopper are determined and correspondingly eliminated. If required, a density profile for a finished pressed wood panel is provided when the bulk material is taken from the bottom belt hopper.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1983Date of Patent: December 10, 1985Assignee: Carl Schenck AG.Inventor: Dieter Arnold

Patent number: 4514812Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the average thickness (T.sub.1) of a film lamina of thermoplastic, dielectric material having a known density (D.sub.1) and coextruded at a variable extrusion rate with a foam lamina of similar thermoplastic material having a thickness (T.sub.2) and the density of (D.sub.2) to form a thermoplastic laminate is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a first gauge for sensing the thickness of the laminate and for providing a caliper signal (C) corresponding to the thickness sensed and a second gauge for sensing the mass/unit-area of the laminate and for providing a mass signal (M) corresponding to the mass/unit-area sensed. The apparatus further comprises a third gauge for sensing a response to the dielectric material and its distribution in the laminate and for providing a dielectric signal (W) corresponding to the response sensed.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1982Date of Patent: April 30, 1985Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventors: Peter S. Patent number: 4368165Abstract: Method of regulating the throughput of a roll press having press rollers, a variable-speed drive motor for said press rollers and a feed device having a controllable throughput. Both the speed of the drive motor and also the throughput of the feed device are regulated automatically in two control modes which succeed one another from time to time. During the first control mode, under nominal loading, the roller speed is increased until the actual loading falls below the nominal loading; at less than the nominal loading the feed throughput is increased until the nominal loading has been attained, and after a condition has been reached in which the nominal loading has not been attained by increasing the throughput, the regulation is changed over to the second control mode.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1980Date of Patent: January 11, 1983Assignee: Maschinenfabrik Koopern GmbH & Co.
