Abstract: Methods and systems for cleaning, coating and sealing leaks in existing pipes, in a single operation. A piping system can be cleaned in one pass by dry particulates forced and pulled by air throughout the piping system by a generator and a vacuum. Pipes can be protected from water corrosion, erosion and electrolysis, extending the life of pipes such as copper, steel, lead, brass, cast iron piping and composite materials. Coatings can be applied to pipes having diameters up to approximately 6?. Leak sealants of at least approximately 4 mils thick can cover insides of pipes, and can include novel mixtures of fillers and epoxy materials, and viscosity levels. A positive pressure can be maintained within the pipes during applications. Piping systems can be returned to service within approximately 96 hours.

  • Patent number: 8394464
Abstract: A method of lining tubing within a wellbore comprises applying a polymerisable fluid composition containing a photoinitiator to the interior surface of that tubing and initiating polymerisation of the composition by exposing it to actinic radiation, suitably light or ultraviolet with wavelength 250 to 800 nm. The composition is preferably stable against heat but polymerises quickly when exposed to the actinic radiation. The composition may be spread onto the tubing and exposed to actinic radiation as soon as it has been spread into a layer, suitably with a tool which skims the tubing surface with applicator pads for dispensing and spreading the composition, immediately followed by exposing the spread composition to actinic radiation. A second option is that the composition is provided as a sleeve which is expanded against the tubing, exposure to actinic radiation preferably then being achieved using light guides or light emitting diodes within the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 8394197
Abstract: Enhanced corrosion resistance is achieved in a coating by using a germanium-containing precursor and hollow cathode techniques to form a first layer directly on the surface of a workpiece, prior to forming an outer layer, such as a layer of diamond-like carbon (DLC). The use of a germanium or germanium-carbide precursor reduces film stress and enables an increase in the thickness of the subsequently formed DLC. Germanium incorporation also reduces the porosity of the layer. In one embodiment, a cap layer containing germanium is added after the DLC in order to further reduce the susceptibility of the coating to chemical penetration from the top.

Abstract: Liquid loading, corrosion and scaling in an oilfield tubular, such as a production tubing in a natural gas production well, is inhibited by treating the inner surface of the oilfield tubular (4,24) with a hydrophobic or other coating or lining which inhibits creation of a liquid film and promotes liquid droplet flow alongside said inner surface.

Abstract: A method for adjusting the coolant consumption within actively cooled components is produced. The components include an interior with at least one duct with different regions which have different cross sections of flow. A greater increase in the wall thickness is produced in the region having the smaller cross section of flow by a first diffusion process and a lesser increase in the wall thickness is produced in the region having the larger cross section of flow by a second diffusion process which is different from the first. By using different diffusion coatings in a component, it is possible to adjust the flow of coolant through a component in a controlled way.

Abstract: There is provided a honeycomb structure including a honeycomb base material including a porous partition wall parent material; plugged portions; and a porous collecting layer disposed on the surface of the partition wall parent material in the remaining cells. A melting point of a material constituting the collecting layer is higher than that of a material constituting the partition wall parent material, a pore surface area per unit volume of the collecting layer is 2.0 times or more a pore surface area per unit volume of the partition wall parent material, and a thickness of a portion of the collecting layer which penetrates into pores of the partition wall parent material is 6% or smaller of that of each of partition walls including the partition wall parent material and the collecting layer.

Abstract: A golf hole painter is provided for painting an area of a golf hole above a top of a golf cup, but below the putting surface. The golf hole painter includes a base member, a liner, and a main body. The main body is rotatably attached to the base member. The main body also receives a spray canister containing paint, which is pressed and rotated along with the main body in relation to the base member to spray the entire interior periphery of a golf hole. The painted portion of the golf hole allows a golfer to more easily view a golf hole while putting on a golf green, due to the rules of golf requiring a golf cup to sit at least one inch below the putting surface.

Abstract: Specimen containers incorporating a sensor are provided with features for decreasing the volume of polymer matrix material required for the sensor. Such volume-reducing features can take the form of scallop-like indentations projecting inwards towards the interior of the container formed in the transition between the side wall of the container and the base of the container. Alternatively, the base of the container includes a raised rim extending upwards into the interior of the body inward of and spaced from the side wall. The rim defines a chamber for the sensor. Methods of manufacturing specimen containers with cured liquid phase sensor matrix materials are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of fabricating a metamaterial is provided, comprising providing a sample of engineered microstructured material that is transparent to electromagnetic radiation and comprises one or more voids, passing through the voids a high pressure fluid comprising a functional material carried in a carrier fluid, and causing the functional material to deposit or otherwise integrate into the engineered microstructured material to form the metamaterial. Many microstructured materials and functional materials can be used, together with various techniques for controlling the location of the integration of the functional material within the microstructured material, so that a wide range of different metamaterials can be produced.
