Patent number: 4333215Abstract: A process for making a multilayer bearing material is provided which comprises a backing layer, an intermediate layer of aluminum and an outer overlay layer. The backing layer and aluminum layer are roll bonded together to form a composite strip which is then fed into a molten bath of overlay material which provides for good adhesion to the aluminum and also for good bearing material properties. Patent number: 4298635Abstract: According to the present invention the microporous surface of a corrodible metal body is protected against corrosive agents of the atmosphere and even such severely corrosive agents as those found in marine environments, by an impregnation in the pores of an inner protective material, preferably oil, that is substantially impervious to corrosive agents, and a covering of outer protective material, preferably resin, that is intimately bonded to the outer surface of the metal and bridges over the impregnated pores. After the impregnation, any of the inner protective material such as oil that may remain on the outer surface of the metal is selectively removed, while the inner protective material in the pores is selectively retained, whereby a secure, intimate bond of the covering to the metal is assured to protect the metal from corrosion initiating from the outside, while the inner protective material remains operatively disposed in the pores to protect the covering from corrosive undermining.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1979Date of Patent: November 3, 1981Inventor: Roger Lovell

Patent number: 4259365Abstract: Sodium nitrite in liquid form is deposited on a substrate and allowed to crystallize thereby forming a thin layer on the substrate. The substrate is either dipped into a solution containing sodium nitrite or into sodium nitrite in the molten state and then pulled out again. Patent number: 4142006Abstract: Method of making a high power laser mirror. Essentially the mirror consists of a refractory composition substrate which is polished to an optical finish and overcoated with a high reflectivity metal and a dielectric film disposed to cover the high reflectivity metal. The method includes the hot pressing of the refractory composition, especially silicon carbide, to form a substrate following which an optical finish is polished on one surface thereof. Thereafter, a metal film with a high reflectivity is applied to cover the optical surface and then a dielectric film is deposited over the high reflectivity metal film. Both films are deposited employing process of vacuum evaporation for deposition on the substrate. As thus combined, the mirror exhibits low optical absorptivity, high thermal conductivity, low weight, and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Since the substrate is formed of a hard refractory composition, an excellent optical finish can be polished on the surface thereof.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1976Date of Patent: February 27, 1979Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Wolfgang J. Patent number: 4032672Abstract: A method for coating the faces of parts having faces and backs, includes assembling the parts so that the faces and backs thereof define two opposed coating surfaces. The parts may be staggered, and alternate parts have their faces disposed in opposite directions, with faces recessed with respect to the backs of the adjacent parts. Both coating surfaces therefore comprise a plurality of recessed part faces interspersed with part backs.A hardenable coating such as a molten hard facing material is applied to both of the coating surfaces and allowed to harden. After hardening, the surfaces are ground to reduce the thickness of the hardened coating sufficiently to expose the part backs, leaving a desired residual layer of coating adhered to the recessed part faces. The parts are then disassembled to provide a plurality of separate parts, each having a coating on the face thereof.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1975Date of Patent: June 28, 1977Assignee: Ramsey CorporationInventor: Harold E. Patent number: 4024302Abstract: In a method for continuously coating with a coating solution a plurality of running webs having discontinuous areas in the surface thereof, the improvement which comprises coarsening at least the surface of the web coated in the area of the web immediately following the discontinuous area of the web prior to the coating. The discontinuous areas in the surface can arise from the tape used to connect one web to another web or from projection in the surface of the web.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1974Date of Patent: May 17, 1977Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventors: Akira Takagi, Sei Kawahara, Hideo Takeda

Patent number: 4022929Abstract: The invention relates to a method of aluminizing the inside of the panel of a television picture tube. When aluminizing the inside of the panel, blisters caused by the vaporizing lacquer, are likely to develop in the layer of aluminum, especially on the side walls of the panel portion. When taking care in accordance with the invention, that the coat of lacquer is roughened prior to the performance of the aluminizing process, these blisters are avoided.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1975Date of Patent: May 10, 1977Assignee: International Standard Electric CorporationInventors: Eberhard Nill, Peter Schmidt

Patent number: 4016311Abstract: A protected easy-open metal end for containers is disclosed that contains a scoreline which defines on the central portion of the end a removable panel portion and a residual lip portion. A layer of synthetic resin hot melt material is deposited on one of the central panel surfaces opposite the scoreline, whereupon after the hot melt is solidified, the end is post heated to effect softening of the hot melt so that the metal end surface is wetted thereby. The resultant bond between the hot melt and the metal end is so great that severing of the removable panel from the end effects corresponding severing of the hot melt layer to provide protective hot melt layers on the edges of each of the panel and the residual lip portions. The hot melt layer may be applied to the same or the opposite central panel surface that contains the scoreline, or on both surfaces to provide two-side protection.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1974Date of Patent: April 5, 1977Assignee: Boise Cascade CorporationInventors: Donald H. Patent number: 3976815Abstract: An apparatus and method for continuously cleaning and coating wire is disclosed in which rod having scale and other inpurities on its outer surface is first mechanically descaled by passage through a plurality of spatially positioned rollers, then cleaned by frictional scraping by at least two rotating and orbiting abrasive drums which scrape the entire outer surface of the rod. The cleaned rod is then covered by a coating solution and electrically heated to a temperature sufficient to bake a coating on the exterior surface of the rod. The rod is then passed to a drawing apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1975Date of Patent: August 24, 1976Assignee: M & B Metal Products CompanyInventor: Oliver R. Brekle

Patent number: 3959030Abstract: There is disclosed a method for producing aluminum coated steel comprising cleaning the surface of a steel substrate by grid- or shot-blasting or by pickling followed by rinsing with water and thermal spraying with aluminum thereon in a thickness ranging from 30 to 300 microns while heating said surface sufficiently to maintain it at a temperature ranging from about 100.degree. to 500.degree.C.The aluminum coated steel may be thereafter be treated by heating it at a temperature ranging from 150.degree. to 600.degree.C for 3 minutes to 24 hours after it has been cold-rolled to a reduction of area from 5 to 80% or after it has been hot-rolled at a temperature ranging from 150.degree. to 600.degree.C.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1974Date of Patent: May 25, 1976Assignee: Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd.Inventors: Jiro Satake, Saburo Nagata, Katsuyasu Kawasaki
