  • Patent number: 4786452
Abstract: In a method of manufacturing sheets of highly wear-resistant plastics material, particularly for manufacturing covers subjected to wear, such as, for example, belts, straps, shoe soles or the like, the behavior of the sheets, particularly as far as suppleness, wear-resistance and inexpensiveness in the production are concerned, is to be significantly improved over known sheets of leather or rubber. The blanks manufactured from such sheets are to have the same properties. According to the invention, sheets are manufactured in a high-pressure casting method from a mixture of polyol and a filter portion of up to 30% with the addition of isocyanate, chalk being particularly used as filler.

  • Patent number: 4743188
Abstract: A mold assembly for manufacturing composite plastic products includes a mold cavity part and a lid, which is joined to form a cavity for foam precursors. The precursors expand in the cavity in a known manner to fill the cavity with a suitable layer of foamed material, such as foamed urethane. The mold cavity supports an exterior shell and the lid supports an insert for reinforcing a finished composite product. A sleeve is integrally formed on the preformed shell and it in turn is located within an access port formed through wall of the cavity part to define a slideway for receipt of a pour head extension. The extension is selectively clamped and unclamped with respect to the shell sleeve by an inflatable seal clamp which is formed as an annular ring with a pressurizable passage connected to a source of selectively applied pressure.

  • Patent number: 4714575
Abstract: A polyurethane RIM method has two mixheads. Reactants are brought to each mixhead and are supplied as separate streams to two spaced cavities in a mold having a pre-formed porous mat separating the two cavities. One stream contains an isocyanate, polyol, chain extender and crosslinker selected to have a very low viscosity and which reacts to produce a high modulus armature or load bearing member. The other stream contains a polyol and isocyanate with additives that have relatively high viscosity to produce a semi-rigid polyurethane foam. At each mixhead the proportions of ingredients are controlled to give a desired isocyanate index to control the flex modulus and other properties of the loading bearing member and foam molded components of the product. The low viscosity material penetrates the porous mat to reinforce it and the porosity of the mat prevents the high viscosity material from entering the armature cavity so as to reduce the load capacity of the finished product.

Abstract: Articles made by the reaction injection molding process obtain a reduced residence time in the mold, hence increasing the production rate, by choosing processing and material parameters according to the inventive method. This method makes use of material parameters and processing conditions, including temperature and cavity shape for determining the viscosity of prepolymer material as it solidifies in the cavity. This information is used to optimize fluid injection rates, temperature of the fluid or cavity wall, choice of reactive fluid, or shape of the cavity. Articles having more complex geometries than previously obtained can be produced when the cavity filling is mathematically simulated according to the present procedure, typically by means of a computer. This can ensure against blockage of critical passages in the cavity, polymer degradation, etc.

  • Patent number: 4443396
Abstract: A mould and method for the manufacture of a length of plastic tube within which a reinforcing wire coil is embedded, the toothed-belt-like inner side of the tube being covered by a fabric cover, the mould comprising a mould core having axial teeth, tooth notches therebetween and a mould sleeve spaced therearound. The mould core, over which the sleeve-shaped fabric cover is first of all placed, whereupon the wire coil is wound thereon, forms, with the mould sleeve, a mould cavity having the shape of a cylindrical ring, the plastic being introduced axially into the mould cavity from one end. At a face end the mould core has an non-toothed mould core portion which projects axially beyond the end of the teeth and has a holding surface, the diameter of which is reduced down to the diameter of the tooth notches.

  • Patent number: 4439386
Abstract: Vacuum injection molding designed for manufacturing solid plastics. Elimination of gases from the liquid resins gives polymers which are more dimensionally stable, mechanically stronger, and more resistant to thermooxidative action. Among liquid resin systems like allylics, epoxies, polyesters and so on, the polyurethanes belong to systems which are sensitive not only to reactive gases but also to the moisture absorbed. In the vacuum injection molding, a vacuum system is connected to reactant chambers, metering devices, mixing chambers, and molds. To produce solid polyurethane bodies, polyol and a polyisocyanate or similar reactants are provided in each of the reaction chambers and are flowed through metering devices into a mixing chamber by gravity flow or by pressure differential. The system is designed such that the reactants are kept from moisture and air to avoid formation of bubbles and microbubbles in the polymer bodies produced by the mixture of the reactants.

  • Patent number: 4437257
Abstract: A fishing lure having a minnow-shaped foamed plastic body and a one-piece wire located in the central longitudinal vertical plane of the body. The wire has a nose loop at the forward end of the body, a body loop at the lower mid-section of the body, and a tail loop at the rear end of the body. Treble hooks are connected with rings to the body and tail loops. A generally flat lip projects forwardly and downwardly from the nose section of the body. The body is made with a mold assembly having two plates with a plurality of body cavities and loop grooves for supporting the wire along the longitudinal central plane of each cavity. The mold assembly has a plastic material inlet passage leading to the nose section of each cavity and a vent passage open to the tail sections of each cavity. A gun is used to pressure inject plastic materials into the inlet passage which reacts in the body cavity to form the foamed plastic body.

  • Patent number: 4430287
Abstract: Method and apparatus for molding polymeric materials using the reaction injection mixing (RIM) technique of combining two or more chemically reactive components immediately prior to their introduction into a mold. The invention is more particularly adapted to RIM molding of polyamide (nylon) type polymers, but is also useful for urethane polymers. In either case the polymers may be of the unfilled or of the reinforced type. Modification of conventional RIM technique is made to meet higher component temperature conditions required for nylon molding as compared to urethane polymers, for example. A characterizing feature of the invention is the employment of an attempering "oil tracer" system comprising casings and jackets enclosing the flow paths of each of the several reactive components, and the flow therethrough of a temperature-controlled oil or other fluid medium in heat-exchange but non-fluid communication with the reactive components.
