Abstract: The present invention provides a food preservation system that includes an absorbent food pad that has absorbent material to absorb exuded liquids from a food product, and has an oxygen scavenging system to modify the atmosphere in the food package. Also described is a method of using the absorbent food pad to enhance appearance of the food product and extend shelf life.

Association of destination indicia with at least one flexible material of which a flexible container is to be assembled, prior to, during, or subsequent to assembly and/or filling of a product volume of the flexible container facilitates timely sorting and delivery of the flexible container to an intended destination.

Abstract: Methods and systems for grouping, recovering, and processing ice and water derived therefrom obtained from an ice source, i.e., a glacier, ice sheet, ice cap, etc., are described herein, and in particular, the conveyance thereof in a non-rigid, water-impermeable device, to facilitate water derived from the ice, having specific characteristics, to be traded, stored, conveyed, or transported according to its specific characteristics.

Abstract: Disclosed is a closure liner composition comprising a mixture (or blend) of a thermoplastic polymer, an oxygen barrier polymer, and a particulate oxygen scavenging material. The oxygen barrier polymer preferably comprises polyisobutylene. The particulate oxygen scavenging material preferably is selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal salt of sulfite, ascorbate, isoascorbate, and a mixture of two or more of these materials. The closure liner composition may be used to fabricate a liner for a closure (e.g., a metal crown used to cap a bottle) that provides superior oxygen reduction properties and improved shelf life.

Abstract: The flanged container for a dairy product or similar food composition is provided with a hollow body and a generally planar annular flange connected to the top of the body, the flange having outer straight side edges and an inner edge defining a circular upper opening of the container. The body has a planar bottom and a lower portion tapering from a generally cylindrical upper portion toward the bottom in a curved manner. The lower portion has a height h1 in some embodiments not less than 14 mm and the ratio h1/H is less than 2:5 where H is the height of the container. Several identical containers can be grouped in a pack with breakable junctions at the outer straight side edges.

The closed-shape has slots proximate each open end that interact with compression tabs on the lock/release plug. A center stop assists in aligning the compression tabs with the slots. Abstract: The invention relates to a method for reducing the concentration of amines and salts thereof, wherein the amines have the general chemical formula I R1R2R3N and the salts have the formula II R1R2R3N—H, wherein the amines and salts thereof exist in aqueous solution or aqueous suspension and are brought into contact with clinoptilolitic or clinoptilolite-containing mixtures. The method itself is suitable for use in food preparation and in the manufacture of foods. The inventive idea of reducing the concentration of amines and salts thereof is also useful in the manufacture of medical products for absorbing and for removing amines from the intestinal tract or the skin area of humans and animals.

The substrate can be paperboard, and the copper can be a copper salt, such as copper sulfate. The packaging material may be provided by causing adherence between the substrate and the antimicrobial agent, such as by coating the substrate with the antimicrobial agent. Then, the packaging material may be cut into sheets. The sheets may be formed into cartons or other suitable packages.

Abstract: Disclosed are nutritional compositions comprising a peroxide-treated aseptic package and a nutritional liquid contained therein, wherein the nutritional liquid comprises beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) and at least one of fat, carbohydrate, and protein. The HMB provides a buffering effect in the nutritional liquid to thus minimize an acidic pH shift that is prevalent in aseptically sterilized packages, and thus helps maintain product stability over time.

When the sterile chamber is pressured with a pressurizing fluid, the pressure in the sterile chamber will increase. When the predetermined pressure is exceeded in the sterile chamber, the second frangible seal opens forming a fluid path between the sterile chamber and the content chamber. In this manner, the pressurized fluid can flow from the sterile chamber.

Abstract: A reusable food product package that is initially provided with a polymeric, gas-impermeable film overwrapping that seals the seam of engagement and sufficient portions of the top surface of the lid and the outer surface of the compartment so as to remain in place during shipping. The film may form a two-piece container around the lid and compartment. In particular, respiring foods may be packaged with an oxygen absorber and/or a CO2 absorber on the food side of the film for freshness. Polypropylene may be used to render the food visible and adapted for reuse. Packaged foods and a method of packaging using the reusable food product package are also disclosed.

The container comprises a preformed deformable body defining a filling cavity which body has an opening and an integral planar circumferential rim surrounding said opening. The opening is closed by a cover sheet which is sealed to the circumferential rim by a circumferential sealing seam. The circumferential rim has a dispensing part which is covered by the cover sheet. A dispensing passage is formed between the dispensing part and the cover sheet. At the location of the dispensing passage is provided a weakened sealing seam portion, such that upon pressurizing the content of the container, the weakened sealing seam portion breaks and substance flows out of the container through the dispensing passage. The dispensing part is flat and the dispensing passage for the substance is defined by the cover sheet sealed to the flat dispensing part by at least two outwardly directed sealing seams.

Abstract: The present invention provides a peelable microwavable food package capable of absorbing undesired liquids released from packaged food products during storage, display, or heating, including microwave cooking. The present invention provides a peelably sealed microwavable food package in any packaging format including pouches, flow-wrap, horizontal form fill seal (HFFS), vertical form fill seal (VFFS), gas-flushed, vacuum-packaged, sealed rigid plastic containers and the like.

Abstract: Packaging of bananas in containers, for example polyethylene bags, having designed permeabilities to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and ethylene. The bags preferably include a gas-permeable membrane comprising (1) a microporous film, and (2) a polymeric coating on the microporous film. The containers enable storage and/or ripening of bananas under controlled conditions. Using the new containers, bananas can be ripened while they are being transported, or in conventional ripening rooms without opening the containers in which they have been transported, or after they have left a ripening room. In addition, bananas can be preserved in a satisfactory ripened state for longer periods of time.
