Abstract: An efficient biomass fractionating system for an energy pulse crop is provided. Pulses include, e.g., peas, beans, and lentils. A method and ecosystem model applies a premium utilization to each fraction of a pulse crop so that no fraction is treated as waste. The methods may also be applied to other alternative crops, such as chestnut seeds, banana and 408 peel, and taro root. One example method removes a protein fraction first, as a food source, before using the remaining fractions to produce energy products, such as ethanol or methane, increasing the efficiency of the entire fractionating process. The fractionating method enables an ecosystem, in which pulses grow inexpensively on low-grade land or under poor conditions providing a cash crop food, energy, and chemical components. In a farm co-op model, the pulse crop provides sustainability as participants inexpensively produce protein, ethanol, and industrial chemical components.

Abstract: A process for the fractionation of valuable fractions from cereal brans (e.g. wheat, barley and oat brans, and rice polish) is described. In particular, this invention describes a two step process, in which the said bran is first subjected to a combination of enzymatic treatment and wet milling, followed by sequential centrifugation and ultrafiltration, which aims at physically separating the main bran factions, i.e. insoluble phase (pericarp and aleurone layer), germ-rich fraction, residual endosperm fraction and soluble sugars. A second step consists of fractionating cereal brans substantially free of soluble compounds, hence insoluble phase from the above-mentioned first step, by enzymatic treatment with xylanases and/or beta-glucanase and wet milling, followed by sequential centrifugation and ultrafiltration, which aims at physically separating the main fractions, i.e.

Abstract: The present invention relates to phytases having at least 76% identity to a phytase derived from Hafnia alvei and comprises at least one modification in the amino acid sequence thereof. These phytase variants have modified, preferably improved, properties, such as, reduced protease sensibility, preferably they exhibit improved properties in respect of thermal performance, such as heat-stability (temperature stability, thermostability), steam stability, pelleting stability and/or temperature profile; and/or protease stability, in particular pepsin stability, pH profile, specific activity, substrate specificity, performance in animal feed (such as an improved release and/or degradation of phytate), susceptibility to glycation, and/or glycosylation pattern. The invention also relates to DNA encoding these phytases, methods of their production, as well as the use thereof, e.g., in animal feed and animal feed additives.

Abstract: A method for producing a dehydrated potato product and products incorporating the dehydrated potato product. The method includes macerating uncooked whole potatoes to form a slurry. The resultant slurry is then optionally decanted to remove excess liquid. Then the slurry is cooked to form a potato mash. The potato mash is then chilled which provides an opportunity to retrograde the starch as well as reduce the mash cohesiveness. The mash is then dehydrated to form a dehydrated potato product. Throughout various stages of processing, additives can be incorporated to adjust the texture, adhesiveness, taste, color, and shape retention of the final food product. The additives may be incorporated during the slurry phase wherein they are more readily absorbed. Further, additives may also be incorporated which reduce undesirable puffing.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for preparing a soft vegetable material which is suitably used for the production of a food or a meal for, in particular, the aged persons and which holds the shape of a particular ingredient of the food. The method comprises the steps of: (1) freezing a vegetable material and then thawing the frozen vegetable material to thus form a thawed vegetable material; (2) immersing the thawed vegetable material in a dispersion containing a pectin-decomposition enzyme or a cellulose-decomposition enzyme under reduced pressure; and (3) subjecting the vegetable material, which has been immersed in the dispersion and then thawed, to a heat-treatment at a temperature for a time sufficient for deactivating the pectin-decomposition enzyme or a cellulose-decomposition enzyme. Moreover, the thawing treatment in the foregoing step (1) may likewise be carried out simultaneous with the step of the enzyme-impregnation treatment under reduced pressure.
